HERBERT CHESHIRE -KNOXVILLE Tenn (UP) Quarterback Jackie Parker a Knoxville boy passed up by Tennessee because he was married came home with an enemy team Saturday and ed Mississippi State to a 26-0 victory over the Vols before 15000 unhappy fans The loss marred the debut of Tennessee Coach Harvey Robinson as successor to ailing Gen Bob Neyland who since 1928 had built up the best won and lost record in football history It was also Tennessees worst loss since 1947 Out For Record Parker a spindle-legged rubber armed senior scored two touchdowns himself passed for a third and made two extra points to get started on a try to break his own Southeastern Conference scoring record of 120 points Tennessee recruiters had passed up Parkfer when he graduated from Knoxville High School because of Streak By LOWRY BOWMAN GAINESVILLE Fla (UP) Floridas fighting Gators completely at home on a swampy field fought Georgia Tech to a scoreless tie Saturday to snap an 18-game win streak but the Jackets did manage to slog through their 28th game without a defeat Three times Techs touted breakaway backfield slipped and slid to within a few Inches of the Florida goal line and twice more moved inside the 20 only to lose the ball Hardeman Fumbles Three disastrous fumbles by star halfback Leon Hardeman one of them almost on the Florida goal and heroic end-z punting by Army-destined Rick Clares sophomores slashed a highly touted Kentucky defense Saturday for two touchdowns that started Ole Miss to a 22-6 win over the Wildcats Rookie Eagle Day quarterback and fullback Bobby (Slick) Mc-Cool knifed through the tight Kentucky defense for touchdowns in the second and third periods to push Mississippi ahead In its first Southeastern Conference game this season Another sophomore Houston Patton added a third TD in the final quarter A safety against Kentucky completed the scoring McCool a 195-pound powerhouse was the Ole Miss gun who found the knack of rupturing the Wildcat line at will after passes failed against the Kentuckians On the other side of the picture big Steve Meilinger who played at end halfback fullback and quarterback for Kentucky was dogged by a swarm of Mississippi linemen the entire game Ole Miss started the first period in a slam-bang drive that carried all the way to the Kentucky two On the next play Day did a neat bit of ball handling and McCool stepped over for what appeared to be a touchdown But a penalty killed the score and Kentuckys defense stiffened In the second period Kentucky quarterback Dick Shatto held the spotlight tor a time with his short bullet passes About midway in the second period he connected with one to A1 Zam-plno on the goal line that pushed Kentucky ahead 6-0 Don Netos-ki missed the point and Kentuckys scoring was through In the waning minutes of the first half Pete Mangum made (See REBELS Page 4-D) Story Behind Southerns Surprise IOWA CITY la (A5) Michigan State the proud national champion of 1952 got a rugged test from Iowa Saturday before the Spartans broke away for a 21-7 victory in their Western Conference football debut after an anxious 4-year wait Michigan State a 14-point favorite finished exactly with that margin in a unable-marked opener for both teams The triumph upped Michigan States winning streak to 25 games since the Spartans lost to Maryland 34-7 in the third game of the 1950 season The Spartans always quick opportunists snapped up the potentialities of an Iowa fumble and a pass interception for a 14-0 lead in' the first quarter They didnt meander far out of their own territory after that for two full periods Meawbile Iowa lost a scoring a field goal and rolled on to ruin the -1953 bow of the Gophers and their all-America halfback Paul Giel The 17-7 victory was USCs second of the YORK (JP) Handicap Champion Tom Fool turned the $54500 Sysonby Mile into a personal romp Saturday as he breezed home an easy winner over two outclassed rivals at Belmont Park Earlier Mrs' George everyone but itself by upending Alabama 2519 a few days ago it was time to Investigate this happening A letter to Hattiesburg Miss brought back a load of letters filled with reasons It seems as if the Southerners are really loaded for bear This school who was called Hattiesburg Teachers a few years ago may have an enrollment of only 2000-plus but it has a tremendous 48-man football squad If it hadnt been for Kingsports Jack Fulkerson who gained stardom at Southern last season as a senior linesman its doubt-ful whether many local fans would have heard of the school A rumor unconfirmed has it that an oil millionaire is backing the club with his pocketbook This millionaire used to do the same thing at another Mississippi school but when that institution made him angry over a minor detail he began searching for a new place to spread his bills around And Southern was the lucky school Guys like Bucky McElroy and Laurin Pepper the most formidable one-two punch in small-college football were gathered in by an expanding recruiting system Hattiesburg citizens swear by these two men in fact theyve grown lyrical about this pair McElroy is the bulldozer and Pepper is jet propelled Giving you a rough idea McElroy (200 pounds) and Pepper (191) have already been drafted by the professional Chicago Bears and the Detroit Lions respectively' And dont think the pros dont know where to look The
