Clubs By JOHN BARRINGTON INS Sports Editor NEW YORK INS Maybe major league ctubowners are getting smart at last about bonus players There has been a notable abatement in the atoning of such young prospects none at all in the American League since the start of the present season and only three In the National That doesn't mean that the scouts haven't been as busy as eer But the kids have been assigned to minor league affiliates which means they have received less than the $4000 inducement that marks them as bonus players tinder the major league rule There are several obvious rea-aons for the waning enthusiasm of big league clubs once ready to offer skys-the-llmit bonuses to green kids and carry them on the roster for two years as virtual deadwood For one thing the cost of the gamble has proved too great in relation to the number of outstanding plavers produced by the system Moreover It destroyed the confidence pnd blighted the careers of promising youngsters by tossing them tn over their heads: and It deprived the minor leagues of the services of kids who would have been useful to them The clampdown was motivated too bv the fact that the returned serviceman classification is about to become extinct While ex-servicemen could be carried for a year without counting on the roster most clubs could make room for a couple of bonus boy But most of the former GIs have used up their free time and every spot on the roster must be reserved for a productive ahlete Most club executives apparently agree with general manager George Weiss-of the New York Yankees who said: "Unless some real 'genius shows up able to move right into our lineup Instead of sitting on the bench a couple of years you will not see another bonus player with the Yankees" Weiss speaks from sorry experience The Yankees have one bonus lad infielder Tommy Carroll signed out of Notre Dame for a reported $60000 who has done little except for scattered pineh-run-ting chores Another Yankee gamble big first escker Frank Leja was farmed to Richmond In the International League this spring having completed his two years of compulsory apprenticeship on the Yankee bench He wasn't even ready for Triple A being subsequently dropped to Binghamton in Class A and then a notch lower to Winston-Salem This year the Chicago Cubs have opened their pocketbooks twice-outbidding other teams for Moe Drabowen a Trinity College pitcher and Gerry Kindall University of Minnesota shortstop for a reported $60000 and $50000 respectively Cincinnati signed outfielder Don Paveletick of Milwaukee Otherwise there just hasnt been any bonus bonanza The kids have to start at the bottom 'Bud' Smith To Risk Title Friday Night By MURRAY ROSE The Associaed Press Lightweight champion Wallace "Bud" Smith beaten
