holding seven hostages while asking his male lover to escape with him to Algeria John Wojtowicz 27 told Judge Anthony Travia he only planned the holdup to get money for a sex change operation for Ernest Aron but the judge ruled Wojtowicz had nonetheless committed a very serious crime Ernie was a woman trapped in a mans body said Wojtowicz I tried everything I could to get the money for the operation legally but no one would hire me because I am gay It was then that I decided to rob the bank According to Wojtowiczs attorney Mark Landsman the convicted bandit has sold the film rights to his holdup story for $7500 Of that he gave $2500 to Aron for a sex change operation Aron is now known as Liz Eden Debbie Wojtowicz In pronouncing sentence Travia said There was a robbery of a bank robbers Wojtowicz and Matterson demanded a plane to fly them from Kennedy Airport to Algeria Wojtowicz at first wanted Aron brought along but Aron apparently refused to go At one point during the 15-hour ordeal Wojtowicz told newsmen: The Supreme Court will let me get away with this Theres no death penalty Its ridiculous I can shoot everyone here then throw my gun down and walk out and they cant put me in the electric chair On the verge of tears Monday Wojtowicz said had wanted to surrender at the bank but that Matterson threatened to kill all the hostages if he did Ju ng is for show biz
