Santiago de Cuba Sept A terrible hurricane occurred at Nassau on the 8th inst Many houses were blown down fifty vessels wrecked and six lives lost Among the vessels damaged was brig Peerless Cap tain Dowse from Sauga for Delaware Breakwater which put into Nassau in distress fell over and was seriously damaged Schooner Mary Jane and Elizabeth from Baltimore Aug 27th fell over filled and sank in port She will probably be a total loss Schooner Wm Maekie from New York ran aground but got off with some damage Schooner Wm Curry from Long Island Bahamas for New York went aground but will probably be gotten off Schooner Melissa Trask Capt Trask for Boston was driven ashore on the sands at Exuma ALL HANDS LOST Two More Wrecks on Newfoundland St Sept 20 Information comes from Burea and Fortune Bay this morning of two additional wrecks on the Great Banks during the gale of Aug 30th One was a banker Flying Arrow of Burea Capt John Inkpen with a crew of seven The other is schooner Freedom of Fortune the crew of six all told In both cases all bands were lost Tarring: and Feathering New York Sept 20 Application was made yesterday to State Attorney Fessenden of Bridgeport Conn for warrants for the arrests of five of the best known citizens of the town of Trumbull Conn on a charge of having tarred and feathered Charles Houston a resident of that town Houston had been employed as clerk In Bridgeport and is now stopping there being he says afraid to return to his home lest he be killed His version of the affair is that he qnarrelled with his wife and she left him taking one of his children with her that the next night he was awakened from sleep taken out of his house by some masked men dragged some distance to a secluded spot near the village church at Trumbull and tarred and feathered This affair it is said occurred on the 20th of July and Houston assigns as a reason for delay in obtaining redress that no lawyer in the village would undertake to incur the enmity of the parties alleged to have been engaged in the affair Mrs Houston declares that as far as she has any personal knowledge or can gain information her story is true She denies that Houston ever struck her or threatened her with violence and says pluckily whatever differences they have had are their own business She is living at home with her two children but says she is in constant fear of maltreatment at night She bars the doors but twice since Houston has been away some one has come to her doors and tried to force them in A former neighbor declares that on the night of their quarrel Houston heat his wife terribly that he is in the habit of beating his children and has in many ways made himself obnoxious to his neighbors They consider his treatment a good thing The affair promises to create a was temporary chairman and made a speech saying that Robinson was in favor of the present license law and could not represent the Prohibitionists The Republicans had gone from prohibition to license and their nomination yesterday was made by about 300 men who' are Republicans or Democrats just as they happen to feel Committees were appointed George Buttrick of Barre was elected President who reviewed the cause of prohibition and recounted the manner in which that party had been deceived by the declarations of the leading parties the Republicans coming in for a large portion of his animadversions He predicted the ultimate success of prohibition which was the sole remedy for evils which threatened the city and State While the committee on permanent organization was attending to its duties a letter was read from Rev A A Miner in which ho said there is a prospect of a more open abandment of temperance professions on the part of our Republican friends than ever before and this ought to be followed by an equally open abandonment of that party by every true patriot in the State The result will he a commentary on the character of Massachusetts voters A committee of five was appointed to report names for a State Central Committee It was also voted that resolutions be re-ferred to the Committee on Resolutions without debate The Convention then took a recess until 130 Lodge of Odd FellOWS Providence Sept 20 In the Sovereign Grand Lodge session to-day the consideration of the constitutional amendments was taken up Various amendments changing the time of meeting also amendments to admit civilized Indians to membership providing for biennial sessions and requiring that the grand representative shall be a member of a lodge in good standing and bo entitled to the Grand Encampment degree were indefinitely postponed An amendment to admit Past Grand Sires to seats in the Grand Lodge with power to debate make motions and serve on special committees but not with the privilege of yoting was lost The amendment apportioning grand representation in several jurisdictions allowing one representative for two thousand members over two thousand and less than ten thousand two representatives over ten thousand two additional representatives was indefinitely postponed Amendments striking out the word from the constitution was laid on the table Minne-appolis was which sailed from Aspinwall to-day had on hoard a party of naval officers going to the west coast of Central and South America for the purpose of determining the longitude of principal ports by means in Brown University to fill the place of Prof Dimond who long filled that department with great honor and success The new Professor is yet young He is the son of a Baptist minister well known in New England his grandfather being of the same profession and is brother of ex-Governor now Judge Andrews of Connecticut He served through most of our late war to suppress the Rebellion with great fidelity and devotion to the Union At the close of the war he entered the Wesleyan Academy Wilbraham Mass and fitted for entrance to Brown University where he was graduated with distinguished honor He was at once called to preside over the Baptist Literary Institute Suffield Connecticut where he remained some two years and then entered the Theological Institution at Newton After graduation he accepted at a very pressing call the pastorate of the Baptist Church at Beverly Mass Here he remained but a short time having accepted an election to the Presidency of Dennison University Granville Ohio On ing to severe illness in his family he was advisil by physicians to seek a more favorable location East He at once accepted an election to the Professorship of Homiletics in the Newton Theological Seminary where he remained some three years till elected to the above-named professorship at Brown in June 1882 He was granted leave of absehce from his duties at Brown till the opening of tbe university year the present month In July 1882 he embarked with his family for the Old World and has devoted the fourteen months to hard study attending lectures delivered in celebrated universities of Germany and having access to the far-famed libraries of the East After a residence in Berlin for some months he visited other parts of Germany then spent some time in Italy giving special attention to Rome then to Switzerland thence to Paris and London arriving in Providence in season for the opening of the university year He possesses varied talents of the highest order an intellect clear broad and afternoon while workmen were engaged in trenching for a sewer the earth cayed in and four of the laborers were entirely covered while a fifth was buried up to the shoulders The other workmen labored
