Kansas City Knocks Orioles Tigers Retake Lead sweep by the last-place Texas Rangers over the weekend Incredibly the Orioles still are only one game behind the front-running Detroit Tigers who gained that edge by beating Texas 8-3 Norm Cash hit his 15th and 16th home runs of the season to drive in three runs way I can do something to stop it The league has to come to a decision If they turn down the protest Im done If they dont do anything about it all the pitchers will start throwing them Rico Petrocelli who had struck out twice and hit into a double play earlier in the game stroked a two-run homer in the eighth inning to give Boston its winning margin over the As Rookie Lynn McGlothen with ninth-inning relief from Luis Tiant picked up his second victory in three decisions Bobby Darwins first major league grand slam homer lifted Jim Perry and the Twins to victory over Milwaukee and Clyde Wright pitched an eight-hitter for his first victory since June 24 as California beat the Yankees inning and Mike Cuellar carried a 2-1 advantage into the ninth when Richie Scheinblum singled with two out and Piniella followed with his eighth homer Norm Cash hit two home runs and Jim Northrup one as the Tigers jumped off to a 7-0 lead over Texas after three Innings Joe Coleman with ninth-inning relief from John Hiller gained his 11th triumph Perry tossed a four-hitter and rookie Ron Lolich belted his first major league home run for the Indians White Sox Manager Chuck Tanner protested the game complaining that Perry was throwing an illegal pitch I know Perry throws an illegal pitch and theres no question in my mind about it Tanner explained This is the only Earl Weaver after Lou Piniella hit a two-run homer with two out in the ninth inning to give the Royals their fourth success in six meetings with Baltimore We work extra every day taking early batting practice but I think were past that stage What else is there to say? Im all talked out I dont know if this is going to last all year or if the guys can do something different" Elsewhere Gaylord Perry earned his 14th victory of the year as the Cleveland Indians tripped the Chicago White Sox 2-1 the Boston Red Sox beat the Oakland A's 4-2 the Minnesota Twins routed the Milwaukee Brewers 8-1 and the California Angels beat the New York Yankees 4-3 Baltimore scored two runs in the fifth By MARTIN LADER UPI Sports Writer 0 Nothing more than the law of gravity and some capable pitching appears to be keeping the Baltimore Orioles alive in the American League East The Orioles won the American League pennant the last three years with the help of an awesome hitting attack but they carried a weak 222 team average into Monday nights game against Kansas City and today they are dragging along with their second five-game losing streak of the season With Mondays 3-2 loss to the Royals Baltimore now has dropped 14 of its last 18 games at home including a four-game fourth home run of the season as Detroit made rookie Don Stanhouses first major league decision a loss Northrup hit his homer with a man on in the third and Cash Mowed with his first of the night after Bill Freehan walked in the same inning Cash added his second of the game with none on leading off the eighth So while the Orioles arent doing anything too positive about helping their own cause they are still in the pennant race only because the relative weakness of the East Division is holding the other clubs down to their leveL The Tigers are the only other team in the division playing better than 500 ball I dont know what else to do and what else I can say said Oriole Manager oundun Joe Coleman went the first eight innings for Detroit but after giving up a hit and a walk to start the ninth he was relieved by John Hiller The victory went to Coleman his 11th against seven defeats Jim Northrup also banged out his Butkus spins four-hitter Royals Gain Split With Triple Theft night before returning home Thursday to do battle with Covington RBI 5 2 3 1 1 1 0 3 3 3 1 1 1 2 1 3 7 7 3 3 (FIRST GAME) WYTHEVILLE Coggms if Albert Hammond rf Michaiec 3b Workman Fitzgerald 1b Pressley ct DeBurhl 3b Miller Bmg Totals AB 31 5 3 5 5 5 3 3 2 2 14 1 1 1 0 0 0 0 IS 13 AB ft RBI 2 0 0 0 KINGSPORT Rockwell 3b Bradford ss Zdeb If Rahe 1b Harris 3b Ray rf Cash cf Buchanan Sepulveda Bailey Kapper Totals Score by innings Wytheville Kingsport Michaiec Rockwell Harris Cash Bailey 3 OP DeBurhl Albert and Fitzgerald Rockwell and Rahe LOB Wytheville 4 Kingsport 9 3B Hammond Zdeb HR Ham mond SB Pressley Zdeb ip er bb 400 0-14 ioo o- i 4 3 3 4 1 2 1 1 3 4 Miller 3 1 0 Bmg IW3 1) 5 3 2 Sepulveda (L 1 31 3 0 7 Bailey 1 3 3 7 7 Knapper 3 13 3 faced five batters third faced two batters third WP Miller Bing T-3 10 By BILL LANE Times-News Sports Editor Kingsports Royals got a bad game out of their system with a 14-2 loss to Wythe ville in the opener then bounced back to win the other end of a doubleheader 4-3 by getting the deciding run on a rare triple steal at Fred Johnson Stadium Monday night The Royals to put it mildly got shellacked in the lidlifter as Wytheville warped three pitchers with a 15-hit attack which included a 330-foot homer by Chuck Hammond in the first inning that started the fireworks Kingsport managed just four hits in the opener as the Royals seemingly appeared to be stalked by two Braves pitchers starter Ken Miller who left early because of wildness and reliever Larry Bing Despite the 15 hits by the Braves Kingsport tossed in five errors kicking the ball around as if it were a football Royals manager Jay Hankins said it was probably a good thing his team got it all out of their system at one time The Royals down by a 3-0 margin in the second game until the fourth inning seemed headed for a complete collapse But a rumbling extra-base hit attack rang out in the fourth and fifth innings In the fourth Karl Jacobson Juan Quesada and Kevin Bova stroked back-to-back doubles to cut the Wytheville deficit to 3-2 In the fifth the Royals chased starting pitchers Len Chiapetta as Gary Harris walked and Buddy Kay smacked a double off the centerfield fence Reliever John Travis then walked Jacobson and Quesada forcing Harris in with the tying run With the bases-loaded Kingsport pulled off an unlikely feat a triple steal And only in the Appalachian League where the action is fast furious and sometimes frantic could such a thing happen Travis let go with a pitch which momentarily got away from catcher Juan deValla who recovered it in time to stop Ray from reaching home Or did he? Ray retreated to third base and the other baserun-ners Jacobson and Quesada were clogged up at second deValla rifled a throw to second and Ray galloped to the plate with the winning run with Jacobson taking third when shortstop Rick Albert returned the ball to the plate and Quesada pilling up at second It was the first triple steal in Kingsport Royal history and woke up some 860 fans who had been put to sleep by the opening-game 12-run loss Stan Butkus a college pitcher from Alabama whos a cousin of National Football League star Dick Butkus pitched the second-game victory for the Royals his first outing Butkus tagged for four hits and three runs in the first two innings settled down to pitch an outstanding game He didn't allow a hit after the second inning and at one stretch retired nine Braves in succession before a walk broke the string The victory by Kingsport combined with Bluefields 15-7 romp over Bristol threw a monkeywrench into the Appy league race Neither team can claim a solid hold on first place Bluefield is in first with two less losses than Kingsport and Bristol but the latter two have won one more game than the Orioles Kingsport hits the road toward Pulaski today for a game tonight and Wednesday (SECONOGAME) LOOK MA NO EYES!
