(Columbia) shows that its not on this record anyway Side one is an undistinguished assortment of mid- to uptempo rock tunes' Side two starts off more promis-ihgly with "Big Crash a bouncy dance tune with an effective interplay between John Nelsons lead guitar and Duane Hitchings synthesizer ItB the albums likely first single Money appears to be venturing into new music with "Leave It To Me another dance track whose sound is close to that of many of the popular synth-bands working at the moment Theater ry-'l WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF? and Richards include a couple of surprises On "Too Much Blood for example they enlist the aid of Sugar Hills CHOPs horn section drummer Sly Dunbar and expert Moroccan percussionists The result is a sizzling funk number that moves along in a headlong rush with Jaggers rap superimposed over the proceedings When the singer says wanna dance I wanna sing I wanna bust up everything you not only believe him you feel rather the same way Fast on the heels of "Blood comes the albums other scorcher "Pretty Beat Up a beguiling mid-funk drill with exhilarating vocals by Jagger As charged as the music is on Undercover the albums lyrics also display a kind of sheen as if Jagger and Richards have been invigorated Take "It Must Be Hell Even as it muscles along the cut reverberates with political consciousness For a pair of supposedly jaded rock stars the lead Stones seem remarkably incisive One could swear that with each succeeding album the Pointer Sisters become more atrophied Break Out (Planet) their new Richard Perry production sounds as if Michael McDonald served as arranger or at least adviser What we have here is a spate of subdued midtempo tunes "I Need You "Baby Come And Get It among others each featuring programmed drum machines and syhthesizers Not surprisingly the whole thing is devoid of spontaneity Some superstar groups bounce back others simply succumb to Seafood
