-JAS. Will TAKER, Chairman. Johx Latham, i 19lh November We observed an article in Saturday's Intelligencer in -which notice is taken of a rumored deficiency in the funds of the Pot Office Department. A STRANGE PHENOMKNON- 1 On morning about 5 o'clock, the whole heavens were illuminated, with the appearance of shooting stars, falling like a shower of snow, some as walnuts, descending toward the earth, others shooting across the element leaving a long streak behind, 4 or 5 yards in length which continued three or four minates betore they disappcaretl.

This Phenomena contitiUed until half past six o'clock, the citizens of Raleigh and its vicinity, who saw it were not a little a-larmed, and in some houses the fvmales were heard ata distance crying aloud to God for and calling upon christians, pray for them, and the. males were seenstanding in the porches and yards, witlt solemn countenances, and trembling limbs, expecting that haiture was sinking, and that the stars of Heaven were falling: in realityt as a fig tiee cast- eth her untimely figs when shaken byanj unexpected tornado, some were looking to see the Son of God appear on a claud jrith a company of shining angels, to take vengeance on his enemies and to receive tlierihteoas, to those mansions prepared for them, eternal in the heavens. The writer of these lines, being an early riser, and. having finished his studies, was walking; aeross his room for recreation, with his window hoisted towards the east, saw tfie first appearance of the phenomena, which began about half past 5 oclock and continued to increase. About half past 5 he left his room and visited those fam-ilies in the neighbourhood to explain to them the nature, and cause of those meteors and to comfort those families, who were so excited throngh fear, that their health and life were iu danger.
