"Special" prizes were awarded to David and Charlene Riskey, Rick and The Cradle, standing high on the historical island of Galveston, is special to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (DRT) because it where the idea for the organization was born in 1891. DRT member JoAn McCreary recently talked to The Comanche Peak Chapter of DRT about the history of The Cradle. In 1846 the small structure served as the law office of the first attorney licensed in the Republic of Texas, William Pitt Ballinger.

It originally stood as a separate building on the lawn of The Oaks," home of Betty Ballinger and her first cousin Hallie Bryan. Later it was moved up to the house and became the library. "Ballinger and Bryan were born in Galveston and shared many of the same interests, especially in literature and travel," McCreary said. "During the summer of 1891, the two young women liked to sit in the library studying Henderson Yoakum's 'History of Texas. They knew many prominent people during the days of colonization and of the Republic.

Their maternal grandfather, William Houston Jack, was a soldier at the battle of San Jacinto. The women thought the ideals of pioneer men and women of Texas must be perpetuated by their JoAn McCreary of DRT with photo of historic 'Cradle' descendants and conceived the idea of founding an organization of women for whom this task would take on a noble meaning." In the Houston home of Mrs. Andrew Briscoe, 16 women-all lineal descendants of heroes of the Texas Revolution-formed an organization called "Daughters of the Lone Star Republic" that later became the DRT. The Ballinger home was de- stroyed in the hurricane of 1900 and rebuilt in 1911. The small library was sold and moved away intact It fell into disrepair and obscurity.

In May of 1937, through the efforts of Hallie Bryan Perry, the small building was traced and found in a bad state of repair. The owner to tear.it down for sal- and was glad to sell it. The DRT obtained donations for the moving and re-. pair of the building, now lovingly referred to as The -Cradle," and relocated it to Menard Park in Galveston. A bronze plaque between the two doors reads, "The Cradle of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, formerly the library of the William Pitt Ballinger home The Oaks where in 1891 was born the idea of this organization."
