I -v-- r- 4 fc'VWAW''VfW i 41 I 4 i i- rijpo yIZ5 L-J uEUU A VOLUME LI No 77 KINGSPORT TENNESSEE TUESDAY APRIL 19 1968 18 PAGES FIVE CENTS PLANS PILGRIMAGE TO BORDER jnooker os Road Gaps Here Politics? Democratic primary candidate John Hooker Jr launched the 1966 gubernatorial campaign in Kingsport today with a free-wheeling attack on stalled area highways Hooker told the Cosmpolitan Kiwanis Club at a noon luncheon he intended to go take a look at the Virginia end of Interstate 81 before con ture that can be ours with a modern highway program Why has Interstate 81 been postponed in Tennessee for so long? Who knows what politics are involved? Who can say what pressures are at work to delay highway construction? Who can say what political leaders seek to gain because of our states delays? For over a decade our road program has been controlled by patch -it -up promise-it-later put-it-off politics The road program of this states leadership in the past has led to a dead end I am told that Virginia has already completed 286 of its 325 miles of Interstate 81 Tennessee has completed none-zero Not one inch of Interstate 81 has been built in Tennesee I understand that not before 1972 will the people of Kingsport be able to travel to Knoxville on this vital highway which was first available to us in 1961 From 1961 through 1972 how many families in Kings port will be spared the threat of tragedy from injury or even death to a kinsman or a tinuing bis campaign swing Over in Virginia there is a highway completed and being traveled he said attracting industry and tourists helping fanners and providing access for the people of that state to each other But on the Tennessee side there is no sign of preparation or progress no indication that this state is looking to the fu friend on Highway 11-W? I am not interested in the old-fashioned political dealings which perpetuate this terrible hazard to the lives of our people and the commerce in Tennessee Its time in Tennessee to move this state forward over highways that will lead us to a future that competes with other states with Virginia North Carolina and Kentucky in every phase of government service in road-building in education in attracting industry and in helping the farmer Tennessees future lies down highways not yet built I intend to see that they are constructed that they are neither a dream nor a nightmare but a reality Quang and other Buddhist leaders who had extracted from Ky a promise for elections to be held in three to five months Kys pledge was accepted by the Buddhist leaders and students in Saigon but students and dissident soldiers in the northern provinces especially in the cities of Da Nang and Hqe continued to demand the immediate resignation of the military junta On Monday Tri Quang went north
