of the Volunteer Natural Gas Company Tuesday Miller said According to Miller propane is the only alternative fuel to which the Kingsport Press can readily switch Were using oil to fire boilers but the printing press dryers couldnt use the Number Six fuel oil used to fire the boilers Miller said Another Hawkins County industry Holliston Mills will have to close after Jan 1 if gas is not available according to platn manger Dr Prucino According to Prucino natural gas is essential to the operation of the Holliston Mills plant We have been told there will be no gas available after the first of the year Unless our supplier the Hawkins County Natural Gas Utility District can provide propane as a substitute fuel we will have to suspend operations in January February and March Prucino said Other Hawkins County industries Miller said will be affected by the gas cutbacks Holliston Mills The International Playing Card and Label Plant the Aladdin Plastic Plant and the TRW Plant are all users of natural gas and will all be affected to some extent by the 100 per cent reduction of natural gas supplies ill January Miller said In Kingsport a Tennessee Eastman Company spokesman said his companys supply of natural gas had been cut more than 50 per cent effective Monday Eastman spokesmen said current production levels could be temporarily maintained through the use of alternative fuels however A major consumer of natural gas Eastman uses gas as a feedstock in manufacture of some chemical products as a heat source in other chemical operations and to stabilize combustion in coal-fired steam Natural gas supply cutbacks announced Monday'by the East Tennessee Natural Gas Company may result in the closing of the Hawkins County division of the Kingsport Press and threaten other Kingsport industries company spokesmen said Monday Walter Miller manager of engineering at Kingsport Press said the Natural Gas Utility District of Hawkins County had informed him natural gas supplies would be reduced 100 per cent Jan 1 Unless we can get propane to use as alternate fuel for the dryers on our printing presses we will have to suspend operations at our HawkinsCounty plant Miller said He added that the utility district had some propane on hand but that it would be in demand by several other Hawkins County industries as well It would take about 10000 gallons of propane per day to operate all serious obstacles are in sight Congress has in the past become snarled in unexpected stalemates that kept the Senate and House in session as late as New Years Eve A major roadblock fell Monday when the House in a surprise move dropped demands fora strong antibusing legislation 224-136 The move sends an $86 billion supplemental appropriations bill to the White House without the antibusing measure The major bills Congress still wants to pass are a measure to improve terms for trading with the Soviet Union if the Russians permit free emigration of Jews a package to create jobs and add benefits Scott Sullivan and Hawkins Counties Twenty families have been adopted by various organizations churches and individuals These families will receive gifts of food clothing and toys from the adopting appears almost certain of passing Congress this week Motorists also should expect state police to be more rigid about the 55-mile-an-hour speed limit next year as a result of the same legislation a $763 million federal aid highway bill which would cut off funds to any state that does not enforce it The House passed the bill Monday It now goes to a conference to iron out differences with the it the German mark and the British pound The price of gold neared the $190 an ounce record mark it first hit a mouth ago There has been massive unloading of dollars and other currencies and equally massive buying of Swiss francs" one Swiss banker said in explanation In midafternoon on the Zurich exchange market the dollar fell to 25330 Swiss francs This was almost half the price it fetched a mere three years ago when the dollar was worth 433 francs The German mark also fell to a record low of 10495 Swiss francs and the British pound hit a new bottom of 592 francs The dollar is dragging every other major currency down because everyone wants to sell it to buy Swiss francs a dealer said At first today we thought it was simply bad economic news from the United States that was the reason but now we can see that everyone wants to have Swiss francs The German mark fell in Switzerland bankers said not because of any particular reason but simply because the dollar dropped so low Bankers said the collapse of the dollar was not connected to a renewed rise in the price of gold Gold has gone up mainly because of the announcement of a gold auction in the United States in January" he said James Quillens attack on sugar prices for the rapid decline in cost According to Frank Countiss president of Franks Food Co his cost of sugar has come down by $15 per 100 lb bag since Quillen accused sugar producers of pirating and cheating the American consumer Quillen called for a full scale investigation of skyrocketing prices and outrageous profit levels of domestic sugar producers in a speech on the floor of the House two weeks ago He asked for a Department of Justice investigation under federal anti-trust laws Countiss said he was paying more than $70 per 100 lb bag of sugar at that time The price dropped almost immediately after the congressmans announcement and its come down twice again since then Countiss said the price drop has been reflected all down the line from grower to market He gets his wholesale sugar from Amstar in Savannah the largest refinery in the world he said i 1 staff has won more press association awards than any other paper in Tennessee large or small It
