very fair McEnroe said of the fans "Of course its better for us to play in the United States But thats what makes the Davis Cup so great the way the crowds root for their country Noah and Leconte were under pressure for nearly the entire match Leconte lost his service in the' fourth game of the first set giving the Americans a 3-1 lead In the second set Leconte gained confidence and played better but the Americans broke through against Noah capturing his service to lead 5-4 The French pair broke Fleming in the third set and led 3-0 but failed to hold the lead They later served to lead 5-4 and had a set point in the next game when Fleming was serving Leconte wasted it with a weak return into the net Noah was broken at 8-7 A flashing backhand pass from McEnroe was the killer blow McEnroes serving and volleying vere a strong factor in the US victory He served in 10 games in the match and in' those games the French won only 10 points This is the United States 53rd appearance in a Davis Cup final France has not reached the final since 1933 The Associated Press GRENOBLE France John McEnroe and Peter Fleming swamped the French in doubles competition Saturday and carried the United States to its 28th Davis Cup triumph McEnroe and Fleming teamed to defeat Yannick Noah and Henri Leconte 6-3 6-4 9-7 giving the United States an insurmountable 3-0 lead in the best-of-five match series Two singles matches were still scheduled today although the results will have no effect on the US victory Mayer will face Noah and McEnroe will take on Leconte It was McEnroes fourth Davis Cup triumph with the US team in six years He and Fleming stretched their Davis Cup doubles record to 10-0 Noah 22 and Leconte 19 once were within a point of winning the third set "But the two Americans both served and returned so well Noah said "When you are two matches down it is very difficult to get back into it against such a fine team In the opening singles Friday McEnroe edged Noah in five the Commodore fans something to cheer about after an 18-year drought at Dudley Field Coach George MacIntyres club rode to the victory on the arm of senior quarterback Whit Taylor who completed 24 of 42 passes for 391 yards and three touchdowns The win was Vanderbilts first over the Volunteers since 1975 when the Commodores won 17-14 Taylors arsenal of aerial works included a 65-yard pass to-split end Phil Roach at the Tennessee 8-yard line that set up the winning touchdown a 1-yard run by Taylor with 2:53 remaining on the clock The drive required only six plays to cover 84 yards Big plays were
