T'C i f-A KINGSPORT TIMES-NEWS Sunday May i 1965 On Thenterstate- Today motor vehicles are -traveling over a total Of '337 miles of Interstate Highways in Tennessee -Another 498 miles is under contract: for paving and 142 miles more is being graded drained and being made ready for paving --I But what is being' done on Interstate 81 up here in this section of the state? is a question being asked daily -by' citi-" -pns in Upper East Tennessee Interstate 81 when completed will link "the areas between Bristol and Knoxville and all points beyond For years a -fraction over a mile of this road has been completed in this 7 area This is the stretch from the Virginia state line to a quarter of a mile west of the 181 and liW interchange near- Bristol But work is beginning on the other end of the'road construction slated for 1968-69 The two sections of the route from the interchange with 140 near Dandridge to near Bulls Gap will be under construction in the 1965-66 fiscal year Rights-of-way were ob-tained during the present year The cost for the entire route from the Virginia state line to the 140 intersection is estimated at 840012000 The most expensive will be the stretch from Dandridge to White Pine which is estimated at 85892000 1 The newest schedule released last week is almost the same as that published by the Times-News nearly two years ao Although it is the current plan' the highway department hotes that it inflexible and subject to change ue to funds availability and personnel Capacity The Tennessee "Department of Highways- has prepared for the Times-News the 'accompanying' map showing the schedule for obtaining rights-of-way and constructions According to this schedule rights-of-way for the stretch of 181 from the 11W intersection to a point near Tri-City Airport will be acquired during the 1965-66 fiscal year with construction slated the following year The highway department estimates' this section of the superhighway will cost approximately $4482000 During the yeai 1966-67 rights-of-way will be obtained from the airport to State Route 81 near Fall Branch' with construction scheduled for 1967-68 The longest segment from State 81 to near Bulls Gap will be the last portion of the road tp be built Rights-of-way 'will be obtained for these four sectipns during 1967-68 and ubr 1-1 1(4 to June 3ttQ July 11965 fa Jurt 3S1l( LIBERTY BELL RECIPIENT Dorman' Stout left presents the Kingsport Bar Associations Liberty Bell -Award to a smiling James Marquis Jr t(Ttaej5-News Photo Walter Ddane) July 1966 lo Juno 3011(7 lllS 1 July 1197 lo Juno 301111 Honored By Bar Iy 119(1 lojun3ou Canada Ties Told Derby Entrance Deadline Open Kiwanis Helps Cement Northern Friendship James Marquis Jr was presented the Kingsport Bar Associations 1965 Liberty Bell Award Friday night at the annual Law Day banquet? In making the presentation Dorman Stout award chairman laid: The purpose of the Liberty Bell Award is to recognize some individuals efforts in community service which strengthens the effectiveness of the American system of freedom under the law4 1 In accepting the award Marquis who was visibly surprised said it is the greatest -honof I have ever received" If Americans dont believe this is the greatest country in the world then it will not continue to be he said The awards winner who was Kingsports Young Man of the 'Year in 1961 has beeh 'active in many phases of civic life of the city for many years A vetpran of the Korean War he came to KingsporT shortly after being discharged He was the chairman of the Kingsport Ballot Battalion in 1956 and through his efforts supplemental voter registrations were held in the city for the firsrtime In a single day L300 new people were registered to vote here Later he assisted in getting a legislative Act passed requiring supplemental registrations to be held in Kingsport He is a member of Hammond Post No 3 American 'Legion and as a member of its Americanism- Committee has pushed the fly the flag projects of the Legion and the VFW He has served on the Boys and Girls Committee that encourages high school students to learn more about their local and county governments and was ihe speaker at their banquets in 1963 and 1965 Last year he was the group discussion leader in the Action Course in Practical Politics offered by the Chamber of Commerce which met for 18 weeks at 7 am He is now chairman of the Chambers National tAffais committee In 1960 he formed an- Americanism Committee within the Kingsport Jaycees which has continued to be very active He urged all members to-purchase and fly the American flag at their homes on national holidays 7 In 1962 hie was named Jaycee state chairman for -Americanism- and in 1963 spoke to over 5000 people from civic clubs church youth and other organizations Marquis was an unsuccessful candidate for alderman in 1961 and in 1963 appeared In an award-winning film on Americanism He has been in the insurance business while in Kingsport and just recently was appointed administrative assistant of Ed- wards Enterprises The first of a series of Soap Box Derby clinics will be held at 2pm today at Wav-erly Road" Presbyterian Church James Hill derby director said there still is- room for more boys to enter the race and any interested may come to the clinic and register there if accompanied by their parents Forty-one boys have registered soiar Hill said Arrangements are being made for spon sors for each boy entered Sponsors pay $30 which covers entry fees and pays for "wheels and axles Some sponsors also are paying for other materials voluntarily The rules require that the boys build their own racers whether wiih materials supplied by their 'sponsors or themselves 7 'With this arrangement covering costs no boy need hang back for fear he cant pay his expenses Hill said Dr Farnsworth said the two nations are dependent on each other with Canada being more dependent on the United States He said much of Canadian in-' dustry is owned and financed by residents of the US and thatjnany US industries have-subsjdiaries in Canada Dr Farnsworth said 25' per cent of all Canadian Industry is controlled by US interests and about 50 per cent of all manufacturing is controlled by residents of the US Police Offer Bargain Price On Parking lice department said Saturday if officers have to go to the trouble of taking a warrant or sending a reminder letter there will be no bargain involved In a case like that the cost will be 8250 for each ticket after 15 days the spokesman said gain for you If youll come into the Public 'Safety Building voluntarily and pay those back tickets it will only cost you a dollar a ticket That extra 81-50 per ticket after 15 days will be forgotten But a spokesman for the po Do you have a glove box full of Kingsport parking tickets aU unpaid?
