1 ense ajors BY JIMMY SMYTH 1 Executive Sports Editor KNOXVILLE (or lack of it) still bothers head coach Johnny Majors as the 1978 football season approaches 5 The Volunteer defense great last season as Tennessee posted a 4-7 the first losing season for a Big Orange gridiron outfit in 13 years Majors mentioned the Vol defense here yesterday on Press and Picture Day prior to the concentrated three weeks of work before the Vols take on dangerous UCLA at 7 30 pm on Sept 16 in Neyland Stadium And the fact that the toughness of the- schedule is also on Johnny's mind was shown by his reference to two of the next four foes he Auburn (Sept 30 in Birmingham) and Alabama (Oct 21 in Knoxville) And of course defending national champion Notre Dame on down the line Nov 11 in South Bend Ind The Vol defense seemed improved the latter part of the 1977 campaign particularly against Kentucky and Vanderbilt However the Vols lost such standouts as Danny Jenkins of Elizabethton Greg Jones of Bristol and David Barron of a tackle linebacker and end like very much to still have around this their charges on the artificial four opponents' passes broken turf of Neyland Stadium for up pictures and interviews Clark Ikmcan sophomore defensive bock from Unicoi County High School echoed the optimism radiating from this squad feels real good about this Duncan said as be made the rounds from one photo session to another think the spirit is there and we're hopeful of having a good Duncan as a freshman made a solid contribution last season including 13 tackles and four assists plus an interception a fumble recovery and If the defense poses a problem the offense helps the sometimes pessimistic Majors smile a little Jimmy Streater is returning at quarterback with every indication that the 161-pound junior from Sylva is being depended upon heavily this season When it was mentioned that Streater might be injured and need a replacement Majors all but groaned but regained his conwosure to (See Vols page 36) Although Majors never claimed greatness for the Vol defense in 1977 he did feel that people like Jenkins Jones and Barron provided great leadership that kept the season from being more disastrous than it was Following a press conference at Stokely Center yesterday the Vol coaches assembled Sports JOHNSON Sports uiuat tue utAki MAUif iraiAisi lil I unw WHAT non I Will
