time or occasional faculty Library acquisitions have now passed the quarter million mark with 32080 volumes added to the shelves during the past year The university subscribes to 2438 periodicals and has a map collection in excess of 30000 domestic and foreign maps During the last year the University was approved for a law enforcement and correction services program The university also added a new master's program in environmental health A new doctoral program was approved subject to the availability of funds from appropriations or private sources Two new degrees were approved by the Higher Education Commission for ETSU the associate degree in nursing and the bachelor of social welfare degree ETSU became the second institution of higher learning in the state to have a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi one of the top honor fraternities in the country The ROTC Sponsor Corps drill team won the national championship for the second consecutive year for co-ed drill competition at the National Cherry Blossom Festival Washington DC In sports ETSU won the Ohio Valley Conference Golf and Cross Country Championships placed three members on the All American Rifle Team and placed Bill Casey oo the All America football team in the NCAA college division ETSU is looking forward to greater expansion and growth 1971 A number of building projects which have been held up pending the settlement of the railroad dispute will get under way These include two apartment buildings a stadium physical education complex and an information security center The curriculum is undergoing revision and the year will see addition of new programs and course of study to increase the offerings at both the undergraduate and graduate levels More emphasis will be placed upon adult education and nondegree programs This year more than 90 non-degree non-credit programs are available to Upper East Tennesseans pursuit of excellence is the basic philosophy of growth at East Tennessee State University which sees both fao-ulty and administration searching for new opportunities to serve the state By RAY STAHL ETSU Public Relations A growing student body mor buildings and an expanding curriculum spell progress at East Tennessee State University Three new enrollment records were set during 1970 The fall 1970 enrollment of 9740 was the largest in the history The 5722 students enrolled for the 1970 summer sessions set a new summer school enrollment record The winter quarter enrollment of 8400 set a new record for winter quarters The main campus at Johnson City now exceeds 300 acres withs new acquisitions of land and property during the year totaling $1 million During 1970 two married student apartment buildings were completed at a cost of $884994 and an addition to the Health Building was built at a cost of $1623998 At Kingsport construction on a new building housing the Kingsport University Center was bepn at a cost of $1400000 Two new fuil-time administrative posts were formed bv creating positions for a fulltime director of alumni affairs and a director of development The new East Tennessee State University Foundation was created during the year to implement the development program The university budget now operates under a $14 million budget with an annual payroll of $8 million for approximately 1000 employes The university has 460 full-time teachers and administrators and 150 part- Highway program key to top growth Outdoor living to be featured in camping show BRISTOL The latest In camping equipment and demonstrations of outdoor cooking and living will highlight the two-day camping show that wj be held Saturday and Sunday March 6th and 7th at the YWCA on Edgemont Avenue and the Southside Shopping Center Tha show is being sponsored jointly by the YWCA and the Bristol Chapter of the National Campers and Hikers Association Many area merchants will have displays of camping equipment and supplies Among them are Store the King Company Sears Wholesale Tri-State Discount Center and many others Campers boats ancyarge equipment will be displayed outdoors Smaller equipment wiH -be displayed ihdoors at tha YWCA with demonstrations going on during the entire two-day show Like gleaming ribbons the highway stretches across rolling Washington County Hills This is the new four-laned Appalachian Highway the new 23 Already a section is open from Boones Creek to Gray offering modern highway service to that area of the county Beyond he highway is completed to Fordtown but that part is not open because of the incompleted interchange with Interstate 81 This is one of the highways which will be serving Johnson City in the near future The new 23 will provide swift access to Kingsport and be- Smd it is a limited access ghway Under construction is that segment from Boones Creek to Princeton Road in Johnson City Malone Brothers of Greeneville is the contractor completion of this segment should he realized within a year The portion of the highway through Johnson City called the norta south expressway will go to contract next soon as possible with completion scheduled by 1973 The major interchange with which Johnson Citians will be concerned will be that in the Fordtown area of Sullivan County A Johnson Citian will be able to drive to that interchange on the Appalachian highway then head westward to Knoxville Nashville or Memphis or turn eastward for Bristol Roanoke Va and northward into Pennsylvania Other highway projects in the area include more of the 19-E from Elizabethton southward eventually a new highway is expected from here to Elizabethton joining that new highway In Johnson City Itself construction has already started on the University Expressway The four-lane route will go from the Appalachian Highway on the south along Grande Avenue and then circle to the campus A second phase of that route will see the highway cross the railroad tracks at Tennessee Street then head northward until it reaches John Exum Parkway- year The State Highway Department is still in the process of getting the right of way However the route of the expressway is established From Princeton Road the highway heads eastward then parallels Baxter Street to the west continues southward between Oak and Elm Streets crosses Southern Railway tracks continues out Division Street to Maple then heads eastward again before crossing the hill It will pass behind Thomas Products Co continue southward Eventually the highway will be built to the North Carolina line The neared Interstate highway is Ml A portion of the Interstate passes through Washington County near Fall Branch When completed Ml will join 1-40 near Morristown offering Upper East Tennnes-seans quick access to Knoxville and to the portions of Tennessee westward Gov Winfield Dunn recently announced a schedule tor putting all of 1-81 and 1-40 in East Tennessee under contract as Four new offices set-here by Block tt Block plans four new offices for 1971 The firm offers complete income tax service for residents of Johnson Cityv Bristol Kingsport Elizabethan Erwin Greeneville Southwest Virginia and Avery 'County The firm was founded in the Tri-Cities area in 1965 with the parent company located in Kansas City founded in 1955 The local company began operations with three employes and now have 150 During the past five years the firm has expanded from one office to 18 in the Tri-Cities area Deanna Shipley is the area manager and sees a good gen-oral business prospect for 1971 Johnson Gtians drank more beer in 1970 Johnson Citians drank more beer In 1970 than in 1969 according to reports from the Tennessee Malt Beverage Association in Nashville The city received $374184 as" its share of the 17 per cent wholesale beer tax as compared to $320530 in 1969 All
