Brazosport and Brazoria County, Monday November 5,1956 Krumrey Passes Net Ship BRAZOSP'RT FACTS A crowd of sonic 2,400, including the "Dad's Night" group, braved Texas' first real cold snap last Friday night to watch the Brazosport Exporters fight off the spunky Spring Branch Bears and coine out with a close 13-8 District 12-AAAA victory. The Shipper win gives them a 2-1 mark in conference play and sends them up against Baytown's state-rated Ganders this week in the.next to last league battle. Bayiown, loser of only one game this year, a close 7-6 loss to Ray of Corpus Christi, spanked Galena Park last week 37-12 io keep pace with Pasadena in the league standings. Both the Eagles and Ganders are undefeated in 12-AAAA play and both are among the top AAAA teams across the state in most ratings. The Exporters are the only team that are now given any chance to challenge the Ganders or Eagles for the title flag.

Pasadena has already tripped the Exporters 28-0 but the Birds must still face Baytown. Last week coach Kenneth Wilson had to go the bench to pull the game out with the so- called weak Spring Branch Bears. The Exporters, apparently their minds on the upcoming game with Baytown, had to fight off fumbles, cold and the Bruins to pull out a win last Friday. Wilson's Exporters had been lagged to run up a large score on the Bruins, who have yet to win a conference game and only one season skirmish, but the SP eleven came to play. The Exporters suffered a severe blow, and probably a bad kick in the remaining two games, when senior quaterback David Frank injured his ankle in the first three minutes.

With Frank out Wilson went io the bench and brought up Doyle Krumrey, who iruned in i first full-action game as a varsity player and did a fine job. Krumrey handled the quarterback reins until the closing minutes when Bob Walker took over and looked as he too, had the Ships headed for a TD until the final whistle stopped him. Spring Branch won the coin toss and took the north end and while the Exporter co-captnins Dennis Roberts and Bobby Woodruff took the kiekoff on the south end. After the kickoff, from the 14, the Exporters fumbled on the first play and Spring Branch came up with the ball. The Bruin drove to the five with one more down left to make a first.

The Exporter defense of Leo Wleczyk, Marshall Roberson, Bucky Epps, James Nixon, Carl Rogers, Pat Tumlinson, Bill Next As Brazospcrt Bruins 13-8 in Cold STARTING TUESDAY 9:30 A SURE WINNER ON EVERY BALLOT! Prude, Jimmy Allred, Johnny Henderson and others dug i and held oft the fourth down try from the five and took over on downs. With Veryl Cutshall and Tommy Lowe heading the attack the Ships moved for one first down before having to punt. Punts and fumbles were the bulk of the activity in the opening quarter as only SB was able to get any drives started. The Bears drove to the Exporter seven before a last dow fumble rolled back to the 23 when the "Big Red" took over. Early in the second quarter the Exporters Roberson went back io kick from the 17.

The ball was too tall and Roberson had to run over the goal to cover and thus gave SB their two points. The clubs exchanged punts and fumbles during the second quarter until the late minutes when Prude and Tumlinson picked up a Bear miscue on the 21, setting up a Exporter first down, and thus giving them their first real break of the game. Krumrey passed to Cutshall for seven yards and Woodruff added three on a line play for a first on the 11. From there Krumrey hit Cutshall with a touchdown pass that had the Bear deep-men fooled from the snap-back. Roberson's extra point fry was blocked and the Shippers left at halfiime with a 6-2 margin.

Wilson's Exporters came back strong in the third period and added their second marker. SB took the kickoff and failed to go and had to punt to the Shippers on the 42. In six plays the locals moved 58 yards for the score. Lowe, Roberts and Cutshall moved the ball to the Bears 36 for a first down Then Krumrey went back to pass The junior QB found Cutshall wide open on the right side and hit him with the short pass. The rest was up io Cutshall and the swift halfback turned in a fine job of running.

Roberson got the extra point down and the Exporters had their 13 points. Late in the third period the Exporters picked up a Bear fum ble and moved to the SB 28 before a pass backfired and Spring Branch once again took over the ball. Early in the final period the Bears went to the air and a toss from quarterback Jimmy Kruetz to Johnny Lewis netted 37. yards and set up a first down on the Exporter 18. On the next play the Bruins fumbled and Prude and Wleczyk were there to recovered and halt the drive.

The Shippers failed to move and had to kick to the Bears on Ship 41. From there the visitors moved for a score in five playi. A 32-yard fourth down pass from Krueti to Lewis set up a first on the six and set the stage for the score. On the next play Kruetz found Lewis open and the Bears had their first and only score. The point was no good and the score stood 13-8.

With Walker at the quarterback role the Exporters moved to the 16 after th'c kickoff and looked as if they might add another score until the clock caught them. In all, it was thepassing of Krumrey Io Cuirtll that brought the Ex peters two scores and gave their game with Spring Iranch. The Exporter urned in a fine game but hadlois of trouble from the Bearace halfback Jimmy Brents. Spring Branch icked up 154 yards on the grond while the Ships had 147 andonly nine first downs to SB's 13. The Cats face LaPorte this week in the closing home game and then travel to Deer Park on Nov. 16 for the last 1956 contest. Pitts was hurt in the game as he got three ribs cracked and will be out the rest of the season while Whitman broke a leg in practice last week and will be lost the last two games. Angleton opened up the Gator scoring when Billy Joe Pursley cracked through the line for a five yard gain and a TD. Pursley added the point to give Angleton a 7-0. margin at the end of the first quarter. Pursley again smashed home from five-yards out in the second quarter but missed the point giving the Cats a 13-0 margin.

The Gators came back with a 40 yard pass from Tommy Stewart to Irwin Hardwick to some in the second quarter thus making the count 13-6 at. Hamrick's Cats roared back in the third quarter and punched across a pair of TDs to break the game wide open. With Curtis Mayo at the quarterback slot the Angleton offense, started rolling and was never headed. The first score was tacked up )y Mayo himself In the third pciod from two yards out.

Jamei Harvey added the point and the Cats were ahead 20-6. Later in the third quarter Albert Foste scampered 20 yards for a TD aid then added the point making ths count 27-6.
