pins Esau played a part There were nd reproaches There was no unholy recollection to mar the complete magnanimity of his action He ran to meet Jacob em bracing him and kissing him while the two men wept and then as Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the great company with Jacob he was moved further The things that Jacob had brought to win his favor he refused to accept pleading that he had enough and offering rather a present on his own behalf It is a delightful interlude or climax in the story of the two brothers The narrative lights up the whole drama like sunlight pouring through the clouds on a dark and troubled day The man of aggressive selfish ambition may become a strong and noble character when he is purged from his meanness and duplicity and on the other hand a man who lacks ambition who is rather slack and indifferent may become a very gentle and admirable character when he orders his life aright 'faithful in the things that are needful but unselfish and gener ous and free entirely from greed and acquisitiveness The story is a "record of men of very diverse natures and characters may under the oper ation of right forces alike come to the better way of life And it reveals how the finer things of character fairness courage un selfishness and magnanimity out live all achievements of aggressive ness and acquisitiveness Men are remembered ultimately for what they WILLIAM GILROY Editor of The Congregationalist The reconciliation of Jacob and Esau came late but it was very effectual when it came Probably it was made possible by the fact that both men had grown in wis dom and also 'in moral outlook and character since the day when slack ness in the one man and duplicity in the other had brought tragic Reparation between the brothers On the whole the story of the reconciliation is more creditable to Esau than to Jacob and it does much to restore the balance in estimate of the character of the man who sold his birthright Esau was the aggrieved party the concessions were almost en tirely on his side Jacob approach ed their meeting with fear a fear that was born of a guilty con science He knew that he had wronged his brother and his com mon sense led him to expect a reception However Jacob had largely out grown his selfishness and his trickery Responsibility had sob ered him and it was to his credit that he was evidently more con cerned for the safety of the wo men and children than for himself At any rate he protected them and went forward himself to meet the risk and the possible wrath of his brother He bowed himself to the ground seven times in token of his humil ity and perhaps as an acknowledg ment of his repentance Something new in hair fashions has bobbed up the tooth bang attractively displayed here by Mme Roube Tanski prom his God as he did Daniel was not afraid to pray He was not timid about praying He knew the source of his power No wonder that he faced the I ons unafraid and stood unafraid in the presence of kings
