Needing only one victory in its last two games to win the undisputed SEC title, the Tide was upset by Kentucky Saturday and seemed to have lost its season finale to Vanderbilt Monday night trailing 68-66 with six seconds left That's when T.R. Dunn took the inbounds pass, By O'NEIL HENDRICK United Press International Losses in key games over the past three seasons had earned a talented Alabama basketball team the reputation of a "choke team." Defeats in the "big ones" forced the Tide to share the Southeastern ConTerence championship with Vanderbilt in 1975 and Kentucky in 1975. And Alabama appeared to be SPECIAL PURCHASE ff jEWERAL TIRE JJ Niagara-Kentucky game against Kansas State and the winner of the Providence-North Carolina contest opposite Louisville.

Semifinals are scheduled for Thursday night, March 18, with the final set for Sunday afternoon. March 21. North Carolina State, which rejected a bid to appear in the NIT last year after losing in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament, readily accepted this time after being upset in the first round of the ACC tourney by Virginia, the eventual winner. The Wolfpack were ranked among the top 10 early in the season and finished with a 19-8 record. The Woifpack boasts one of the nation's top individual players in sophomore Kenny Carr.

Carr, who has already climbed into 13th place on the school's all-time scoring list, averaged 27.7 points per game during the regular season. It will mark the fourth NIT appearance for North Carolina State but its first since 1951 Kansas State, led by star guard Quickie Williams, finished second to Missouri in the Big Eight Conference while posting a 20-7 record. The Wildcats, who will be making their first NIT appearance, are coached by Jack Hartman, who in 1967 coached Walt Frazier-led Southern Illinois to the NIT title. San Francisco, which lost to NCAA-bound Pepperdine in overtime last Saturday for the West Coast Athletic Conference title, is a freshman-oriented squad that posted a 23-7 record. Coached by Bob Gaillard, the Dons are sparked by 6-foot-7 freshman Winford Boynes, who averaged better than 17 points a game.

San Francisco won the NIT in 1949 under Pete Basketball Steel-Belted Radial Tires Now At Popular Prices! ijlag iliwiiil" 3 Virginia Teams in NCAA Field RICHMOND, Va (UPI) -Don't talk to the "experts" about those three Virginia teams in the 32-team NCAA basketball tournament. They don't want to remember what they said in early December. Virginia Tech? Perhaps. Tough schedule. The NCAA's not going to pick many independents.

William and Mary or Richmond? Maybe. The Southern Conference isn't strong. Virginia Military Institute? Never. Not even in the SC. Virginia? Are you kidding? In the Atlantic Coast Conference? Winning the tournament? C'mon.

But, as incredible as it sounds, three of the state's teams Virginia Tech, VMI and Virginia begin NCAA first round play next Saturday. The only other state with three representatives is California (UCLA, Pepperdine and San Diego State or Pacific). Virginia and VMI play in the East Regional at Charlotte, the Cavaliers (18-11) against De-Paul (19-8) and the Keydets (20-9) against the Southeastern Conference runner-up, either Alabama or Tennessee. Tech (21-6) meets Western Michigan (24-2) in the Mideast Regional at South Bend, Ind. "I've been through some down times here," said Virginia forward Wally Walker, the most valuable player of the ACC tournament, in which the Cavaliers upended 20th-ranked North Carolina State, eighth-ranked Maryland and third-ranked North Carolina.

"We had to overcome our losing image. When we fell behind in the past, we'd say 'Here we go But after we started winning, we knew we could pull it out," said Walker, who scored 73 points in the tournament. VMI coach Bill Blair is confident the Southeastern Conference runner-up will set a faster pace than Richmond did in his club's yawn-inducing 41-33 victory in the SC tournament final. "I have no desire to play like that," he said. "If I thought we could win like that, I'd slow it down.

But I feel we have a good shooting club. "I just want them to go down there and play a good basketball game and not be scared. We have some patience and poise and I hope we show it." The NCAA appearance will be the second for both VMI and Virginia Tech. Ski Jumping Record Set DURANGO, Colo. (UPI) -Paul Hitchcock set a world record by jumping 229 feet during the weekend to win S1.000 and the World Gelande Championship at the Purgatory ski area.

Hitchcock, a Crested Butte, barender, collected 742 points. Hitchcock's jump broke the record jump of 208 feet set in 1972 at Vail, Cpio. Gelande jumping is similar to nordic ski jumping but participants use alpine ski equipment. Taking second place in the meet was Ron Baar, Crested Butte, with a 224 foot jump, followed by Rob Bluemul, Crested Butte, a 219 foot jump. Forty-nine entrants participated in the gelande competition.

The 40,000 Mite Newell. North Carolina at Charlotte will be making its first appearance in Madison Square Garden but the 49ers had a glittering 21-5 record this season on a schedule that was sprinkled with teams from the ACC. SEC, SWC, Ohio Valley and Mid-American conferences. The 49ers boast two exceptionally talented players in 6-9 center Cedric Maxwell, who averaged 12.1 rebounds per game, and forward Lew Mas-sey, who set a school scoring record with 594 points. Holy Cross (21-9) was one of only 12 independents to achieve more than 20 victories this year.

Coached by George Blaney, who himself played in two previous NITs, the Crusaders will be making their eighth NIT appearance. This year's team is sparked by 6-5 forward Michael Vicens of Ponce, Puerto Rico, who averaged 15 points per game. St. Peter's (NJ) is the only team from the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area to be chosen for the NIT this year. The Peacocks (19-10) earned the bid by beating Long Island University last Saturday for third place in the ECAC regional tournament.

