Vols Smash Bama 14-9 In Annual Grid Classic Bf ESCAR THOMPSON Knoxville Tenn (P) Tennessee came from behind in the last two minutes Saturday to dump Alabama 14 to 9 A hysterical capacity crowd of 50000 saw the thriller The win projected the once-beaten Volunteers into the Southeastern Conference Championship race At the same time as this battle has so many times in the past it put the Vols into contention for a possible post-season Bowl bid The loss was a heart-breaker for Alabama Ten Alabama scored first taking the opening kickoff on its 37 and sloshing to Tenneseses 10 on 13 plays Here Quarterback Butch Avinger took to the air for the first time and it backfired End Doug Atkins intercepted for Tennessee on the Vols 10 but he fumbled the ball when tackled on the 13 and Sandy Helms recovered for Alabama The Crimsons picked up four yards on three plays Then Red Lutz a wingman came rushing off the bench to kick a field goal from Tennessees nine nessee completely bottled up Alabamas vaunted passing attack but the Crimson Tide turned loose a horde of hard-running backs who churned up 314 yards against Tennessees line A sophomore fullback Andy Kozar from St Michael Pa Notre Dame looking sluggish in comparison with Indianas prancing Hoosiers was three touchdowns behind before it showed any of the resilience generally expected of scored-on Irish teams It was the first time Indiana had beaten Notre Dame since 1906 and the sellout crowd frolicked on the gridiron long after the final gun It was the first time Notre Dame had lost two games in one season since Jr new coach of the Fort Jack-son Red Devils is no stranger in football language Fact is opponents of the University of Tennessee probably wish it hadnt been so familiar during Littlefords four-year stay with the Volunteers A break-away runner a forceful and accurate passer and a punter of renown Littlefords name is still fresh on the minds of North Carolinians They re member a 35-7 licking their UNC Tarheels took from Littleford and Company last year It was Littleford not Charlie Justice whose name glared in the Sunday morning headlines following the game It was Littleford who was the big cog in turning in the victory Hes been a great athlete for a long time If you dont believe it just ask anyone who knew him at Tennessee High of Bristol Tenn Theyll tell you Littleford was voted hands-down the best athlete the school has ever produced Then ask the boys in the Southeastern bonference Theyll tell you he was named (he best backfleld man in the loop in 1948 Also Littleford was captain of the Volunteers a mighty name in football during his senior year Littleford was graduated from Tennessee High in 1943 He had been captain of the schools grid team for three years The University of he played for the 1st Division He returned home and made himself welcome to the Tennessee Volunteers and unwelcome to UT rivals Hal was graduated from Tennessee last spring Then he was married to
