Voir included substantially more downs than upf That was before last Saturday of course UTs 24-13 victory over Georgia Tech transformed Bubba Wyche from an obscure scrub to the man of the hour Events of a warm Saturday afternoon at Neyland Stadium suddenly made it a matter of more passing interest: Bubbas actual name is Joe Wyche Jr that the last name is pronounced like the 25th letter of the alphabet with a ch tagged on the end of it that he attended North Fulton High School in Atlanta came to Tennessee with only a onc-year scholarship because of knee trouble spent a year with the team and was consigned to mop-up duty late in a game when the outcome had been settled The good-natured Georgian hit both a peak and a valley in his career in early September when he was told by Coach Doug Dickey he was to be the second-team quarterback and then apruptly lost his chance to play when he was hospitalized for an appendectomy Wyche was projected again into the thick of Tennessees offensive operation by a rare combination of injuries that might have left a team with less character shell-shocked and dejected First Dewey Warren the pre-season All-America quarterback candidate was lost with a knee injury Deweys rep lacement transplanted tailback Charlie Fulton then broke a rib late in the first quarter of the Tech game Dickey summoned Wyche to his side for a quick conference sent him In Old Rivalry Yastrzemski Receives New Contract At Fenway Yastrzemski who had won the American League batting title in 1963 with a 321 average went into the 1967 campaign with a 293 career average and boosted it five points to 298 His RBI total of 121 was 27 higher than his best previous effort of 94 in the 1962 season His accomplishments in pacing the Red Sox to their first pennant in 21 years earned the generally accepted title of the year of the Yaz in Boston and produced a flood of automobile stickers calling for Yaz for Mayor even though he is a resident of suburban Lynnfield the Giants that their early 3-2 mark should be taken seriously Heavily favored to romp to the NFL crown the Packers have had troubles since the start of the season and last Sunday lost to the Minnesota Vikings 10-7 The Giants on the other hand have been surprisingly effective in their early games and last Sunday scored a spectacular 27-24 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers In Sundays other games the Baltimore Colts play the Vikings at Minnesota the Philadelphia Eagles meet the Cardinals at St Louis the Washington Redskins oppose the Rams at Los Angeles the Dallas Cowboys go against the Steelers at Pittsburgh the New NFL Roundup By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer Itll be like old times when the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants meet Sunday in one of the National Football Leagues top games Its been almost five yaars or smce the Packers beat the Giants in the 1962 NFL title game that anything more than Green Bay pride has been at stake against the Giants The Packers have been the scourge of the league since then while Giant fortunes declined to the lowest point in their history Both teams will have something to prove the Packers that their early 3-1-1 record shouldnt be taken seriously and D-B Coasts To Victory In C-CRace IT'S A MAN'S WORLD-f IRST FLOOR we're open monday evenings Wednesday afternoons too Orleans Saints play the Forty-Niners at San Francisco the Chicago Bears tackle Browns at Cleveland and Atlanta Falcons oppose Lions at Detroit Favorites are the Packers by 10 points the Colts by 14 the Cardinals by two the Rams by 13 the Cowboys by seven the Forty-Niners by 15 the Browns by six and the Lions by 12 Despite their slow start Green Bay has the best overall defense and the best pass defense record in the league The game will be a stern test for Fran Tarkenton the former Viking whose brilliant passing has given the Giants the best total offense record in the league Tarkenton has completed 75 of 134 passes for a 560 percentage 1294 yards and 10 touchdowns to rate No 3 in the league Johnny Unitas must complete only eight passes against the Vikings Sunday to set a new all-time NFL career mark of 2119 completions The current mark almost sure to fall was set at 2118 by A Tittle The Colts are the only unbeaten team in the league with a 4-0-1 record while the Vikings stand only 1-4 after their win over the Packers The Eagles and Cardinals will be trying to bounce back from tough losses last Sunday BOSTON (UPI) The Boston Red Sox Thursday called a special news conference for Friday morning for the purpose of announcing a new contract for Triple Crown winner and Most Valuable Player candidate Carl Yastrzemski The club said the special session at Fenway Park would deal only with the Yastrzemski contract and not with the coaching staff vacancy created by the dismissal of the veteran pitching boss Sal Maglie Though the Red Sox do not disclose salary figures Yastrzemski was believed to have been earning between $40000 and $50000 when he had his best major league season while pacing the Red SOx to the 1967 American League pennant The brilliant leftfielder who was named to the American League All-Star team last July and has reaped a steady and spectacular harvest of postseason honors batted 326 hit 44 homers and drove in 121 runs last season A team leader both in' the field and on the bases Yastrzemski had a series of late-season talks with club owner Tom Yawkey when preliminary details of his new pact were apparently worked out Immediate speculation was that the new pact would put the 28 -year old one-time Notre Dame student into the $80000-a-year range with additional clauses based on home runs However most Boston observers believed Yastrzemski would fall short of the reported $100000 to $125000 paid to Hail of Famer Ted Williams during the latter part of his career as the Red Sox lefthander Williams was succeeded by Yastrzemski Divorce court action on Williams after he had completed his career showed that his actual salary was in the $65000 range Since he retired he apparently made up the difference by serving as spring training batting instruc tor and he is listed on the clubs table of organization as a vice president though he rarely visits Fenway Park There was a possibility therefore that Yastrzemskis deal also would include a form of deferred payment for the period after he retires estimated around 1974 Yastrzemskis seventh major league season was spectacular as he broke Williams Red Sox record for homers by lefthanded batter 43 set in 1949 and more than doubled his best previous single season production of 20 set in 1965 JOHNSON CITY Dobyns-Bennett cross-country runners sped to walloping 1844 win over Science Hill High School here yesterday The Indian runners picked up seven of the first
