in the Southern Division race will be home at Howard Johnson Field for six days playing Bluefield Wytheville and Elizabeth-ton in two-game matchups The Twins lost another double-header Tuesday night Eddie Carters home run over the rightfield wall to lead off the top of the first inning staked Sala to the only lead he and his teammates would have the rest of the opener Sala gave up a lone single to Kingsports initial batter first baseman Bob Olah in the fifth inning During four innings of throwing no-hit ball Sala retired the Mets in order in three of the innings but had walked two Mets who were left on base in the third inning He walked four and fanned nine while Mets pitcher John Wenrick gave up only four hits walked three and struck out seven Cardinals "It was mostly fastballs I was throwing Sala said The 6-2 left-hander wasnt sure it was his best game of the season but he said he was happy it "helped us keep our winning streak going Thats what is important now Sala remembered a game at Wytheville in which he pitched nearly as well "They (Kingsport) can swing the bats Sala said "Even though weve beatem them a lot theyre tough The Mets got the hits but the Cardinals got the runs in the second game in which Mike Henry (3-1) was the winner and Mark Grater picked up his seventh save of the season with one pitch Grater was amused that the one pitch ended the game Grater also has a 3-2 record to go with the saves The last pitch was to the Mets pinch-hitter Olah who had the lone hit in the opener Johnson Citys four-run inning in the second game featured only two hits singles by Carter and Vince Kindred Kindred stole second and third while Eddie Looper who had walked stole second to set up the first of two Redbird runs A walk to Mike Alvarez loaded the bases and Mike Sennes groundout scored Kindred Looper was pushed across by another walk to Frank Abreu and the Cardinals added two more runs before Steve Jeffers flied to right for the final out Johnson City point in Tuesday nights double header victory over Kingsport at Fred Johnson Park The pitching magic thats been the hallmark of the Redbirds now 19-game winning streak came to the fore as Johnson City beat the Mets 1-0 behind David Salas one-hit pitching in the opener and then withstood a strong Kingsport comeback to take the second game 5-2 It was Johnson Citys eighth win in nine games against the over the Los Angeles Dodgers UL roundup Ryan who has pitched five career no-hitters didnt allow a hit until Steve Sax looped a single to shallow left field with one out in the sixth Ryan 8-7 also gave Powers doesnt think twice when asked the question "Why do you cheat death for a living? If Powers one of Hollywoods more successful stuntmen had a dollar every time hes heard that question he probably wouldnt be cheating death but he is And he loves it "I cant quit he said "It may be dangerous sometimes but a stunt never hurt me I did I hurt 'myself by not doing what I should do Its just mind over matter "I can say this though Whenever Id get hurt doing a stunt Id never make the same mistake again Powers will perform a stunt at the New Kingsport Speedway Saturday night using a factory stock automobile The stunt a "Dynamite T-bone requires Powers to drive through an exploding car at 71 mph Its quite an explosion he said Til drive into another car that is equipped with two sticks of dynamite Hopefully Ill drive right through it and my car will go end-over-end and land on the wheels Ill be using a dealership car with no roll bar no cage and no safety features other than a safety belt or harness Jim McMahon The Associated Press PLATTEVILLE Wis Bears Coach Mike Ditka says he no longer is worried about William nThe Refrigerator Perrys weight The Chicago defensive lineman is down to 323 pounds and working to lose more Now Ditka is fretting about another Bear he says is too fat: quarterback Jim McMahon "I dont know exactly what Jim weighs now but hes overweight Ditka said "Jim came to camp in shape last year and could 1 the things he tries to do "He could run roll out twist Ditka Baid "This year he wasnt in as good a shape and when he did some of those things that he tried to do a year ago I think that was the difference McMahon who is listed at 190 pounds has played little in the Bears two preseason victories Against Dallas in London he attempted six passes but completed only one McMahon stayed on the sidelines last weekend in Pittsburgh because of a groin injury Meanwhile Di(tka said he is thinking of starting second-year quarterback Mike Tomczak in the Bears first appearance this season at Soldier Field Saturday night against Indianapolis Tomczak completed 17 of 23 passes for 238 yards and three touchdowns Kenny Powers will perform his 'Dynamite T-bone early to tell Ditka said "We need Jim to play 16 games and the playoffs If that means holding nim out now its what we should do McMahon was quoted after last Saturdays game as saying that he and Ditka were not on speaking terms but Ditka disputed the remark "Heres a guy I talk to all the time Ditka said "I ask whats the matter he wont tell me If the whole society is to pout every time you disagree with everybody then forget it My doors open I dont have bars on my windows Though concerned about McMa- Powers with several golden opportunities including 18 stunts in Smoke and the Bandit He has also performed in Hooper Vanishing Point and Bullitt His list of accomplishments is long but perhaps his' most popular stunt came from a scene in The Blues Brothers In that particular stunt Pow-ers craftily drove his car through a shopping mall in an attempt to elude several police enough to know what hes doing After racing cars on dirt tracks as a youngster in South Carolina he got the urge to jump his car over a bus The desire to jump vehicles continued to grow and Powers was soon Bailing over 20 cars with no problem The transition from jumping cars to Hollywood stuntman came natural for Powers The Staff Photo by Gordon Vest in Kingsport Saturday stunts are dangerous but Hal wouldnt ask anybody to do something he wouldnt do himself By his own recognizance Powers has chosen a difficult profession He has had his back broken eight times but an accident while driving down a highway in 1968 cost the 39-vear-old more than any stunt that failed "I had 111 broken bones and 'piUUviUUf 55 necause of a drunken driver said Powers "He hit me from behind and killed five people including himself and my fiancee oeneve rial is tne very best in the business said Powers "He directs a lot now but he realy got me into it I first met him through another friend of mine Sure some who know iormer siuuuimiu actor Hal Needham certainly didnt hurt his chances Though Powers currently works for himself the friendship with Needham netted ers to get out ot tne car and say hello Though it will be a bit dangerous the stunt should be rather1 easy for the 21-year veteran Hes been around long now 323 "Weve given him a weight of 315 to 320 said Ditka who had wanted Perry to drop 'to about 300 pounds "Right how the guys playing as good as anybody we nave oieeieis iubi oauuuay Second-string quarterback Steve Fuller who bruised his elbow during the Pittsburgh game is not expected to play against the Colts "I may start Mike but its too I.
