Wins The stage is set for the game of the year in area high school football circles Dobyns-Bennett and Johnson Cityfight it out next Ftiday night on the Hilltopper field It will be an old rivalry renewed for the two titans For they haven't met in football since Steve Spurrier was a senior at Johnson City and now the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner is in the pro ranks playing with the San Francisco Forty Niners of the National Football League The game to be played at Municipal Stadium will decide whether Johnson City rakes in the whole pot in the Big Seven Conference race or is forced to share the winnings with D-B and Morristown D-B has four starting backs who are going to be hard to overlook when the all-conference selections are made Richard McGlothlin Andy Brooks Archie Hensley and Ron Releford Johnson City has a quarterback who is a serious contender for All-State laurels in Tommy Sholes who thrives on throwing touchdown passes to end Sammy Stewart Latest victory for D-B came Friday night over Oak Ridge 21-0 in the Atomic City McGlothlin scored one touchdown ran the ball 18 times for 60 yards and completed' a pass for 17 more Hensley scored a TD and was top ground gainer for the night with 74 yards in 10 carries Brooks had 64 yards rushing from scrimmage in addition to a 56-yard pass interception runback and Releford turned in his usual blocking and running performance The win was D-Bs seventh against two losses and sixth in a row The two defeats by a total margin of eight points were inflicted by Virginia state power Glass and Morristown the lOth-ranked team in Tennessee Big'defensive cog for D-B against the Ridgers was junior guard Kent Stair who probably couldnt have done any better if he had been in the Oak Ridge huddle listening to the" plays The straight year under A Clevenger and Blountville closed out Baker on the LPD point championship Baker however despite his past heroic and the Individual praise bestowed on him throughout his high school career took it all in stride After all the Gate City flash set career scoring record for Southwest Virginia and in his three varsity seasons led the Blue Devils to a 29-1 record With numerous college scouts wooing him Baker now must make up his mind where he plans to continue his gridiron career Baker who runs like a Sherman tank was overturned several times by Church Hills dandy champion Sullivan from the throne in the ULC In keeping with tradition the Wildcats splashed one another with Coke after the game a substitute for champagne It was all part of the victory celebration in the dressing room Jeff Baker did his typically outstanding job running The All-State fullback picked up 146 yards in 25 carries and while he was scoring a mere eight points a wild stallion by the
