PAGE 4 THE WACO CITIZEN TUESDAY, JUNE 26,1979 By Edward Fadal Out Loud. Citizen Newspaper Sports Editor Sprowl Now With Astros acoan Scholarship THE TRUE POWER OP PUBLIC RELATIONS can best bt described by only one word: Results. Just ask Baylor football assistant coaches. Corky Nelson, John O'Hara and Billy Mills. But let us go back to Baylor's 1978 Spring drills.

BAYLOR COACHES EXTENDED A WARM INVITATION across the border to football coaches and players alike at the Institute of the Cheyennes in Mexico City to attend and observe spring practice at Baylor Stadium. Word had reached Head Coach Grant TeafTthat the Mexican Institute was interested in learning more about the American game of football, Baylor Bear fashion, per se. The 'invite' went out immediately and was accepted almost instantaneously. IN RETURN, MEXICAN AUTHORITIES AT THE STITUTE invited Baylor coaches to go to Mexico City to instruct players and coaches on their home fle'd. To say the least, the experience was Nelson, O'Hara and Mills.

The Baylor coaching trio has just returned from Mexico City where they coached and instructed Mexican coaches and players in the various intricacies of the Baylor system. Football coaches at the Folytechnical Institute of the Cheyennes in Mexico City had been impressed with 1974 season and Grant TeafTs book, Believe." They decided to witness spring practice two years ago. They returned to Mexico City, implemented the Baylor system and had succew. THE MEXICAN COACHES WERE INVITED TO RETURN TO Waco and observe spring practice again this year. Six coaches responded to the invitation along with 20 players.

"Their players were really impressed with the speed, quickness and size of our athletes at Baylor," Nelson said. The coaches at the Institute are non-professional and hold Other jobs. They have adopted American procedures and techniques such as Aiming or videotaping their practice sessions and ball games. And at the end of the year, an all-star game is staged. The contest drew 100,000 people in Mexico City last year.

Even more interest is anticipated this year. NELSON SAID THE CHARM AND FRIENDLINESS of the Mexican coaches was overwhelming. "They took us into their homes like family; took us sightseeing and personally saw to it that we were treated royally. They do enough for us," Nelson continued. "Their affection for us didn't end with a hand shake but with a warm embrace." ASKED HIS OBSERVATION AND APPRAISAL of the Mexican players in comparison to American athletes, Nelson said.

tough kids and hit. They try real hard. Their attitude and demeanor be any UNIFORMS WORN BY THE TEAMS are identical with American football gear. All of their equipment is purchased at Waco's BAB Sporting Goods. "They told their players they will win at least six ball games this year after winning only three games last year," Nelson said.

WERE IMPRESSED WITH THE ATTITUDE of the players and their attitude toward their coaches," Nelson tinued. "They also happy that we. as coaches, responded to them." While the Mexican staff was here, Cjoach Teaff had to leave for a speaking engagement and clinic in and invited the Mexican coaches to go along with on the Baylor plane. They accepted and were most impressed with clinic, speaking and motivational techniques. MUCH SO, THEY WENT ALL-OUT to show us every courtesy and kindness when we were there." Nelson concluded.

THE POWER OF PUBLIC RELATIONS IS STILL very much alive. Thanks to coaches Nelson. and Mills, at last a giant step has been taken to cement relations with our border neighbors.
