Christmas Perfect Time-ToGive-Ghildren-Books By MARTHA BYRD Christmas is the perfect time to think of books Not only do books make appropriate gifts for every taste and age but the holiday and the bad weather season offer a marvelous time for reading If there are children on your Christmas shopping list you are fortunate Take time to browse at your bookstore and to help you choose here art-some suggestions my own plus those of several childrens librarians For the very young pay particular attention to the quality and imaginativeness of the illustrations as well as the story I was charmed by Go Tell Aunt Rhody (Robert Quackenbush Lippincott) a pic satellites computers television etc there is room to suit a particular interest Factual and simple they have merit for adults also Girls can be hard to choose for but A Witchs Garden (Miriam Young Atheneum) skillfully handles two pertinent themes bigotry and the influence one human can have over another The heroine is a young girl upset over her communitys exclusiveness who meets a woman suspiciously like a witch When bad things begin to happen the results are at first comical then sobering Also for girls roughly 10-14 is "I Will Go Barefoot All Summer for You (Katie Lyle Lippincott) Again the heroine is a young girl caught up in the confusion and pain of transition from bare feet to first love In confusion she runs away but an understanding man helps her see herself her familyF and love itself in a firmer perspective Other books recommerided for grades 4 through 7 are The Upstairs Room" (Jonathan Reiss Crowell) The Witches of Worm (Zilpha Snyder Atheneum) and the last winner-of the John Newberry medal for distinguished books for children Julie of the Wolves" (Jean George Harper) A librarian added a note from experience When shopping for childrens books she said dont forget the books you loved as a child If you still remember them they are probably not outdated And wouldnt it be sad for a child to grow up without Grimms and Pooh?" ture puzzle and song book that substitutes pictures for phrases and exercises the ingenuity as well as presenting new words Children seem quicker at the game than adults and it is a good book for the child who still wants to be read to or have a little help Also for ages up to eight consider the Frog and Toad books (Arnold Lobel Harpers! and The Funny Little Woman (Arlene Mosel Dutton) which won the Caldecott medal for Blair Lents illustrations For the boys on your list look for biographies such as that of Hank Aaron (one library reports a long waiting list for it) and also books such as the How It Works series put out by Putnams With separate volumes for motorcycles communication REVIEW TTc3trco- A Little Bit Of tf Sugar Helps The Brahms Go Down Artists Works On Display At Abingdon Craft Shop fying unities of landscape architecture and people Napps said "There are of course distortions largely the result of the impact of urban technology upon the county Yet many scenes within the county are notable expressions of man working in harmony with nature of being steward of the earth' It is these scenes which I paint The Cave House Craft Shop is owned and operated by the Holston Mountain Arts and Crafts Co-operative a non-profit group of area craftspersons and artists The shop is open from 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Saturday and from 1 pm to 5 pm on Sundays through Christmas Sunday Dec 16 1973 KINGSPORT TIMES-NEWS 9-C The Cave House Craft Shop in Abingdon is now exhibiting paintings by Klell Napps of Bristol Va The show will run from now until Dec 24 This showing is a part of the Cave House Craft Shops continuing series of individual artists work The series began in early summer Napps is a sociology professor at Virginia Highlands Community College Before moving to Bristol he lived jn North Carolina where he was involved in religious and adult education He received is education at Centre College in Danville Ky and North Carolina State University Napps paintings represent his view of the people of Washington County Va He views the rural areas as representing a unique synthesis of nature man and his works Kingsports Most Complete BOOK SHOP By MARGY CLARK Times-News Staff Writer Maestro Willem Bertsch must be part showman as well as serious musician so if it takes a little carnival added to the classics to get audiences out more power to him! In other words a kind of research toward a novel? McCarthys perennial grin changed to delighted