Hazleton Standard-Speaker, Friday, January 20, 1995 Obituaries Obituaries Harry Haas Harry August Haas, 81, of 27 Valley Gorge Mobile Home Park, White Haven, died Thursday at his home. Born in Allentown, he was 1 the son of the late Harry G. and Emma (Stephens) He was a member of St. Luke's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Freeland. After retiring from 20 years' of service with the Army at Tobyhanna, Haas owned and operated Haas Green House for 10 years in Sandy Valley.

He recently relocated to White Haven from Fredericksburg, where he served with the Lake of the Woods Fire and Rescue Co. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Mrs. Jack (Anna) Barthold, and a brother, Edward." Surviving are his wife, Gladys; daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Patricia) Stiller, Morgantown, W.V.; and Mrs. Phillip (Susan) Adamczyk, Tallahassee, brothers, Warren, John and James, all of Allentown; sisters, Mrs.

Robert (Miriam) Meas, Old Town, and Mrs. Charles (Ruth) Fair, Quakertown; and five grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A memorial service will be held for the family at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, Freeland.

Interment will be in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the White Haven Ambulance, the American Heart Association, or St. Luke's Evangelical Church. Stoffa of Hubert, N.C., died Jan. 13 at his home. Born in Freeland, he was the son of the late Joseph. J. and Anna (Grega) Stoffa Sr.

Stoffa was an honorary life member of the Knights of Columbua in 1 Swansboro, N.C.; a Fourth Degree Assembly, Jacksonville, N.C.; association member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles; a member of the Fleet Reserve Association in Jacksonville; and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose in Swansboro. He served on the Scout Committee for Troop No. 347 in Hubert, N.C, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Freeland. Before retiring, Stoffa was in the Marine Corps and served during World War II and the Korean War. He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brother, Thomas, and sisters, Anna Starrick and Dorothy Buda.

Surviving are his wife, Marguerite (Gomez) Stoffa; a daughter, Marguerite, Brandon, brothers, Edward, Drifton; Francis, Sayre; Albert, Quakake; and George, Cocoa, Fla; and sisters, Margaret Prokop, Drifton; Betty Behm, Drums; Marie Jackson, Merritt Island, Pauline Leary, Lake Clarke Shores, and Anges Cepil, Harleigh; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held in St. Mildren's Roman Catholic Church, Swansboro. A military funeral was held Tuesday at the North Carolina Vets Cemetery, Jacksonville. Guido Bussolon Guido Bussolon, 63 of Las Vegas, Nevada, and formerly of Hazleton, died unexpectedly Jan.

11 at his home. Born in Weston, June 26, 1931, he was the son of the late Corino and Elvira Bussolon. He was a resident of the Hazleton area most of his life. He moved to Las Vegas 16 years ago. He was a graduate of Black Creek Township High School and was a member of Sacred Heart Church in Weston.

He was formerly employed by Sentinel Electronics in Hazleton for a number of years and later by the Imperial Palace Casino in Las Vegas. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Bussolon was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a brother, Bruno. Surviving are his wife, the former Ellene Dickerson; a daughter, Mrs. Gary (Corine) Sworen, Mountaintop; stepchildren, William Burgie, Henderson, Robert Bruzgulis, Utica, N.Y.; Charles Bruzgulis, Saylorsburg; and Ellena Cannon, Las Vegas, Nev; two granddaughters and one step-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held at the Palm Mortuary-Downtown, Las Vegas, Nev. Committal services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Cemetery, Weston. Perdue steps down BALTIMORE (AP) No more Mr. Tough Guy for Frank Perdue.

