Hazleton Standard Speaker, Friday, April 30, 1993 1 5 Lady Cougars, Lady Vikings lose in WVC Freshman Kate Orloski struck out 13 batters and allowed just two hits Thursday afternoon to lead Crestwood past Hazleton Area, 8-1, in Wyoming Valley Conference Class AAA Softball play. In a AA matchup, Meyers beat Bishop Hafey, 10-2. CRESTWOOD HAZLETON AREA 8 1 The Lady Cougars held a 1-0 lead after 2 Vi innings when Heidi Rittenhouse scored from third base on a passed ball, but that was the only highlight in the contest for Hazleton Area as the Lady Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the third to take control. Crestwood scored its runs on an Orloski leadoff single followed by a hit batsman. A passed ball advanced the runners before Laura Phelan stroked a two-run double prior followed by Kim Hollock's RBI single.

The Lady Comets scored an unearned run in the fourth and secured the outcome with four tallies in the bottom of the sixth. Hollock paced the winners with three singles followed by Phelan's double and single. Orloski added two singles and Kristin Kirkutis singled. Chrissy Swank and Kim Mistiszyn singled for the Lady Cougars. Hazleton Area dropped to 3-4, 1-3, and will host Nanticoke Monday.

COUGARS HONORED The Hazleton Area High School basketball team was honored Thursday by the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce during a Red Carpet Breakfast at Genettl's Best Western Hall of Presidents. Hazleton Area's final triumph in the field events came from Joe Galada, who won the pole vault (12-0).

Jake Reiff captured the 110-meter low hurdles in 16.3 and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 43.1 while Veazie won the 100 (11.2) and 200 (23.1) meter dashes. Eric Marsch won the run Scott took the 400-meter dash (54.6) and Jeff Krulick finished first (10:58) in the run. Second-place points were contributed by Scott, 100-meter dash (11.5) and javelin (125-9); John Kuczynski, 1,600 (4:59.5) and 800 (2:19.7) meter runs; Evangelista, 200-meter dash (24.2); Jeff Bradbury, run Mike Gau-diano, shot put (39-9 Vi); Keith Bolish, discus (105-1O); Brown, high jump (5-8); and Jamie Dixon, pole vault (12-0). MEYERS BISHOP HAFEY 10 2 Amy Rosengrant was the winning pitcher and also the hitting star for the Lady Mohawks as she collected four singles and drove in four runs for the winning Lady Mohawks. Bishop Hafey trailed 8-0 before scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth. Traci Smith contributed a double and single to the winning offense followed by Carrie Kelsch, Danielle Benson and Jamie Miller all with two singles. Lynn Milewski doubled and Becky Brominski, Tammy Phillips and Karen Ostrowski each had a single.

The Lady Vikings were led by Debbie Leonard's three singles and Nicole Evans triple and single. Rose Petruzzi chipped in with an RBI double and Leslie Evans, Amanda Hanincik and Mae Umbriac each contributed a single. Rosengrant was the winning pitcher and Leonard was tagged with the loss. After the Vikings went ahead 4-3 in the fourth, the Titans tied the score with a run in the bottom of the stanza and then broke the deadlock with two runs in the fifth.

Brian Strish walked and Jack Washko doubled before Holena drove in the go-ahead runs with a double. Washko paced the winners with a pair of doubles followed by Holena's double and single. Freshman Lee Tripp contributed a double. Dudeck and Harris each collected a double and single for the Vikings while Frank DeFalco and Merrigan both had two singles. Ciavarella and Jason Lagowy singled.

Penn State cage camp planned for June, July The 11th annual Penn State Basketball School will be held with three different sessions planned for June and July at the Penn State-Hazleton gymnasium. The camp is open to all boys and girls in fifth through 10th grades. The first session, for girls, will be held the week of June 21-25.

