May 15, 1809. MEANS Of preventing and removing Epileptic Fits; THE following method of preventing and removing epileptic fits, is taken from a magazine publifhed near fifty years ago the curiofity of it, may lead fame perfons to make trial.of it, and there is little doubt, that eftperience will find it ufeful and beneficial. Any perfod fubjed to the epilepfy, may prevent a fit of it from coming on, if pofrefs. ed of the kali previous notice, before he be eutirely deprived of his fenfes, by the follow. ing fimple experiment.

Let him have always ready in his pocket, a piece of metal, as broad as he is able to contain between his teeth when his jaws are ftrerched to the ut. moft as foon as he feels the firlf fymptom of the fit, let him take this piece of metal immediately and open his teeth as wide as palate, and put it between them, fo that his jaws may thereby be kept at their utmo(t Itretch for fome time this in about half a minute will rellore him entirely to his fenfes, and prevent the fit from coining on at that time. If the fit thould come on before the piece of metal can be obtained, 'he fame experiment will remove it in a very 'bort time for if the inftrument, when procured, be placed between the patient's teeth, till his jaws are at the utnioll ftretch, the fit will immediately- go off, and the patient very fowl recover. Some years ago at Amfterdam, a number of gentlemen being in company together, one of them was feized with a fit of epilepfy the other gentlemen prefent could not help being concerned at the accident but an old officer of the army, who afro made one of the company, without any concern, took a piece of metal from his pocket and went to the perfon in the epilepfy, placed it between his teeth, and forced them open with it where. upon the perfun forthwith recovered.

After being feated, the inquiry was, how the officer could fo quickly recover the gentleman in the epileply. He told them that he was often obliged to go out at the head of a party, when the enemy happened to be but a fmall diltaffce from their camp and that feveral of their men being liable to the epilepfy, if any of them happened to be feized with it when they eted as a party they were obliged to leave them behind, where they often fell into the enemy's hands before they recovered that on this account be had long been in fearch of fomething which might afford inftant recovery, and that he had at IA Latin upon this method of forcing open the jaws with a piece of metal, which he had often tried fince, had never known it to fail. As it is undoubtedly the forcing open of the jaws, and not any virtue in the metal it-elf, which produces this eflat, there can be no difference as to the kind of metal A crown piece might anfwer but if made of iron or Reel for the purpole, it would he more convenient if made of a fquare or oblong form, of about the thicknels of a crown, aral of loch a breadth as to be exattly equal to the wideft opening of the jaws. It may be proper ago to oblerve, that one of the edges ought to be thin, that it may the more eality enter between the teeth, when they are to )e forced open by fome other perlon for the fame reafon it may be convenient to put a handle to it, like the handle of a key. 1 here is great reafon to believe that this experiment will not only remove the fit of the epilepfy for that time, but alfo until the next time of its ordinary periodical return, without any apparent difference from what would have happened if the fit had been allowed to work itfelf off it is prefumable, that there are fcarce any but who have as long warning of the approach of the fit as might be fufficient for taking a piece of metal out of their pockets, and putting it be.

tween their teeth. PRILANTRROPOS The Misfortune of being Ugly. A GIRL was on the point of being hanged at Vienna. Her youth and beauty made a great impreflion upon the heart of one of the fpeaators who was a Neapolitan, a middle aged man, but excefftvely ugly. As he had but a few minutes to make up his mind, be ran immediately to the place of execution, and, declaring his intention to marry the criminal, demanded her pardon.

According to the cuitom of the country, the pardon was granted, on condition that the girl was not averle to the match. He accordingly ad. dreffed her in thefe terms, Madam, I am a gentleman of fome property, and now I with; for the firft time, that I were a king, only that I might afford you a ftronger proof of 'try Alas, fir," replied the girl," I am thoroughly fenfible of your affeetion and generofity but I am not miltrefs over my own heart, and I cannot be. lie my own fentiments. Unfortunately they control my fate, and I prefer the death with which am threatened, to Marrying fo ugly a fellow as you are." The Neapolitan retired in confufion, and the woman diretted the executioner to do his office.
