All-new Sonny Smith Show gets The practically all-new Son-nv Smith Show will make its debut Monday night with a lot of new faces in the cast a brand-new stage and a new format In other words the East Tennessee State Buccaneers will open the 1977-78 basketball season Monday at 8 pm as they meet the Campbell College Flghtin' Camels in Memorial Cotter the hew 12000 seat arena which gives the Big Blue one of the finest arenas in the nation in which to play Under Maestro Smith who wiU be beginning his second season at the helm of the Buccaneers there will be a different style of play this season dan to speed up the said Smith attempt to run more this season than we did last year We will be quicker and we will use a tought man to man defense least we hope he added added ball handling skills and quickness" the Buccaneer coach said needed a dominating center which we didn't get and we really have the physical strength to give us the intimidating force you need in basketball However Smith and his assistants Jim Hallihan Mack McCarthy and graduate assistant Henry Argabnte did a rather remarkable job of turning the Buccaneer program around their first season They took a 6-20 team and turned it around into a 12-14 dub which would have been better with some added luck in several contests Smith figures the Buccaneers had an adequate recruiting campaign and hopefully he and his staff have-blended seven returning veterans with two junior college transfers and two freshmen into a smooth-working unit There is some talent on hand but as the Buccaneer coach quickly points out everyone" else on the schedule has a lot of talent also The Buccaneers have been hampered in pre-season drills somewhat by injuries but Smith does feel progress has been made as his charges begin a very tough schedule which sees them play seven" games in 14 days Scott Place a 6-6 sophomore from Roanoke Va is the leading scorer returning from1 last season Place an All-OVC freshman selection earned a 10 point scoring average for the total campaign However when he was inserted into the starting lineup midway through the season he averaged better than IS points per game Jim Smith a 6-6 sophomore from Livingston Va has fully recovered from a knee injury which sidelined him the latter-part of the season Smith was just coming into his own when he underwent an operation He was carrying a better than eight points per game average and was instrumental in Buc wins over Eastern Kentucky and Morehead State BJ Johnson a 6-3 guard from Harrisonburg Va is back but will be at a new post Last year Johnson played point guard but has been moved to the other guard spot for the upcoming campaign Luke Veney a 6-S 220 pound senior from Lexington' Va returns but he underwent a knee operation several weeks ago and is not back to fullstrength as yet He was considered the team's best defensive player a year ago Another returnee who has looked good in pre-season drills is Atlee Hammaker The 6-2 guard from Alexandria Var -earned himself a -reputation last season for (See SONNY SMITY page 26) PRESS-CHRONICLE SpOrtS Sports JOHNSON wmwi mt wcw ow NOU SUNDAY NOVEMBER 27 1977 Yols elude SEC cellar maul over-zealous fans by crushing the Commodores 42-7 here yesterday A 1-5 SEC mark much better than an 66 record of course but to coach Johnny Majors and the 1977 squad the win was more than just a win
