Tennesseans from necessity have developed their own treatments for ailments and have passed their practices down through the generations The most popular treatment found by a Science Hill High School English class making a survey recently was the use of castor oil for stomach ailments Area residents from days past even had cures for the common cold They made hot poultices for the chest They also had a mixture of kerosene and sugar to dnnk for a cold and sore throat Whiskey and cherry bark was combined to clear the throat and prevent coughing Chills were treated by home remedies also Tonics such as Hashs Chill Tonic Grove's Chill Tonic and quinine were administered A common illness of the past was worms Mountain people around Johnson City had two cures for worms A sick person could take a slow cure by drinking molasses or the quick cure of turpentine and sugar Other old remedies worked but with un-pleasantnes Vinegar was rubbed on the skin for sunburn and snuff juice was ap- plied to bee stings Even with many doctors practicing modem medicine and a medical school located Johnson City today many residents still use home remedies learned from family and neighbors and will no doubt pass these cures on to future generations PEPSI DR PEPPER 7-UP MOUNTAIN DEW SHANNON VIEW GROCERY GRAY TEKN JiOCX CKVJiCJi QladCtj Presents JPastor -JRm auzeCC Pastor Reg Layzell is presently Pastor
