the league would have to sponsor ETSU for its application to be voted on The league's top official indicate that there might be any problems on that point constitution calls for a maximum of 12 said Germann "So there would certainly be room for East -Tennessee next seasomno matter There have been a number of recent newspaper reports in North Carolina that Davidson was going to drop from the SC should the new regulations be passed by -the NCAA Germann made no comment on that subject A high-ranking Appalachian State athletic official told the Times-News this week that his university stood ready to back" admission should the application become a reality Two more schools would be needed to bring the application before a vote of the board East Tennessee plays several SC schools regularly including Appalachian State Furman and Western Carolina The local school is also expected to add either Richmond or UT-Chat-tanooga to next football slate That would give State four SC opponents on next year's schedule Any application for admission to the Southern Conference would require a two-thirds vote of all schools present to change the bylaws If all eight schools voted six would have to be in favor of the change Sources close to DeRosier indicate that ETSU will wait until after the OVC and NCAA meetings to make a move State is expected to put pressure on the league for a reform of the conference restrictions ETSU hosted the last OVC meeting in the spring but at that time the other universities were unprepared to any of thecurrent restrictions Officials both at ETSU and other OVC schools admit that may mean one less team in the Ohio Valley East Tennessee joined the league in 1957 and the OVC has only seen one change since then Austin admittance in 1962 Southern Conference is where our -recruiting area really said one ETSU athletic official would certainly be a boom to our entire If East Tennessee joins the Southern Conference the number of football scholarships would increase from 55 to 95 while four additional basketball grants would be available That has been mentioned at the university as the top reason for making the change DeRosier shortly after taking office said East Tennessee would be a major university within five years This could possibly be one of the bigger steps in that direction Kenmef 1 08 10 3 79 79 Kencott 60b 511 20 20 KeMcG 125 9 489 47 46 Times-News by Collier over the objections of Poske Collier had objected to company statements that the negotiations were buttoned His reaction prompted the negotiator to say that Collier is not the official spokesman for the union which is an affiliate of the AFL-CIO The glass plant had been hit by a strike in the late 1950s That job action had resulted in several incidents of violence workers Dr Hogan said In the final arguments Mclnturff painted a picture of a man did not like women very much when he was Rhea had received a general discharge from the service for one sex crime said Mclnturff And (Mrs Rhea) had every reason to believe he would do so again not with his daughter but with Mrs Rhea had a daughter by a previous marriage Prosecuting attorney Jerry Beck meanwhiler'criticized Mrs-Rhea-as- a-woman who sobbed and cried on the stand without a showing on her Beck argued the number of bullets fired at the victim had to have come from someone who knew what they were doing He also said Mrs Rhea had to have fired the gun from more than six feet away from her husband since no powder burns could be found on his shirt is the one who had nowhere to said Beck Before the jury was called back into the court deliver the verdict Judge Edgar uaihoun admonished those present against a disrupting response to the decision So overwhelmed was Mrs Rhea however she almost received a 10-day term in jail for contempt of court after the verdict was announced Judge Calhoun also warned that threatening a witness was a felony and that if such an incident should occur Sullivan Uounty Deputies would be Bn hand to make an arrest Judge Calhoun's warning came after a shouting match between a defense witness and persons identified as members of family broke out in front of the courthouse Thursday and father when sober When he was drinking however he became a totally different person they said Mrs Rhea testified-that her husband would become violent after he had drunk just a few beers and had often beaten her and the children On the night of the murder Mrs Rhea said her husband drug her into the bathroom threw the blanket she was carrying down on the floor and then shoved her down and forced her to perform oral sex which caused her to throw up Then according to Mrs testimony her husband pulled out a gun from the medicine cabinet and threatened her life A struggle followed and Mrs Rhea ended up with the gun At this time Mrs Rhea said she went blank When she awoke she was on her knees in the doorway to the bathroom with the empty gun in her hands Eight empty casings were found on the bathroom floor Five of the bulletts had struck her husband one striking the main aorta of the heart Lengthy testimony was also heard yesterday from Dr Marshall Hogan a prominent local psychiatrist Dr Hogan was called by the defense to explain how Mrs Rhea could black out the shooting incident without suffering a mental illness is my understanding that one can act under such a state of stress and not know what they are he said a natural reaction response to an extremely stressful When defense attorney BC Mclnturff asked: Would she know what was going on James
