The city is negotiating a contract with Internet Access Technologies, a Houston company that within the next 30 days plans to make "virtual desktops" available to every resi- dent who wants one.

I To maintain the access, however, Houston's city council will have to approve a contract with IAT. How Jmuch the technology will cost the city hasn't been disclosed. The company's product, ISimDesk, includes word processing, spreadsheets, file management and remote printing. Companies such as Microsoft have been working to develop similar technology. I "Socioeconomic conditions pre-" vent people around the globe from having access to the information highway," IAT chief executive officer Robert E.

Knowling said Monday. "We can make access available to any person in the city. The only cost I is how much it costs for a person to get to a public facility to access their Internet account." The key to the software for Hous-. Mayor Lee Brown is that it will fallow those who previously only "could surf the Internet and send e-tmail at public libraries to produce 'and send electronic resumes and share data files with one another. "This will give everyone a chance to do that," Brown said.

"We are in the information age. The computer is king. There is no one that can be left out of the information age now." IAT is discussing potential deals for the company's product, which offers capabilities in addition to standard e-mail and Internet access, including 25 megabytes of storage space, with a. dozen other I cities, Knowling said. IAT's SimDesk also will be avail-, able on Worldnet beginning Sept.

4, company founder Ray Davis said. "It's the ability to have access to your information from any Web-enabled device," Davis said. "The future of the Internet was launched today." The DrogramannouncecLby- Career Separates by I.N Studio Brown, will allow citizens to access their accounts through computers at 35 libraries located throughout the city and intends to eventually i expand access to fire and police sta-. -tions. "We are going to bridge the digi-; tal divide," Brown said.

Orlando Sanchez, a Houston city councilman who hopes to unseat Brown as mayor this November, said he's all for technology, but won- ders about Brown's sudden interest. "I'm sure the men and women of I the fire department will find that i interest exciting too," he said, "While most other fire departments have on-board computers that will give them the number of floors and all the high-tech information they I need to save the lives of those inside and themselves, regretfully our fire-; fighters pull up with paper maps." Chris Bell, another city council- jnan aiming for Brown's job, says he I too is skeptical. If successful, Davis admits, the pilot project could help his company sell its product elsewhere, whether i Houston signs on the dotted line or not. I "We're no dummies," he said. "We I did have our own targeted plan to bring it to students, but it was basi-I cally a twist of fate that brought us to the mayor's office and opened our eyes to a huge industry that is thirsting for this." each piece Add to your career wardrobe with solid jackets and floral printed skirts to mix and match from I.N.
