i the arts editorials business Sunday September 28 1975 Seivers Paces Vols Past Auburn 21-17 By BILL LANE Tlmes-News Sports Editor KNOXVILLE It was Stanley Morgan by land and Larry Seivers by air Saturday as the University of Tennessee treated its largest home crowd in history to a thrilling 21-17 victory over Southeastern Conference arch-rival Auburn With a packed house of 74611 looking on Tennessee marched 80 yards in 12 plays to erase a 17-14 deficit with 6:21 left in he game and managed to hold off the explosive Tigers on ball control once the Vols got possession again Randy Wallace quarterbacking the Vols the entire game showed flashes of brilliance as he twice directed his team from behind with air strikes On the ground it was Morgan a piston-legged 178-pound junior tailback churning for 138 yards in 18 carries Through the air it was sure-handed Larry Seivers a 6-4 205-pound split end from nearby Clinton who more than any other Vol was responsible for the victory Six times Wallace went successfully to Seivers with passes and his catches produced 109 of the 135 aerial yards (Tlmes-News Photos Joe Willis) Tennessee blockers Mickey Marvin (67) and Paul Johnson (52) provide protection for Vol quarterback Randy Wallace Wallace went all the way and produced nearly 200 yards total offense Victory Was Sweetest Four times during winning touchdown drive which started with 11:31 remaining in the final quarter just after Neil shanked a 51-yard field goal attempt Wallace hurled complete passes to the elusive Seivers for gains of 12 10 11 and 37 yards Appropriately the 37-vard pass to Seivers gathered in the deciding TD Seivers got around rover linebacker Raymond Phagan and was clearly open by the time Wallace's lofted pass met his outstretched hands Tennessee's defense up until this time had been like soft putty giving with the battering charges of Auburn quarterback Phil Gargis tailback Mitzi Jackson and fullback Kenny Burks But inspired by their 21-17 lead the Vols hardened on the ends and up the middle Auburn in that final six minutes 21 seconds was to have the football for only four more plays Rightside linebacker Andy Spiva who made 12 individual tackles to spearhead the defense for the day clobbered Jackson for no gain on a pitchout Gargis overthrew intended receiver Chris Vacarella Then Tennessee forced Auburn to punt as Secdrick McIntyre managed just six yards on a run Once the Vols got possession they killed all but eight seconds of the remaining 4:51 first by moving for four first downs secondly by intentionally allowing time to elapse as Wallace fell down on the ball Auburn regaining possession with eight seconds to play had one last crack at victory Retiring head coach Shug Jordan brought in strong-armed John Crane for a long bomb but right tackle David Page burst through to sack Ronnie McCartney (57) leaps Auburn blocker to stop Secdrick McIntyre on end sweep him for a five-yard loss with the final gun sounding Burks 194-pound bulldozer scored both of touchdowns on runs of 25 yards and one yard It was Burks who last year scored all three TDs for Auburn in a 21-0 win over the Vols Thus he has scored last five touchdowns against Tennessee Seivers caught two touchdown passes for the first and last scores Wallace stepped three yards into the end zone on a keeper play for the other Seviers' first TD catch was one that will forever haunt Jordan After Auburn had opened a 7-0 lead on 25-yard romp to the left on a pitchout Tennessee drove 73 yards to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter Wallace floated the pass to Seivers who at first did not see it coming As he turned two Auburn defenders zeroed in on the throw and appeared to have better position But More On Page 2C Col 5 The man of the hour for the Vols was split end Larry Seivers grabbing 6 passes from quarterback Randy Wallace for 109 yards and two touchdowns practice catching the ball at its highest point every said Seiver along with my reach I was able to catch the first touchdown The last touchdown pass was made possible because Randy threw a perfect throw Auburn was in an inside outside zone and the pass split the seam perfectly I got the game ball but I gave it to Coach Elliott (a former Auburn player and coach and now the Tennessee receiver coach) because the game meant something extra to Linebackers Andy Spiva and Steve Poole agreed that the Tigers were very crusty in the middle like last week we were over reacting to the flow of the said Poole center has to be the best that 1 have played against in the last two Former Church Hill star Bill Cole apparently has won himself a first team job at right cornerback Cole entered the game after Kenny Burks circled his own left end and scored the first Tiger touchdown from 25 yards out Cole a senior played the rest of the game By BOB COPAS Times-News Sports Correspondent KNOXVILLE is certainly the sweetest win for me and also for most of the older spoke Tennessee head coach Bill Battle here Saturday afternoon after his Volunteers had come from behind to defeat Tigers 21-17 have never been more proud of a team than I am of this continued Battle an ex-Alabama football standout "Auburn was certainly a strong football team and we were worried to death all week about their quick handoffs and draw plays" said Battle hope that we face another offensive line as big as this bunch out there today Huge offensive lineman Mickey Marvin spoke from experience years ago I was a fresham and we beat Auburn 21-0 here in the rain and I thought that they were just another team on our schedule Then last year we went to Auburn got beat badly and had to listen to all that bull for 365 days We knew what we had to do and every time I went up to the line of scrimmage becoming a large voice in Ohio Valley Conference football this year The Buc football team haunted once more by a medicore offensive performance and bad calls from the officials lost 21-14 to OVC favorite Eastern Kentucky before 8500 spectators here Saturday night The Colonels (3-0-1) were lucky even though split receiver Elmo Boyd said they lucky" said Boyd played like we were supposed to have played 1 wouldn't call it lucky" Boyd said EKU called his number on an X-screen pass play late in the third quarter ETSU led at the time 14-2 EKU quarterback Ernie House flipped the quick hitch pass to Boyd the blockers formed but House need no blockers He was gone headed for a 63-yard touchdown which put the OVC-leading Colonels back in the game worked like that said Boyd gained a lot of yards That put us back in it That was the big play But if it for the offensive line blocking I have The Colonels' Earl Cody missed the point-after when his kick sailed wide to the left But EKU which scored when Vic Smith knocked Reed Nelson's punt attempt into the end zone for a safety early in the first quarter was back in business Moments after Boyd zipped through the Buc defense ETSU pulled one of its rare big offensive plays Quarterback Lee Trawick (seven completions in 15 attempts for 131 yards) hit tight end Gerald Robinson on a look-in pattern Robinson was on the loose breaking away from Steve Fremmeyer (who slipped) and headed diagonally across field The play went 53 yards and ETSU had a first down at the 25 The Bucs had it going in their favor at this point Charles Clark had runs of four and 10 yards and the Bucs waved on by head coach Roy Frazier during the transition to start the fourth quarter had first and goal at the EKU nine Penalties entered in from hereon The Bucs had seven penalties totalling 76 yards and an illegal procedure penalty nullified George Fugate's six-yard run to the three Fugate got two of the penalized yards back and Trawick overthrew Tom Buchanan Fugate fumbled the football at the EKU 11 turning point was when we didn't get it in there" said Frazier "We had that penalty they called backfield in motion and then we fumbledthe ball" EKU got a lift when Steve Hess returned Reed punt 24 yards down the right sideline to give the Colonels a peach of an opportunity midway in the final period The Colonels had tied the game 14-14 when Hal Emerson scored the first of his two touchdowns from one yard out Cody had his kick flub when the Eddie Rich got a hand on it ETSU did nothing offensively and had to punt Nelson's kick sailed 64 yards but a penalty called well downfield and never really announced backed Nelson inside his More On Page 3C Col 1 EKU ETSU First Downs 14 10 Yords Rushing 220 13 Yords Possing 93 131 TOTAL OFFENSE 313 314
