not the Central Cougars? Actually Central never has been last in anything but the Cougars football potency is increasing rapidly Today the Cougars find themselves atop the Big Nine Conference standings alone On Prep Sports ullins Keys Wave 44-0 By BOB FOLEY Times-News Sports Writer boy on this team knows how we got where we are by hard work desire and dedication No we re not about to get overconfident" Friday night's 33-0 blasting of Sullivan East helped McFerrins team reach some milestones It was win No 8 for the unbeaten Cougars who happen to be ranked eighth in the state poll Thats the most wins for a Central grid team in one season and of course the schools longest win streak since it began the sport back in 1968 Also Central tied the school record for number of shutouts in one year four The Cougars have blanked Sullivan West Tennessee High Daniel Boone and Sullivan East They're leading the Big Nine in fewest points yielded 27 just got whipped And today I think I saw the best defensive back ever to play in the IPD in Mullins He made some great plays and covered everything deep so couldn't throw NORTON DR Mullins finally came up with some snakebite antidote here Saturday afternoon leading Clintwood to another easy victory in its relentless pursuit of a third consecutive Lonesome Pine District football championship Mullins had been snakebitten throughout the eight-game old season with eight touchdowns on pass interceptions fumble recoveries rushes and punt returns called back due to various infractions Not only did Mullins key a Wave defense which limited Norton to just 98 yards and seven first downs he took team rushing honors for the day with 69 yards in 10 carries Johnny McFall second in the league rushing department suffered a shoulder bruise and played about half the game gaining 67 in 10 while quarterback A Blevins and fullback Gary Cox had 10-48 and 1 1-47 respectively Even though the Cougars crushed East with relative ease and are playing at a peak Greeneville perhaps won't be the pushover one might have expected by looking at the records a few weeks ago The Greene Devils have lost seven straight games since gunning down Knox Farragut on opening night But don't let that 1-7 record deceive you Greeneville has put the pads to the opposition the last three games Despite good showings the Devils have dropped back-to-back decisions to Morristown East (14-7) Dobyns-Bennett (13-0) and Johnson City (14-12) McFernn a native Tennessean who came to Central via Atlanta Ga is certainly elated over the Cougars success but says the last thing he expects is for them to get overconfident against any team They (the team) have far surpassed our expectations he said Saturday as the Central coaching staff started preparations for Greeneville's invasion next Thursday night Were not that good Every But yesterday he shook the proverbial monkey off his back making three big pass interceptions in the Waves 44-0 crushing of Norton Norton's game plan was to run wide and have Jake Neeley throw on the run But the massive Wave front harrassed the nimble magic-worker throughout and a great deal of credit for Mullins' thefts went to their hard-charge tactics We realize weve got to beat Greeneville" said McFernn It's a big game for us Inside A win this week automatically gives Central a share of the Big Nine championship something no Central team in any sport has landed A win the following week over D-B would hand it to the Cougars outright We just played this game with a businesslike approach said Clintwood head coach Ralph Cummins whos gunning for a second straight Group A state title The boys knew what they had to do and went out and did it Danny Brickeys 37-yard field goal with three seconds to go gave Powell Valley a 9-7 victory over Pennington Saturday night See story Page 3C Experience won the World Series for the Cincinnati Reds See commentary and Series facts and figures Page 5C Also Inside: "I expected it to be a closer game and didnt expect to hold them scoreless because Norton's so explosive In our drills this week we worked on the wide stuff making their halfbacks stay home on pass plays getting our ends to contain getting our cornerbacks to think wide stuff Nine Cougar players including star runner Randy Kitz-miller missed practice last Wednesday the team's final full-scale workout during the week because of a virus Kitzmiller did not play Friday Greg Darnell the other Central starter at running back played only sparingly because hed been ill McFernn used Chris Hickman and Eddie Crawford both of horn are defensive standouts on offense as running backs Each performed well and it convinced McFernn that hes got depth if needed at fullback and halfback His 30-yard interception return for a touchdown broke open a 164) game early in the third quarter after his leaping end zone theft had squelched the Raiders only scoring threat of the day just seconds before halftime The game realized the worst expectations of Raider coach A1 Stecker who had said he thought the current Wave edition was the greatest team ever assembled in the LPD The big emphasis was on trying to contain Jake which we did well I wouldnt say it's our best game this season but we certainly played a good football game and 1 cant think of anything I'm dissatisified with College results Pages 2C-3C D-B wins Region I C-C was at his finest Central rolled up 344 yards total offense a big part of it with Holt at the controls on the outside option "Hes what makes us go" said McFernn In view of D-Bs calamitous experience at Elizabethton Friday Central now has to be considered the frontrunner Clintwood scored after taking the opening kickoff Norton apparently ready mentally stopped the Wave for a yard loss on their first two plays But Blev ins fired 35 yards deep to Jeff Wright who took it away from Allen Richardson at the Norton 30 and eight plays later McFall went over from the three "I believe it more now" he said 1 thought we did a pretty good job on them defensively in the first half but they just whipped us I thought playing in the hot weather might be to our advantage because we were faster and they were bigger but it didn't turn out that way "I really thought we had a pretty good defensive scheme keying on the dives and making them eo outside but we More On Page 3C Col 7 Moje On Page 3C Col 7
