2C Kingsport Times-News Sunday September 19 1976 Pitt Rolls Past Georgia Tech 42-14 I i The Bear defense then stopped Auburn twice in their own territory in final minutes once forcing a punt and the second time a fourth down try by the Tigers to clinch Baylors first victory after an opening loss Auburn is now 0-2 season Cavanaugh threw touchdown passes of 50 and six yards to Gordon Jones and scored himself on a four-yard run on a keeper early in the third period Georgia Tech had trouble moving the ball against the Panthers most of the game but drove 85 yards to a touchdown late in the second period the tally coming on a one-yard sneak by freshman quarterback Mike Jolly im Cr ATLANTA (UPI) Tony Dorsett continued his early bid for a Heisman Trophy Saturday night by npping off 113 yards and three touchdowns while pacing high-ranked Pittsburgh to a 42-14 victory over Georgia Tech Dorsett who rambled for 181 yards against Notre Dame last week and now has a career total of 4428 yards in his drive toward the all-time NCAA career rushing record scored on a six-yard run in the first penod a five-yard run in the second and a 10-yard run in the fourth as the Panthers ranked No 4 completely outclassed the Yellow Jackets Dorsett had plenty of help from Matt Cavanaugh who took over at quarterback early in the second period when starter Bob Haygood suffered a torn ligament in his left knee which may sideline him for the remainder of the ATLANTA (UPI) Statistics ot the Pittsburgh Georgio Tech footboil game Baylor Auburn AUBURN Ala (UPI) Quarterback Mark Jackson engineered a fourth quarter touchdown drive and then completed a two-point conversion pass to split end Tommy Davidson to give Baylor a 15-14 victory over Auburn in a sloppily-played intersectional battle Saturday Jackson passed for 60 of the 62 yards in the final drive hitting Davidson deep in the end zone with a 12-yard strike for the score with 4:43 left to play He then rolled to the right on the conversion and hit Davidson just over the goal line for the winning points Florida Houston GAINESVILLE Fla (UPI) Quarterback Jimmy Fisher ran for two touchdowns and passed for a third to lead a potent Florida attack which rolled up 615 yards total offense in walloping Houston 49-14 Saturday night Fisher connected on a 35-yard scoring pass to split end Wes Chandler and ran for 31 and eight-yard touchdowns Hill (NC) in a non- conference football game Saturday The Govs although lighter than the North Carolina team held Mars Tennessee Tech Youngstown YOUNGSTOWN Ohio (UPI) Tennessee Tech spotted Youngstown State a 10-0 lead then roared back for two touchdowns one set up on a pass interference penalty for a 13-10 win Saturday The winning touchdown was set up in the fourth 13 10 quarter on a pass interference call in the Youngstown end zone on a pass from quarterback Gary Perdue to Cornize Hoke Perdue ran over from the one on the next play The loss left Youngstown winless in two games South Carolina Duke COLUMBIA SC (UPI) Freshman quarterback Steve Swinehart came off the bench in the second half Saturday night and scored one touchdown and passed for another to lead South Carolina to a 24-6 victory over Duke The win was the third of the season for the undefeated Gamecocks but it took the heroics of Swinehart to assure the victory Leading only 10-6 at halftime with starting quarterback Ron Bass out with injuries the Gamecocks scored midway through the third quarter on a one-yard plunge by the Swinehart The Lancaster Ohio native set up his first touchdown with a 58-yard dash On the first play of the Georgia Clemson CLEMSONSC (UPI) Matt Robinson tossed three touchdown passes and Ray Goff who alternated with him at quarterback had a 73-yard touchdown run Saturday as 9thranked Gerogia embarrassed Clemson 41-0 in a regionally televised game Robinson a senior had scoring passes of nine 36 and 85 yards as Georgia pushed its record to 2-0 Bulldog Coach Vince Dooley schools Previously they served as three grades (7th 8th and 9th) and fed into Dobyns-Bennett High School The ninth grades been moved into the regular phase of the high school The middle schools consist of seventh and eighth grades Sevier opens its season at home against Blountville in a 5 pm game Robinsons on the road facing Jonesboro Middle School in a 7 pm game at Boones Creek Sevier is coached this year by John Rippetoe and the assistant is Rick Everroad For Robinson their opener will be the first of a five-game schedule Their home opener will be Sept 28 against Bluff City at 5 pm
