NEWS--NEWPORT, B. FRIDAY, JANUARY IB, THIRTEEN Grantland Rice The Rabbit Belongs BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. It's a little late for him "now but I'll back Bill Corum's idea that Rabbit Maranville belongs in baseball's Hall of Fame. I met him before and I'd seen him play previously, but I got to know him best in the spring-training camp of 1914. He was playing with the Braves and you may remember that was the year the Braves walloped the Athletics four times in a row in the world series.

The Rabbit's second-base mate that season was Johnny Evers, the smallest double-play combination in baseball. The two didn't average 145 pounds in weight, but I'd like "to bet there was more heart at' short and second that season than baseball has ever known at those two infield spots. Rabbit finished his actual ballplaying career with a broken leg, trying desperately to score in an exhibition game. All games were finish fights to Maranville. So, too, were they with Evers, who matched The Rabbit, break for break.

He stole second one day and slid the bag. He broke his leg so badly the bone stuck out several inches. The catcher's throw went on to center field so Evers got up and ran to third on the badly cracked limb. That's how much heart Maranville and Evers had. I recall that spring, now just 40 years ago, that Maranvills and Evers started a new club.

The purpose cf the club was not to let the enemy know anyone had been hurt on a play. If you got hit, no rubbing the wounded spot. You had to show disdain of any injury. I remember on one occasion MaranviJle was covering second on a play. He stumbled near the bag and got hit in the mouth with a -hard thrown ball.

The impact knocked out three teeth. Maranville never made a sign that he had been hit. He never even looked for his teeth. Evers is in the Hall of Fame. Tinker is in the Hall of Fame.

I hope The Rabbit is on his a to the same place. You a lease that much heart out and call it a. Hall of Fame. The Rabbit had an exhaustlt'os supply of energy. He must have been a hustler from birlh.

Sore arm or Charley horse or what not, no illness or injury could drive The Rabbit out of action. It was a wonderful thing to see Maranville and Evers playing side by side especially in a series that had Stuffy Mclnnis. Eddie Collins, Jack Barry and Frank Baker playing on the other i i Chief Bender, Eddie Plank and a great pitching a facing Dick Rudolph, George Tyler and Bill James. There was a lot of class to that old Brave team. They got up off the floor from last place in mid-July to win the Pennant- They met and beat a ball club that had won four flags in five years--that is still ranked as one of the three greatest of all time, and won without a defeat.

GI Saddler Ends 22-Month Ring Layoff Tonight NEW YORK (It--Sandy Saddler, home on leave from the Army, goes back to work after a 22- month ring layoff in a nontitle match with little Billy Bossio tonight at St. Nicholas Arena. Although tonight's 10-rounder is regarded as more or less of a warmup for the featherweight champ, a favorite, he soon must get down to serious boxing. He is expected to be discharged from the Army by April at the latest. In fact, he probably won't go back to Germany, where he has been stationed.

He may be reassigned to a camp in the States until it's time to get out. The match, at 130 pounds, give or take a pound, will start at 10 p.m., EST, and will be carried on network TV (NBC) and radio (ABCJ. Because an Ice show is playing in Madison Square C-arden, the Friday fights move temporarily to St. Nick's. Bossio, of course, could upset Saddler.

He did beat Gene Smith, a top-heavy favorite, in Washington last September and earned a draw in a rematch. However, Billy is a little fellow, 5 feet 1, against the rangy 5-foot-8 Saddler and does not pack the knockout wallop of the champ, who has stopped 90 opponents while winning 129 of 143 pro starts.
