Thirteen Days Later prom Europe. The Great Western arrived at New York on Saturday afternoon at 6 oclock, bringing Liverpool and London papers of the 17lh, Paris of the 14th, and Dublin and Havre of the 15ih of August. We make up the annexed summary of news: There has been no change In cotton, although the state of the markets was rather unfavorable. Manufacturers were so fully employed that large orders had been refused. The accouchment of the Queen took place on the 6th inst.

Her Majesty has given birth to a prince, whose title, as the second male offspring, will be, of course, the Duke of York. On the 14th the Princess de Joinville was safely delivered of a princess at Neoilly. Letters from Florence, of the 30th ulL, mention the death of Joseph Bonaparte, once King of Naples, afterwards of Spain. He died on the 28th of July, after a long illnese. Orders have been given for the immediate eqnip-ment of the royal steamer yacht Victoria and Albert.

She has accordingly been maated, and received on board her fuel. Parliament stands adjourned to September 5, to enable the House of Lords to give judgment in the ease of Mr. OConnell. Mr. Washington Irving haul arrived in France on leave of absence for two month from his di-iomatic duties in Spain.

After a short visit there will visit London. One of the most interesting events of recent times is the abdication of old Mehemet All in favor of his son Ibrahim. The old roan fall of years and honors, intends, it is said, to take a pilgrimage to the city of the prophet. Two reporta relative to the post-office espionage were laid before Parliament and their contents have afforded food for much comment since. The Government organs contend that these reports exonerate the military from the odium of systematically abusing the aecresy which ought to belong to communications passing through the post-office.

Accounts from Constantinople to the 17th ulu state, that information had been received of the defeat of the Russians by the Circassians in Daghestan. The Journal of the Two Sicilies, of the 27th ulL, publishes the sentences and execution of nine of the unfortunste young men who sailed from Corfu in June last for Calabrias. On the 24th the military commission sitting at Cosenza pronounced sentence of death upon seventeen of the persons implicated in the descent upon Calabria, nine of whom were carried into effect the following day. Murder of an American Captain on the high Seas. The Thomas Bennet, a vessel on her voyage from Liverpool to Charleston, S.

whence she on the 3d instant, returned on the 14th in consequence of the murder of Captain Halsey by the cook. She had been out five days when the melancholy event occurred, but had only reached the Bay of Biscay, when the chief mate ut back, and on arrival the murderer, a fine ooking fellow named John Kent, was apprehended and placed in confinement. The Abolition of mprisonuent for Debt The above act which received the royal assent on the 19th inst. by commission, came into operation the following day. Dreadful Fire near Gravesend.

On Wednesday, ihe 7th instant, the greater part of the village of Lower Thorne, near Gravesend, was destroyed by fire. Ireland. The osuall weekly meeting was held on the 12th inst. The chair was taken by Richard Gorman, Mr D. OConnell, announced the receipt ol various subscriptions and proceeded to give the usual weekly return from the prison.

He was happy to be able to inform the association that the imprisoned martyrs were in good health and most excellent spirits, enjoying the glorious fact of the perfect tranquility of Ireland throughout its entire extent. Judgment in the case of the traversers will be given on the 2d proximo, and although it is generally understood that it will confirm the proceeding in the Irish court, much will depend upon the opinions which the judges may entertain with regard to the proceeding connected wiih the monster trials, whether any portion of Mr. Connells term of incarceration will be curtailed. France. The session of the France Legislature for 1844 was closed by Royal ordinance on the 5th inst.

In the Chamber of Deputies M. de la Roche-jacquelin said that it was impossible the assembly could seperate without replying to the insulting languago used in Parliament by a minister of Great Britain, In speaking of the naval officers of France. Morocco Bombardment of Tangier. The following very important Intelligence has arrived by express: Paris, Thursday morning, 7 oclock. The Journal des Debate of this morning contains the subjoined announcement of the bombardment of Tangier: We are assured that the Government received last night the following important news from the African coast: The answer of the ultimatum sent to the Emperor of Morocco by the Priuce commanding the French fleet not having been satisfactory, hia Royal Highness the Prince de Joinville commenced firing againet the advanced works which protect the fortress of Tangier.

These works were altogether destroyed. The European quarter of the town baa been spaied. The English consul general, Mr. Hay, took refuge on board the vessel of the French Admiral. United States Public Securities.

Havre, Aug. 12. The cotton market was tolerably animated; 11,000 bales were taken for consumption, and prices were very firm, particularly for Louisiana and Mobile, which realized rather higher rates. The stocks in all hands do not exceed 120,000 bales, against 156,000 last year, aud 3 Tut Misuse oo Last Night. We sent out a few hand-bills yesterday, announcing that the Hon.

E. J. Shields, of Tennessee, would speak at the Whig Pavilion in the evening. Although tire circulation of the notice was quite limited, the meeting was very large, and a considerable number of ladies were presenL Mr. Shields spoke with great animationand power, coming fully up to the high of his audience.

In portraying the political and personal character of Mr. Polk, whose district he formerly represented in Congress, he was terribly severe, but perfectly truthful, and extremely happy. His remarks were received with frequent and hearty applause. When Mr. Shields sat down, Mr.

Thomas Harney, of Mississippi, whom we have noticed as an apostate from the Whig party, asked permission to wddresi the Whigs three quarters of an hour. The Whigs, with a liberality that must appear strange and unaccountable to the Loco focos, immediately called him out by acclamation, and he made a speech. His effort shewed a good heart enough, but a rather weak mind. He declared hitnself a nullifier, reprobated the doctrinaof protection -thoroughly all its forms, and, throughout his whole speech, jumped from subject to subject as abruptly and as nimbly as ha supposed that somebody was in hot chase after him. The audience heard him very but, with all their politeness, they could not help laughing at him two or three times most immoderately.

When he sat down, there was a geneial call for Mr. Chilton, of Vicksburg, who promptly rose, and, having the advantage a thorough knowledge of Harneys wltole political course, be gave him one of the genteelest, keenest, and severest casligaliens that we ever saw administered in any public assembly. The shouts of the multitude attested their delight at the operation. We shall have something more to say of the several speeches in our next. Alter the close of the speaking, Mr.

Wolfe, the president of the Clay club, announced by authority that there would be another meeting at the Pavilion to-night, to which Whigs and Democrats were alike invited; and, that not only Mr. Harney, but the other Democratic speakers were solicited to attend and to participate in the discussion. Mr. Harney at once declared that be should piobably accept the invitation. So we may expect a general discussion between the Whigs and the Locofocos to-night.

This is a point, to which the Whigs have long and vainly been reeking to bring their opponents. Most heartily do we congratulate them on their final success. Arbist or a Postmaster. Some weeks ago, a letter, ooutaining a draft of $280 on the Bank of Kentucky in this city, was mailed at Madi-sonville, Hopkins county, addressed to a person in Oldham. The letter not having reached its destination, information to that effect was communicated to the post-office here.

Upon in quiring at the bank yesterday, it was found that the draft had been presented by and paid to a Mr. Hancock, postmaster at Cairo, in Hender son county, through whose pos -office tho letter had to pass. Hancock, happening to be in the city, was immediately arrested, and is now in jail awaiting a judicial examination. The draft whs endorsed by Mr. Smidlofthis city, to whom, we understand, Hancock gave yesterday, before his arrest, $180 and the remainder in an order.