The club is led by Bob Fazio, a 6-5 forward who averged 22 points a game. The decision to pass over South Carolina (18-9) was especially surprising, in view of the Gamecocks giving second-ranked Marquette a real battle "on national television Sunday and the team is loaded with New York area players. Frank McGuire, coach of the Gamecocks, also coached previously at St. John's and has enjoyed widespread popularity here. Standings Flaal Mlisaarl Valley Caalereaee ranked Alabama an 84-77 victory at Nashville, Term.

King scored 27 points for the game but big center Leon Douglas had a game-high 30 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out in overtime. The victory gave the Tide the SEC crown with a 15-3 record, one game ahead of Hth-ranked Tennessee, 14-4. "It showed people we weren't a choke team, something we've had the reputation of being railed," said Douglas. "We finally did it." Alabama (22-4) now advances to the NCAA playoffs, meeting sixth-ranked North Carolina in the deadly Mideast Regionals, which also includes top-ranked Indiana and No. 2 Marquette.

Tennessee (21-5), as SEC runnerup, goes to the East Regionals for a first-round meeting with Southern Conference champion VMI. Vanderbilt finished third in the SEC at 12-6 and 16-11 overall, but immediately after its loss to Alabama, coach Roy Skinner announced his resignation. "I've been doing it for 24 years and I'm ready to try something else," said Skinner, who was UPI's SEC Coach of the Year. In other games on the final night of SEC regular-season activity, Kentucky beat Mississippi State in overtime 94-93. Auburn downed Mississippi 10388 and Florida defeated Louisiana State 94-81.

Bartow Is Optimistic LOS ANGELES (UPI) If UCLA's Gene Bartow is nervous about the upcoming NCAA playoffs, it doesn't show. "We're healthy, optimistic and there's no reason why we shouldn't play well," he said Monday. "We're a pretty good basketball team now. We'll just have to play like it every time out. There's no margin for error in the NCAA tournament." In their first season under Bartow, the defending NCAA champions, 23-4, will face Pacific Coast Athletic Association tournament winner San Diego State in a West Regionals first-round game at Eugene, Saturday.

The Bruins whipped the Aztecs 101-86 last December at Pauley Pavilion. "They've got two pro prospects in their forwards, Will Connelly and Steve Copp," Bartow noted. "On a given night, they can beat anyone." But John Wooden's successor sounded cool and confident. "Richard Washington and Marques Johnson have been tremendously consistent down the stretch," he said. "Washington is deserving of every All-America honor he has received.

He is shooting, passing off, rebounding and playing defense as well as any player I've seen in college basketball. "I'm disappointed that Marques hasn't made the All-American teams. He's a super player. "As for the rest of the team, David Greenwood (center) is getting stronger and stronger and gaining more experience. He's improving in all areas.

Our guards have come through, too. "Andre McCarter is still doing a good job of leading us. And our bench, for the most part, has come through. I'd like to especially acknowledge Ralph Drollinger. He's a great guy with a great attitude.

And he's a fine player." WHITEWALLS lAiuiTcuiM i ran the length of the court and fired a 13-foot jump shot that missed. San Francisco and Kansas State, two teams which narrowly missed winning their respective conferences, also received bids along with Holy Cross, St.

Peter's (NJ) and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. The last three were surprise choices as they got the nod over such formidable independents as Florida State (20-6), South Carolina (18-9), Pan American (20-5), North Texas State (22-4) and Oral Roberts (19-6). "The way our luck has been running this year, there were six teams picked and we were probably number seven in consideration," said a disheartened Hugh Durham, coach of Florida State. "I felt our team was as good as the one that went to the finals of the NCAA tournament four years ago," Previously named to compete in the 12-team tournament were Louisville, Kentucky, North Carolina Niagara, Providence and Oregon. Louisville, North Carolina State, Oregon and Kansas State were given first round byes.

Selig said the Brewers opposed such payments. He said baseball players in other cities have also been collecting such off-season compensation. Martin Kestin, state unemployment compensation director, said some professional athletes were eligible for the compensation because they are not guaranteed contracts for the next year even though they earn a minimum annual salary of $16,000. "I believe the state makes the determination (if a ballplayer is eligible for compensa tion)," Selig said. "We have stated our position (of opposition) on this many times to the state.

It very well known to them, but they make the decision, not us. system that needs changing. A lot of things are based on finance and politics and I'm not sure that's right. I'm going to try to change the system. I'm just one person but maybe some people in Kansas City will start listening tome." The Waves scored one of the nation biggest stunners this season when they knocked off Nevada-I-as Vegas 93-91 at Malibu Feb.

hi LOS ANGELES (UPI) -Gary Colson, whose Pepperdine Waves upset University of San Francisco for the West Coast Athletic Conference basketball title, is incensed. He savs it's about time the NCAA basketball playoffs all are held at neutral sites. "And not just the final round of four," he declared Monday. Colson is boiling because the West Regional semifinals and finals will be held at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion next week. The defending national champion Bruins figure to be there.

"It's simply not fair and it's eating at my craw," he said. "What we ought to do is beat Memphis State and then tell the NCAA to forget it. Then maybe they would really pay attention." The Waves, 21-5. will face Metro Six runner up Memphis State in the first round of the West Regionals at Tempe. while UCLA begins defease of its NCAA championship with a first-round game at Eugene, against San Diego State of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association.