Two sessions for boys will be held. The first session for boys will be held June 28 to July 2 and the second boys' session will be held July 12-16. GIRLS HAZLETON AREA 133 LAKE-LEHMAN 7 The Lady Cougars won all 17 events against the out-manned Lady Black Knights. Hazleton Area displayed balance throughout the race as Lynn Ritz showed her form in taking the 100-meter (16.6) and 300-meter (50.5) hurdles while Gcnine Darrough was a triple winner as she claimed the 100 (12.8) and 200 (27.6) meter dashes before joining with Christine Koren, Stephanie Benn-inger and Rachel Ritz to win the 400-meter relay in 52.9. Jamie Hospador, Gina Barletta, Tracy Witkowski and Meredith Marko combined to run a 12:13.4 and win the relay. Marko claimed the run in 13:31 and Barletta took the 800-meter run in 2:56.9. Tawnya Zucatti captured the run in 6:40.1 and Cindy Pacelli took the 400-meter dash in 1:00.5.

Kimberly Mollath, Renee Eckert, Melissa Costell and Barletta won the relay in 5:02. Erin Costell won the triple jump with a 31-8 and Koren took the long jump with a 15-7. Jennifer Fellin captured the high jump with a 4-6 and Mrazik finished first in the shot put with a 31-0 followed by Kathy Babula's victory (91-10) in the discus and Renee Eckert's win (95-10) in the javelin. HAZLETON AREA HANOVER AREA 85 Vi 55 Vi The Lady Cougars used superior depth in overcoming the Lady Hawkeyes, who won nine of the 17 events, but could not match Hazleton Area in second and third place points. Darrough claimed three first-place finishes with wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes along with running a leg of the vctorious 400-meter relay while the team of Hospador, Barletta, Witkowski and Marko won the relay.

Heather Radjavitch homered for the Lady Wreckers, Mandy O'Donnell doubled and Fran Keener, Vicky Pilecki and Stephanie Malisko singled.

The Lady Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a single by Klimas and back-to-back doubles by Crea and Rob-bins. Radjavitch's home run cut the deficit in half in the top of the first, but Cardinal Brennan scored three runs in the bottom of the second on a pair of walks, an error, a fielder's choice and a single. The Lady Chargers scored a run in the third on Kowalonek's single and Klimas' triple. The Lady Wreckers scored twice in the fourth. Pilecki singled, stole second and took third when O'Donnell reached on an error.

O'Donnell stole second base before Missy Labanoski put down a sacrifice bunt to score Pilecki. O'Donnell also scored on the play on a throwing error. Weatherly scored a run in the sixth when Pilecki singled, stole second and scored on O'Don-nell's double. Weatherly will host Panther Valley today. Church "Where Courtesy Quality Dayne MacAfee led a dominating showing in the field events with three victories Thursday afternoon to lead Hazleton Area past Hanover Area, 111-39, and Lake-Lehman, 100-50, in Wyoming Valley Conference track and field at Harman-Geist Stadium. In girls' action, the Lady Cougars beat Lake-Lehman, 133-7, and Hanover Area, 8512-5512.

BOYS HAZLETON AREA 111 HANOVER AREA 39 MacAfee helped the Cougars finish first in six of the seven field events as he captured the shot put (44-0), discus (114-3) and javelin (149-2) while Joe Longo added a pair of wins in the long (19-8) and triple (41-4 Vi) jumps before Blue Devils lose in 9th Minersville scored two runs in the top of the ninth to hand Shenandoah a 5-3 defeat in Schuylkill League Division II baseball. The teams were tied 3-3 after seven innings before the Battlin' Miners finally broke the tie in the top of the ninth as Scott Gehris walked and was forced out at second before Mitch Ritchie came through with a single. Cory Riz-zardi walked to load the bases and then Norb Brennan hit a scarifice fly to center for one run. Tom Wenner then hit an RBI single to cap the rally. Shenandoah scored twice in the third on a Brian Racis two-run double and tied the score at 3-3 in the sixth on a Jeff Maksimik RBI single.

Wenner paced the winners with a double and two singles followed by Rizzardi's double and single. Dave Zula pitched in with a double while Ritchie, Brennan, Jeff Cutler and Matt Leonard all added a single. The Blue Devils were led by Racis' double and single and Maksimik, Joe Link and Paul Sosna all with two singles. John Katulis, Gregg Mirocke, Chris Jones and Rich Yarnitsky each contributed one single. Curt Sinko was the winning pitcher with 10 strikeouts and Mirocke suffered the defeat.
