Lewis Kornfeld, president of the Radio Shack division of Tandy Fort Worth, calls the TRS-80 "the most important product" ever made by his company. The TRS-80 looks like an exciting, relatively inexpensive and versatile tool for small business, some parts of larger business, schools, laboratories, professional people, students, hobbyists and even for people who would seem to have no need for a all computers do: it stores information and retrieves it on command, it makes mathematical calculations, and it produces a variety of answers and results based on commands and information entered from the keyboard and stored in its brain.

The action followed a similar one a week ago Wednesday by the Fed in its effort to restrain inflation. Another depressant was the weakness of the dollar in foreign exchange markets Thursday, which diminished buying in pect in about four to six weeks an increase in the prime rate," he said. That doesn't mean that every third customer buys one.

So far, said Carr, the store has sold about a dozen, but only in the last week or so have the computers become available for immediate delivery. Prior to that, people had to wait up to two months and sometimes longer for delivery. Now Carr has one on display and several in cartons ready for pickup by anyone who wants to buy one. If he runs out, he can get one within hours from the regional warehouse, or even from another Radio Shack store in the area, and he expects sales to pick up correspondingly. Carr said he knew nothing about computers when the first TRS-80 was delivered to his store last September.

Radio Shack introduced them last August. Buyers now get a 232-page plain English book of step-by-step instructions with the machine, but Carr got nothing with his demonstrator except a pre-programmed tape. By trial and error, and by studying each step of the pre-programmed tape, Carr developed a program that reduced the one- to two-hour daily store bookkeeping chore to a half-hour pastime, while also eliminating mathematical errors. Carr said other Radio Shack stores in the area soon got wind of the bookkeeping program and asked for copies. One of the features of the system is it can store programs designed by the user on ordinary cassette tapes through a tape recorder which is part of the system.

The TRS-80 also includes 1 53-key keyboard and a 12-inch video display screen. It is not a kit. You take it home or to your business place, unpack it, and plug it into the house current. The TRS-80 is the lowest priced complete microcomputer system on the market today, but some users have been pleasantly surprised to find it has capabilities that compare favorably with some found on computers costing thousands of dollars. Comments by a customer who dropped in to browse while Carr was demonstrating the TRS-80 Wednesdly are typical: "My brother has a photo business in San Diego and he uses a computer for payrolls, inventory control and other purposes in his business.

"When I told him I was thinking of buying a computer from Radio Shack for my business, he advised me not to buy that one. He said he'd check around to see what was available. "But three days later he called me and said, 'You know, that Radio Shack computer is the best one on the market for the So I bought one last week, and I'm crazy about it. I'm still working on the instruction manual, but I expect to do a lot of things with it." What does the TRS-80 do? It might be used as a daily diary or a diary of important happenings in family life; to inventory household belongings, especially expensive items, for insurance purposes; to list procedures and information relating to various types of emergencies, both personal and household; to store car mileages, oil change information and other servicing data; and perhaps, even to store a poem composed by a child. Leslie M. Pollack, senior vice president of Shearson Hayden Stone said Thursday's sell-off was a "typical reaction in a bull market." He noted that stocks went up faster than could normally be expected in the last two weeks and then ran into a resistance around the 840 level in the Dow. Pollack believes that the selling pressure will not continue more than a few days. Turnover on the Big Board slackened Thursday as 35.47 million shares traded against 44.43 million shares the day before.

Reflecting the market's weakness, 24 of the 30 issues that comprise the Dow-industrial average fell, 3 rose and 3 were unchanged. Among the 15 most actively-traded issues, 10 declined and 5 rose. One of the bigger gainers in the active list was Digital Equipment which advanced 1 to 44 after the company reported a 20 percent rise in first-quarter profits. Among the weaker blue-chips, DuPont dropped 1 Vx to 115; Procter Gamble 1 to 82; Superior Oil 4 to 258; Getty 4 V2 to 162; International Business Machines 1 to 261 and Xerox 1 to 48. Xerox Wednesday reported that its profits in the first quarter climbed 15.3 percent.

Western Publishing slipped 1 Vi to 17 after the company announced it had a first-quarter loss. Alaska Interstate, which reported sharply lower first-quarter net, was off 1 to 18. The company is a natural gas distributor. Another big loser was the Foxboro a maker of process instrumentation items, which tumbled 3 to 32 'A. The company reported lower first quarter profits but said it will still meet its goals for the year.

Chrysler was heavily traded and dropped to 10 On Wednesday, the car producer reported a record loss of $119.8 million for the first quarter against a year-earlier profit. During the recent market upsurge, institutions and foreign investors accounted for most of the buying. The market actually began its retreat in mid-afternoon Wednesday when it was ahead by more than 9 points.

It closed that day up 3.38 points. That selling pressure ap-parently encouraged further selling Thursday by traders who believed that the market had reached at least a short-term peak and decided to cash in on some of their profits. to be feeling its way along in its tightening action. The action by the Fed means banks must compete by offering to pay higher interest charges to borrow uncommitted reserves from other banks. That, in turn, means the banks must charge more to lend to corporations.

The higher cost of borrowing ultimately means less business activity and slower economic growth. Reserv Revere Sotec Ea Soteco St PI Cap Newtn in New Wld Nichlos Nmura Nest Ivtr Nuveen Omega 60 L. 10 72 L. 18 98 L. 11 68 12.56 14 34 L.

6.12 N.L. Japan's trade offer called disappointing WASHINGTON (AP) A U.S. trade official said Thursday that Japan's offer to reduce protectionist tariffs is disappointing and unacceptable. But the official, Ambassador Alan W. Wolf, said he believes that when current negotiations are concluded "we should have access to the Japanese market to the same degree they have access to our market." Wolf told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee that in new Multilateral Trade Negotiations the United States is seeking "equity and parity" in its trading relationship with Japan.

He said so far the U.S. negotiators are "disappointed with Japan's initial tariff offer. "In our view, Japan's tariffs that would be left in place after the reduction would still be unacceptably high, in comparison to ours," he said. Wolf said some progress has been made in one area that had been of concern to the United States. A previous agreement with Japan has resulted in a 41 percent decrease of Japanese color television sets imported by the United States while there was a 19 percent increase last year of U.S.

production of color television sets. NEW YORK (AP) The Federal Reserve Board tightened its credit policy Thursday in a move designed to fight inflation by dampening the economy with higher interest rates. Economists said the bank was acting in response to a steady increase in the nation's supply of money and the expectation the monetary expansion would continue in coming weeks, which would worsen inflation. The Federal Reserve reported Thursday that the most recent measure of the money supply showed a modest increase. The Federal Reserve shifted its credit policy by not increasing reserve funds banks lend each other for short periods.

By not putting new funds into the monetary system, as it had been doing, the Reserve allowed demand for the limited amount of funds to push the interest charge from 7 percent to 7V percent. It was the second tightening of what is called the federal funds rate in just over a week. On April 19 the rate rose from 64 percent to 7 percent. "It's a turning point in monetary policy," said Bob Sinche, an economist at the Wall Street firm of Paine, Webber, Jackson Curtis Inc. "We do not know to what extent the shift in policy will be successful, but I ex TxF Po Delw Delta Drect CP Dodq Bol DodgCx Or Burh 9)1 982 11 33 12 38 5 54 6 05 4 04 4 42 21 00 N.L.
