Bluefield where he was a catcher for the 1962 Orioles of the Appalachian League All of the cities in the league have been improving their parks over the past few years and with completion Holloway sets new record in Greenville News-Piedmont Relays Pharmacy MONTREAL EXPOS National League East PROSPECTUS: Gene Mauch urged the Expos up to fifth place their highest finish in three years of existence in 1971 but his team may have peaked with that effort though tiie Expos score runs their defense is shaky and their pitching staff allowed so many coups surs last season that' Montreal led the league in runs allowed They made no major during the off-season apparently hoping some lumberjack would come strolling out of the north woods to hit 35 home runs for them With the Phillies showing at least some faint signs of stirring Montreal may well sift back down to the basement leaving the Quebecois to contemplate the sunset over the St Lawrence and the coming hockey season not necessarily in that order PITCHING-Though Bill Stoneman (17-16) led the leaps in walks he still had his best season and Steve Renko turned in a 15-14 record Carl Morton however had disappointing 10-18 second year and Arnie McAnally was 11-12 Mauch is likely to count on those four again with John Strohmayer (7-5) a spot starter Denny Lemaster comes from Houston and Rod Taylor from Mets to back up Claude Raymond (1-7) in bullpen Rookie Tom Walker (13-9) at Dallas-Fort Worth) could win a job 1 The Walking Bruise aka Ron Hunt was hit by a pitch 50 times last season to set a major leape record Htmt also hit 279 and drew 58 walks which makes him one of best lead-off men But the rest of the veteran infield is uninspiring with Ron Fairly (257 71 RBls) at first Bob Bailey (251 83 RBIs) at third and Bob Wine (whose batting is best described as embarrassing) at short Coco Laboy Gary Sutherland and Rich Hacker fill in Rusty Staub (311 with 19 homes 97 RBIs) has established himself in all-star class Boots Day (283) 1 was pleasant surprise in center and Ron Wood (297) helped after coming from Yankees Returnees Jim Fairey Stan Swanson are top reserves but all concerned lack power nobody except Staub
