Johnson Citys only earned run when Reed Olmsiead doubled -Johnson City added a run in Nivens Betsy hold off Tigers By PAGE POWELL Press Sports Writer ELIZABETHTON The Elizabethton Twins have had trouble scoring runs lately The Southern Division leaders had lost three games in a row going into Fridays play and had scored only four runs in those three games But a team with as much offensive firepower as the Twins will not stay down long Sooner or later the runs are going to come and unfortunately for the Bristol Tigers the Twins runs came sooner Elizabethton pounded the Tigers 15-7 at Joe OBrien field Friday and got a good pitching performance from rookie Toby Nivens to maintain a two-game lead over Johnson City in the Southern Division Nivens went nine full innings and gave up 11 hits seven of which came in the sixth inning to get the win "I didnt have my good stuff tonight at all Nivens said "They knew my1 breaking stuff wasnt working and I knew my breaking stuff wasnt working so I was just going at them and challenging them "My fastball was moving both ways It was looking like a slider sometimes and it was looking like a screwball sometimes so I was just staying with that pitch Nivens cruised through the Tiger batting order during the first five innings while his teammates built an eight-run lead Then suddenly and inexplicably everything fell apart Bristol struck for 1 seven runs on seven hits in the sixth inning to cut the Twin lead to one "I just got nickled and dimed to death Nivens said "Every (jasehit they got with the exception of one was off the handle or off the end of the bat I was throwing curveballs and theyd hit them and I was throwing fastballs and theyd hit them too "It was just one of those innings where everything they hit fell in everything Despite the Tigers onslaught Twins manager Fred Waters stayed with Nivens in that rocky sixth inning "They werent hitting him hard and I dont have anybody any better Waters said "You cant get them out when they keep hitting those little flares By DOUG JANZ Press Sports Writer He struggled He didnt always look pretty His pitches to many Kingsport batters were way outside or far inside at the plate And he walked five batters in six innings But Johnson City Cardinal pitcher Mike Henry got' the job done and in baseball thats what cpunts' Henry picked up his second victory against one loss in Appalachian League play as Johnson City defeated the Kingsport Mets 7-2 Friday night It was the eighth straight win for Johnson City 24-20 which remains two games behind Elizabethton in the Southern Division race The Twins also won Friday night Kingsport mired in the Southern Division basement at 1 J-30 will return to Howard Johnson Field tonight for another 7:30 meeting with the Cards Henry a 6-1 right-hander from Lutz Fla had his problems but he managed to bring a one-hit shut-out into the seventh inning when two consecutive solo home runs sent him to the showers But Cardinal manager Dan Radison was 'still proud of him "To his credit for not having his good stuff he pitched great Radison said "His first start in almost a month was five days ago Its very common for pitchers in their second start after a layoff to not have their good stuff Henry bothered by control problems and a knee injury had been pulled from the starting rotation earlier in the season He- hit a run-sconng double to snap a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning and Phil Niekro pitched 2 1-3 hitless innings in his second relief appearance of the year as the Indians won 4-3 the seventh when Kindred singled and eventually scored on a fielders choice throw to second base to tag out Looper: Pena scored in the eighth on a walk a stolen base and two Kingsport errors Kindred was 2-for-5 with two runs and Hewes was 2-for-4 For Kingsport which got its runs on homers by Danny Nsughten and Lorenzo Sisney in the seventh no one had more than one hit and the team accumulated just three Kingsports Rocky Elli relieved Marina in the seventh and gave up four hits and two unearned runs The Cards winning streak said Radison isnt due to any particular aspert of the teams play but to all aspects including a good effort from his bench "Weve had all kinds of injuries he said "But it doesnt matter who I put in they do the job for me $37 Down $38 A Month FRIDAY AND SATURDAY ONLY Dust off the old pool table appears to have earned his way back Greg Becker relieved Henry and pitched three scoreless innings giving up only a walk to pick up the save Mets pitcher Juan Marina a 6-3 right-hander from Puerto Rico also looked good despite taking the loss Marina in fact pitched better than Henry even though the Cards scored five runs in six innings on him But four of those runs were unearned Obviously the Mets had fielding problems "Marina pitched pretty good he didnt really deserve that said a disgusted Chuck Hiller the Mets manager as he made a bee-line toward the parking lot "Hes really only pitched
