make the scene described here come true were asked to compare the task before them with some previous spisode in history One suggested a parallel between the earth satellite effort and Christopher Columbus voyage into the unknown Another rocket man felt the project resembled what the Wright Brothers did at Kitty Hawk in 1903 There from Kill Devil Hill man after centuries of earth-bound existence threw off the -shackles of gravity for a few precious seconds A third scientist compared the satellite program to the development of the first atomic bomb Paul Walsh the slim crew-cut engineer who Vhs day-to-day responsibility for prefect vanguard says it is like all these things rolled into one the bomb Columbus Wright Brothers But there is another element Walsh adds He recalled the 1932 World Series the 8 w'ould get at least one earth satellite into orbit sometime during International Geophysical Year July I 1957 to December 31 1958 That meant we have to knock one out of the park or look pretty bad Another vanguard man broke in: The situation is really different Ruth was a home run hitter: if he had never before hit a ball out of the infield and then pointed to the Vanguard are described in the series that starts today By EDWIN DIAMOND' International News Service Science Writer CAPE CANAVERAL Fla (INS) -Its shortly before 8 on a lush warm evening in late 1957 or early in 1958 The suns last rays lighten the sky to the west but overhead the first stars gleam whitely against the blue-black velvet background of the clear still Florida sky To the east over the Atlantic night has come Across a sandy hook of land a loudspeaker voice booms out: Coming up on X-minus-ten-mlnutes Mark X-minus-ten-niinutes The stage is set for mans first step into space at Cape Canaveral Fla At 'X-minus-ten-minutes being the mathematical symbol for the unknown quantity in an equa ticn and therefore used by rocket men as the undetermined time of launching the center of attraction comes alive Electric power and then hydraulic power are turned on in the long pencil-slim rocket which stands seven stories tall and is pointed skyward Nestled inside its silver nose is the medicine ball sized sphere that will soon become mankinds first artificial space satellite if all goes well Four giant searchlights bathe the poised rocket in light 1 The rocket stands alone on its concrete launching pad The hu-man-Tiands that fashioned it that still control it through the thick Instrument cable strand running up its side into the electronic maze within are safely behind 14-inch By EDWIN DIAMOND INS Science Writer An electronic computing machine named Maniac has been taught to play beginners chess on its own and cabably enough to give its human opponents a good tussle In three matches promoted by a team of top mathematical physicists at Los Alamos scientific laboratory Maniac first played a practice game with Itself and then took on a Princeton professor The electronic computer favorably handicapped almost earned a draw before the Princeton man pulled a mate trap and took Maniacs' queen In its last game Maniac beat a human beginner who had one week's chess experience The games all have a serious scientific purpose While no one will say that machines can really think It is acknowledged that Maniacs chess game represents something akin to human thought As such the man vs Maniac matches are an exciting new approach to one of mankinds most difficult and fundamental questions: What happens in the human brain during thinking or more simply what is the process we call thought? At present brain researchers know that the sense organs in the eye ear nose and skin send information to the brain via streams of nerve impulses These impulses are like electrical currents They serve to activate appropriate nerve cells which in turn send electric-like Impulses to the neurone circuits But how does the brain convert these impulses into thought? Dr Wilder Penfield director of the Montreal Neurological Institute and one of the worlds truly great brain authorities confesses that science Just doesn't know He suggests new approaches are needed The chess-playing maniac may be such an approach Chess is the" brainiest of all games Maniac is the electronic computer whose calculations helped demonstrate the feasibility of the hydrogen bomb Maniac can add subtract multiply and divide It can perform such decisions as whether a given cumber is larger smaller or equal to a second given number Its electronic elements behave in much the same manner as the bodys nerve centers do in the transmission of electric impulses Dr Stan Ulam Los Alamos mathematical physicist chess player and one of maniacs managers wanted to see what he could learn about chess computers and the human brain by bringing all three together He and his colleagues taught maniac chess based on two general principles of play (known to the chess player as the principle of material advantage and the principle of superior mobility) A set of coded instructions enabling maniac to play chess using Just these two principles was fed into the machine The board cho sen foi maniacs game was pared from the standard 64 squares to 36 squares Maniac was able to plan ahead four moves two by each player thanks to the Instructions Before It made a move it was able to weigh all legally allowed move sequences or chains and finally select the one chain that squared best with its two principles of play According to Dr Ulam the matches revealed several amusing features Among them: At the turning point of its game with Prof Martin Kruskal of Princeton described as a strong player mamac in eminently human fashion deliberated 20 minutes before giving up its queen In its third game against a human beginning in which the machine was victorious maniac handled the final attack most ITS AN EXCELLENT IDEA FOR YOUR SUNDAY DINING PLEASURE!
