12th While Coach Shug Jordan told yelling dancing students who staged rip-snorting celebration at news of the championship that "as far as I'm concerned Auburn Noor By JACK BICKHAM Pondering this and thatwhile wondering whatever happened to Oklahoma State Easily qualified as the hard-luck guy on the Sooner football team this year is Gary Baer 180-pound speedster from Salina Kan A sophomore Baer injured his knee in two-a-day practices this fall and missed almost all the vital double workouts which are doubly necessary for a newcomer trying to absorb the OU system and make a place for himself on the varsity roster Baer got back into action in time to shine In one preseason scrimmage'whon his speed let him catch a fellow track man halfback Johnny Fellow from behind on a long run But he had missed too much to be any big factor in OU planning Still he stuck with it But In the week before the Notre Dame game he reinjured the kg and finally had to undergo surgery for removal of torn cartilage last week But he was on the sidelines on crutches for the OSU game Saturday and says firmly he'll be back next season He'll get to make the trip to the Orange Bowl along with every member of the varsity squad Those not picked for the traveling team will get a free ride down for the fun and to watch the game Two weeks ago a lot was made of the fact that OU Equipment Manager Jack Baer took mud cleats long underwear and foul weather gear to Lincoln for the Nebraska game But all this stuff is standard equipment for any game no matter what's expected "You have to take everything" Baer explains "You can't take any chances on getting away from home and having the weather change without your being fully prepared for it" Norman high's Chet Bryan sometinies criticized for his demanding attitude toward his players but always rated one of the best basketball-baselmil coaches In the state has some additional proof that his systein doesn't hurt anyone Tommy Feuerborn a former Tiger who played under Bryan is now with the Army in Korea He's gotten homesick and maybe a trifle disgusted lately but he wrote his mother Mrs William Feuer-born 215 Dale St: "I learned a long time ago from a game called football and a man named Chet Bryan that if you like the team you're playing with and like the game you stick it out and give it all you've got" OU's Doyle Parrackcontinues to make friends for himself and the University around the state A fan in Lawton said the other day 'I watched the coaches from state colleges during the regional basketball tournament here last year Parrack was the only one who was here and in his seat for all the games While the others were out talking it over at the nearest pub Parrack was watching every minute of action talking to people who knew the kids and missing nothing Ile can't help but produce a winner working like that" fl Ii 00 Basketball Season Begins Upsets Start at Same Time By JACK BICKHAM The University of Oklahoma faster on offense tougher on defense surprisingly placid under the boards and shooting poorly took a scrappy Arkansas quintet In stride here Monday night by a score of 64-52 Although they could hit but 297 per cent from the field the Sooners held 15-20-point leads through much of the second half and finished with a second team in action Forward Don Schwa II paced all scorers with 17 points 13 of them in the first half But the OU balance was among the bright spots as Joe King Gene Hudson and Dennis Price each tallied 12 Bruce Medley Coach Doyle Parrack's sixth man scored 7 The only starter to fall short of expectations was center Bob Stoermer who tallied but two points But Stoermer was usually in the middle of Arkansas' collapsing zone defense and got few opportunitieS Ball Moved Well The Sooners moved the ball around the 'zone well and got plenty of fine inclose shots It they had been hitting at even an average clip they could have chased the Porkers clear out of the field house The Porkers on the other hand had a rough time getting within 20 feet of the Sooner goal as Parrack's man-for-man defense looked excellent Led by Price and Medley OU scored 11 interceptions and cashed most of the steals on a crowd-pleasing fast break: Oklahoma showed just about 1 everything but the expected rebounding and shooting ability From the field they simply were cold missing many opportunities after good passing had moved the ball within point-blank range Out-rebounded 52-43 they looked erratic in this department one of their stronger features a season ago 1496 0 elLe'' -) tilt 1 Could You Replace
