BILL LANE Times-News Sports Editor KNOXVILLE Ray Mears unveiled his 1975-76 Tennessee Vols to a crowd of 12944 at Stokely Center Saturday night on a winning note but the man been tabbed as coach of the team to beat in the Southeastern Conference basketball race had mixed emotions about the Big Orange performance The Vols pelted Biscayne College 81-63 with a remarkable first half almost destroying the Floridians But after halftime the Vols eased up and the Bobcats outplayed them in the final 20-minute segment to some degree Ernie Grunfeld who hit 14 of the last 15 points to push back a Biscayne rally took over leadertship of the team from Mike Jackson at halftime Grunfeld finished with 28 points Jackson riddled the Bobcats early with some shooting marksmanship from the corners enabling Tennessee to throttle to a 46-25 halfti me lead As a result of firing the Vols hit 56 8 per cent of their field goal attempts in the opening 20 minutes It was Jackson right behind Grunfeld in the Tennessee scoring column with 23 points Bernard King who pulled down 23 rebounds as the Vols outdid Biscayne 51-43 on the boards added 16 points before fouling out late in the game Mears started two freshmen pointman Johnny Darden and 6-9 Irv Chatman but neither inked up the scorebook very much Darden did generate a bit of excitement with his uncanny playmaking in the half then slacked Off after intermission and played about like any other freshman would The Vols limited Biscayne All-American Artie Collins to just four points in the first half yet he wound up with 17 (Collins) is a super said Mears who acknowledged that the 6-5 guard who averaged 24 points a game last year definitely could make it in the SEC hit 35 against North Carolina and 36 against Houston how good he More Sadler circled left end for the final yard and a 7-0 lead Key play in the march was a 50-yard pass from Fisher throwing on the run to 220-pound freshman Mike Gothard moving Vandy to the Tennessee two-yard line Two plunges at the Vol line failed then Fisher gave to Sadler for the TD Vandy broke the unwritten law of football near the end of the half and put a touchdown on the platter for the Vols who had been seemingly listless up to that time In a situation where they could have taken a 7-0 lead to the dressing room the Commodores went to the airways apparently searching for field goal position Fisher threw to Barry Burton for 14 yards Again Fisher cocked to pass Defensive end Ron McCartney rushed in and practically took the ball from the Vandy hands at the Commodore 38 Before Vandy could pull McCartney down he had returned the ball to the Vandy 13 Morgan picked up 11 yards on a right-side pitch then lost one yard Wallace faked inside on a play-action pass hitting West standing all alone in the corner of the end zone for a three-yard TD The 7-7 tie stood at the half Tennessee missed a chance to forge ahead when Dennis Harrison deflected Jim 30-yard field goal attempt with 7:31 remaining in the third quarter Tennessee however did go ahead by a 14-7 margin driving 67 yards with 10 plays More on Page 2C Col 6 KNOXVILLE (UPI) Statistics of the Vanderbilt Tennes see BILL LANE Times-News Sports Editor KNOXVILLE They can put a fresh batch of whiskey in the barrel The Vanderbilt Commodores emptied one here Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium It had been in the aging process for 11 long years Just like the magazine advertisement says the last time Vanderbilt beat a Tennessee football team was by a 7-0 margin way back in 1964 in Nashville And that certain brand of whiskey had been on wood ever since Placekicker Mark Adams who provided the winning margin for four Vanderbilt wins during the season booted an 18-yard field goal from an angle with 8:41 remaining in the game and the Commodores held on in the final minute? for only their third victory over Tennessee in Knoxville over a 38-year span This was the first time Vandy had beaten the Vols here since the 1959 team did it 14-0 Vandy stroked to a quick 7-0 lead Tennessee got geared up and took it away with two touchdowns and was on top 14-7 until former Nashville Overton sensation Adolph Groves got the tying touchdown on a nine-yard dart around left end with 10:39 left in the game Ed Oaks making his second interception of the day set up the winning field goal by picking off a Randy Wallace throw and returning it 26 yards to the Six-yard line with 9:57 to go Defender Craig Puki stopped Oaks from going all the way Three unsuccessful cracks by hard-running Lonnie Sadler at the Vol line persuaded new head coach Fred Pancoast to have Adams to for a field goal hit Tommy West with my left shoulder and then tipped the ball in the air with my right hand while he was going down If I flattened him I never could have caught the ball I got great blocking after that and thought I was in the end zone I was depressed at halftime after they got their touchdown but our coaches did a good BOB FOLEY Times-News Sports Writer CLINTWOOD One swift kick from the strong leg of multi-talented Johnny McFall was about the only difference here Saturday afternoon between two defensive-minded Group A prep football teams as the coveted state championship stayed in this gridiron-mad stronghold McFall Virginia state point champion with 309 to wrap up his illustrious career delivered his game-winner with only 7:23 left on the clock as Clintwood successfully defended its title with a harder-than-expected 10-7 victory over Bowling Green But for a fumble just moments before McFall booted true the two goliaths might still be going at it as about 6000 fans were treated to defensive football at its best The pre-game propaganda promised a wide-open offensive attack between two of the premier elevens But four lost Green Wave fumbles and two BG turnovers kept most of the action inside the twenty yard lines said Wave coach Ralph Cummins seconds after stepping out of a $10400 Cadillac presented him by the Elkins-Kendrick Enterprises amidst the post-game celebrating Green was tough Maybe we underestimated them a bit we tried not to But what can I say?
