WEDNESDAY, JUNE M, Wtff p o ||y Hctold 131 •—•• County, UWi ' __„ An All American In Two Sports? BROTHERS DON'T very often get a chance to compete in the NCAA Track and Field Champion- Slips, but BYU's brother team of Dennis and Ken Patera will get that opportunity this weekend. They could both score some.points for the Cougars, Everyone Is A Brother At BYL/, Especially Pateras (Bill (The Spoiler) Sialey has already made quite a name for himself on the gridiron at Utah State University. Mentioned on many All American football teams 'las* year, Staley is almost a certain AH American in fre upcoming grid campaign next season, and before he is through he might be an All American in track and field also. Staley qualified for the NCAA meet this year in the shot put and the discus. Hia shot put mark of 564., is probably not good enough for points, but his discus mark of 185-4 might be worth points. Those are his best marks this year, and while only a junior he is almost certain to improve these marks before winding up an excellent collegiate athletic career. All American rating is given to any athlete that finishes in the top three in any event in the NCAA meet. Staley might turn the trick in the discus this yes*. He is a tackle on the Utah State football team and has ai- ready been selected on the 1967 Playboy All American team. He gives up spring football practice to concentrate on the shot put and discus, and Aggte Coach Ralph Maughan is certain that if the fine athlete would concentrate full time on his track specialties that he would be one of the world* best. Staley has broken aty VSO weight records held by Ail American Ix J. Silvester. It's not very often that an NCAA Track and Field Championship will list two brothers on the entry list, but it's so this year. Ken and Dennis Patera, both seniors at Brigham Young University, will be climaxing their college careers by participating in the NOAA Meet at their home campus in Provo. On the BYU campus, a church owned school, everyone is called "brother" anyway, but for Ken and Dennis it is literal. Ken will be entered in three events, and there are but a handful of athletes who have qualified in three events. Dennis will be entered in one event. Ken has qualified in the hammer, shot put, and discus, and Dennis will 'be entered in the discus. Neither is exepected to win first place-in their events, but both are potential point winners for the Cougars. Dennis has twirled the platter 177-10, seven inches farther than his brother Ken. They will probably both have to be out more than 100 feet if they expect to score points in this event. Ken Patera is the NCAA indoor shot put champion and is one of only four men in this year's meet to have bettered the GOnfoot standard. His best distance has been 6MO J /4. Only world record holder Randy Matson from Texas A&M and Neal Steinhauer of Oregon have tossed the steel ball any farther than that , • Ken is likely to win a tirird place in the shot put event. In the hammer throw Ken Is the BYU Stadium record holder, but his mark is not expected to stand through this exciting meet. His best toss this year is 180-3%, but is some 20 feet short of the mark established by Robert Narcessian of Rhode Island. He has twirled the baH and chain beyond the 200 foot mark. Undoubtedly the Pateras arc the best brother combination in the weight events in the country. . . . . , THE FUN WAY TO GET THERE! Rent A HONDA HONDA * World Leader!!