laughter Would you like to rephrase the question! I tried again but no apparently the novel and the history book are polar extremes not only in conception but in the writing process itself McCarthy says that once he is ready to writg the words come easily and quickly "I go into a state of mind My hands do the thinking It is not a conscious process Creativity is an elusive thing to pin down but McCarthy finally made his point with a parable While living in Spain some years ago he had a novelist friend a kindred soul a madman This friend was in a bar where companions were quizzing him "Where do you get your ideas?" While the conversation was taking place only the novelist was paying any attention to a dwarf who was crawling along the top of the bar methodically draining the abandoned mugs of their last dregs of beer I cant explain how one creates a novel McCarthy mused Ifs like jazz They create as they play and maybe only those who can do it can understand it" Child of God (Random House) focuses on a strange man a native of the East Tennessee mountains and one of society's misfits LISBON PORTUGAL AND ALGARVE FIND THEM HERE: By MARTHA BYRD East Tennessee has a reputation for breathtaking scenery mountain laurel and moonshine It also produces top-notch novelists like Cormac McCarthy and with his third book Child of God McCarthy gives us a picture of East Tennessee both strange and familiar The secret of its strength lies in McCarthy himself his feelings about his subject and the particular approach he takes to his writing The approach to writing was the theme of a conversation with McCarthy when Child of God was released in December Obviously amused at my questions the mustachioed suede-suited novelist settled back in his swivel chair grey eyes dancing to trylo explain to the historian how the novelist plies his craft I dont analyze it it is just something I do You write about something you know very well If you havent experienced it you cant write about it Gradually a philosophy seemed to emerge Living is experience and experience for the novelist translates into words Writing is a compulsion McCarthy Hertz Koffman's Book Shop Oakwood Market Greenacres Price Ramey Inc Shelby Street House Banking and Trust Co All Branches Center Street Restaurant Dobyns-Taylor Gateway Books Inc Golden Rule Grocery Co See beautiful scenery and just live it up with a great travel package from J00 SPAIN Out of doors for golf and tennis on the Costa-Del-Sol in February and March from AVAILABLE SOON THESE ARE IDEAL GIFTS! 314 REFLECTIONS AND BLUEBONNETS by John Campbell 29 241A 1500 CARIBBEAN MEXICO QU1QQ San) See Mexico with the Moose Club Tour package in "March Independent trips on many of the Islands Also a good variety of cruises available SKIING Check with us on our New Week-End Bus Service to the North Carolina Ski areas 222 EAST CENTER STREET PHONE: 244-7371 KINGSPORT TENNESSEE 37660 New Putting Green How many timet have you wished for few moments of golfing relaxation on a joiny day ot home Now yog con take putting green with you almost anywhere with Honton Golf Products' new portable putting green Designed to simulate a typical green ond the cup is regulation size 4 Vi in in diomefer A boll caddy slot retains ony overshot bolls A 9 foot approoch grass carpet is standard in two qualifies Extra length turf is also available on request Three models Regular Deluxe and Executive range price from M35 to 25 Representative of AJKZRIGAN Please Place Orders Now UMfTfO COITIONS Fiction i THE HONORARY CONSUL -Grohom Greene THE HOLLOW HILLS Marv Stewort THE FIRST DEADLY SIN -Lawrence Sanders BURR Gore Vidal THEOPHILUS NORTH Thornton Wilder THE SALAMANDER Morris West THE BILLION DOLLAR SURE THING Paul Erdman WORLD WITHOUT END AMEN Jimmy Breslin HARVEST HOME Thomas Trvon ONCE IS NOT ENOUGH -Jacauellne Susonn Nonfiction THE JOY OF SEX Ale Comtort -HOW TO BE YOUR OWN BEST FRIEND Mildred Newman et ol PENTIMENTO Lillian Heilman THE ONION FIELD Joseph Worn bouoh COSELL Howrd Cosell ALISTARIR COOKE AMERICA Alistair Cook portrait of a MARRIAGE Nigel Nlcolsoo IN ONE ERA AND OUT THE OTHER Sam Levenson UPSTAIRS AT THE WHITE HOUSE WATCHERS PROGRAM COOKBOOK Jeon Ntdetch COME BY AND GET YOUR FREE COPIES OF THE AMERICAN EXPRESS TRAVEL BOOkS: THE 8-DAY EUROPE BOOK THE SPAIN BOOK THE MEXICO BOOK AND THE CARIBBEAN BOOK KINGSPORT TRAVEL SERVICE INC PHONE 246-3233 239 Chorlyiont Av KINGSPORT TENNESSEE LAYAWAY NOW FOR CHRISTMAS AT IDEAL A150 PICK UP YOUR XMAS CARDS FOR IJWPRINTIHO.
