BY JAIME CANNICI MANAGING EDITOR WHARTON Ever wonder where all of the mines in Wharton came from? Or even how Whar- ton got its name? Now you can find out thanks to Wharton resi- dents Charlotte Kelly and son, Alan Rowe Kelly, who recently fin- ished a history book for all of Wharton to obtain knowledge, to see photos and to which to relate. a 128-page history book published by Arcadia Press, tells the story of how the town started, grew, and became what it is today. The book dates back from the very beginning of Wharton, which was during the early 17th century. The Lenni Lenape and Delaware Indians settled in the Wharton area. Soon after in the 18th century, this New Jersey area was known to be the of the iron industry.

At a 2.5-mile radius and holding the richest amounts of mineral deposits, this area was originally named Port Oram after its founding father, mining mag- nate and entrepreneur, Robert F. Oram. In 1901, the town had a new businessman in charge due to the high demand of minerals and nat- ural resources. His name was Joseph Wharton. By a petition, the borough changed its name to Wharton, and shortly after their leader helped Wharton become an iron empire.

Through the years, Wharton grew and became a peaceful town of businesses, families and friendly neighbors. Many of families still reside there, which is where Charlotte and Alan retrieved some of their informa- tion, great stories and photos. They also did their research in Morris County libraries, as well as the Wharton Historical Society, where Charlotte has been the President of for three years. The book took Charlotte and Alan a little over a year to com- plete. Approached by Arcadia two years ago, Charlotte did not have time to write a book because of her workload.

When Alan found out about this opportunity, he volun- teered his time and dedicated it to working on the book. Alan said, family and I were all born and raised in Wharton, and I thought it was a great idea to put the legacy on Having four generations of fam- ily themselves living in Wharton, Charlotte and Alan knew a lot about the town and the mines that are in it. Charlotte explained, family worked in the Wharton mines and they used to tell fasci- nating stories. I was always inter- ested in the Alan, 41, a filmmaker whose horror film, Bury You Tomor- was nationally released and will be available soon worldwide, had no experience with writing his- tory books. He said, never did anything like this before.

My favorite part while researching for the book was in general, writing Charlotte was involved and a part of committees in many town clubs and societies throughout the years. She was vice president of the Garden Club, treasurer of the Wharton Library and also involved in the Republican Club Committee. When she finally gave herself time and started the book, she was so happy she did because Charlotte said, really enjoyed doing this book. Not only was it fascinating, but I had a wonderful time work- ing with is available at all bookstores in Morris and Sussex counties, as well as at the Wharton Public Library. Also, Charlotte and Alan will be selling and signing books at Morris Canal Day, on Aug.