After appearing in 171 commercials since 1971, the tough man who made tender chickens is stepping down as the face of Perdue Farms Inc. In a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign that starts Monday, the 74-year-old Perdue will introduce his son, Jim, as "a little project I have been working on for the past 45 years." The first commercial shows the elder Perdue pacing in an office, saying his competitors "are still waiting for us to get soft." Sons and Families Joseph Gregoria Joseph "Nitchie" Gregoria, 96, a barber for more than 63 years in the Hazleton area, died Wednesday at Weatherwood, Carbon County Home for the Aged, Weatherly. He operated Nitchie's Barbershop in the city, and trained many local barbers. During World War II he was a civilian barber for the Army at Fort Indiantown Gap.

Born in Hazleton, Oct. 21, 1898, he was the son of the late Michael and Annuntiatae "Nancy" (DeFilippi) Gregoria. He was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Weatherly. Preceding him in death were his wife, the former Mary Tanner, in 1989; brothers and sisters, Daniel, Leo, James, Angelo, Anthony, Mildred Gregoria and Mary Caso; and one great grandson, Brian Van Horn.

Suviving are son, Michael, New Jersey; stepson, Joseph Tanner, Weatherly; sister, Anna Gregoria, Hazleton; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at the Philip J. Jeffries Funeral Home, Weatherly, on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. in St.

Nicholas Church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, McAdoo, at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home on Saturday.

Catherine Mondell Catherine Mondell of 342 Tresckow Road, McAdoo, died Thursday evening at the Leader Nursing Home, Allentown. She was employed at Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center, and was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, McAdoo. Complete information will be announced by the Damiano Funeral Home, McAdoo.

(Photo by Frank Andruscavage) Man, 92, dies of heart attack during blaze in Gilberton By FRANK ANDRUSCAVAGE Standard-Speaker Staff Writer MAHANOY A 92-year-old man died of a heart attack as fire destroyed his home and two others in the Mahanoy Plane section of Gilberton Borough Thursday morning. The body of William J. Chappell was found in the bathroom area at the rear of his High Street home. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 10:30 a.m.

by Schuylkill County Deputy Coroner Joseph Yachura of Girardville. Chappell's body was taken to Pottsville Hospital where an autopsy was performed by Dr. Richard Bindie, county pathologist. Bindie determined that Chappel had died of a heart attack. Burns turns 99 LOS ANGELES (AP) George Burns and Gracie Allen have been reunited at the intersection of Gracie Allen Drive and George Burns Road.

Burns, who turns 99 today, made his first public appearance in months at the dedication of a street named for his late wife and comedy partner. She died of a heart attack in 1964. "It's nice to be here, nice to be on the corner of Burns and Allen. When you're 99 years old, it's nice to be anyplace," Burns said Thursday. It was Burns' first appearance since undergoing surgery to drain fluid that built up in his brain after he fell in his bathtub on July 13.

Funerals The funeral of Catherine Journick of Centown, Beaver Meadows, who died Monday at Hazleton General Hospital, was held Thursday from the Frank J. Bonin Funeral Home Inc. The Rev. John Duminiak gave the blessing at the funeral home, celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's R.C.

Late Thursday morning, Ruiz said an exact cause of the fire had not yet been determined because of extent of the damage. Ruiz said the blaze apparently started in Chappell's kitchen, caused by a dual burner hot plate being left on.

The fire was discovered around 4:15 a.m. when Joseph Gutsie, who lives nearby with his wife Mary Lou, smelled smoke. Gutsie went outside his home, saw the fire and summoned help. The Gutsies, along with neighbors Stephen and Joan McCarthy, went to the scene and began banging on doors to alert residents. The only other person living in one of the three homes destroyed was Eugene Miller who escaped without injury.

Chappell's home, as well as a vacant property east, and the Miller home on the end of the three-house row were destroyed. Another home, just west of the Chappell home but not attached, suffered minor heat, smoke and a water damage. The building was occupied by Anna Letunic who a escaped unharmed. Rock guitarist escapes injury MILL VALLEY, Calif. (AP) Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia escaped injury when he lost control of his car and crashed into a highway retaining wall. The 52-year-old Garcia was driving a loaner from a BMW dealership Wednesday while his car was in the shop.
