ruin and snow of the 6000 foot mountain top Forest Ranger Duke Barr and Assistant Ranger John Cathey in Erwin Tennessee organized a search for the best tree Forest Service crews trudged up and down the steep slopes with their eyes to the sky looking for the right tree In all seven candidate trees were chosen Final selection was made jointly by Forest Service officials and members of the Tennessee Christmas Tree Growers ROAN MOUNTAIN High on Roan Mountain stands a Fraser Fir about to become famous It will soon decorate the front lawn of the nations Capitol Building in Washington While the search for the tree was in progress plans were being made to get the tree from the remote slopes to Washington It seemed as though a sky hook was the only answer The 68th Tactical Air Support Group at Shaw Air Force Base volunteered to furnish a large helicopter to lift the tree from the mountain Interstate 81 New The tree will be transported by air approximately six miles to Roan Mountain on Nov 27 There It will be loaded on a 45 foot flat-bed trailer The Cherokee National Forest is providing this years tree Fraser Fir is best suited for Christmas trees because of its graceful shape and its ability to hold needles for several weeks after it is cut Elevations above 5000 feet on Roan Mountain are the only place on the Cherokee National Forest where fir grows Unlike most Christmas trees which are tended trimmed and The 45-foot tree selected has a trunk diameter of 14 Inches has a branch spread of 22 feet and Is about 45 years old A send-off ceremony will be held in the community of Roan Mountain on Dec 3 at 2 pm Arrangements are now being made by the Roan Mountain Citizens Club who annually sponsor the Tennessee Rhododendron Festival The public will be Invited In a few weeks when the tree on Hoan Mountain is cut a small opening in the spruce-fir forest will be created In that opening several small seedlings now stand the result of seed dropped from cones on a 45 foot Fraser Fir which goes to Washington Section Complete under a separate contract Smith said The Interstate work involved grading and the construction of a drainage system and five bridges on a section of the superhighway beginning at the Washington County Line and extending to 04 miles west of the Clinchfield Railroad The work on State Route 137 involved grading and the construction of a drainage system two bridges roadway base and paving from 05 miles north of Interstate 81 to 04 miles south of the Interstate BLOUNTVILLE Bums Baker Inc McKinnon Bridge Co and Summers-Taylor Paving Co of Elizabethton have finished work on a section rof Interstate 81 and an intersection portion of State Route 137 in Sullivan County for the state Bureau of Highways Transporation Commissioner Robert Smith announced today Hie project began July 7 -1969 and cost $3958232 Paving 'of the Interstate portion of the project will be completed Opportunity Given To Shape Foreign Policy coincide accordingly Weekly discussions however of individual groups may begin and end during any eight-week period after Feb 11 Special background study material developed by FPA will provide the facts and nonpartisan policy alternatives for discussion groups Participants may purchase the discussion booklets for $3 each This will be the only cost involved in the series The primary objective of the program is to allow every citizen the opportunity to inform himself and to express his own opinions on foreign policy to Congress and the State Department through provided opinion ballots Interested persons and Center of the University of Virginias School of Continuing Education here Individuals members of local organizations educational institutions business firms and other groups will be taking part in this national discussion of key issues in US Foreign Policy beginning on Feb 11 The Southwest Virginia Regional Center will arrange activities recruit organizers of informal discussion groups and coordinate special events during the Great Decisions program The intent of the School of Continuing Education is to provide service to institutions and groups which will aid their participation in the series The project endorsed by many educational establishments is the chief function of the Foreign Policy Association Founded in 1918 the FPA is a 'private non-profit organization which works at keeping the public informed of current key foreign policy decisions Eight critical foreign policy issues will previde weekly topics for TV and radio broadcasts special newspaper coverage and informal discussion groups giving every citizen an opportunity to participate The nation-wide program is scheduled for February 11 through April 1 1973 and media coverage is planned to Milligan Has Two Nights
