Compton was one of our best citizens. Quiet, unobtrusive in his manner kind and christian liko at home, he had no enemies. His health had been failing for some months passed; and his departure was not unexpected either to himself or to his friends. He died a true believer intho religion of Christ. The community has lost a good man.

Complaint is being made that Indians drink themselves drunk, and while in that condition they are robbed-of their money, here in Coff-.

eyville. We know nothing personally about it; but if the complaint be well, founded, some one or more persons have committed grave offences. It is bad enough to make an Indian drirnk, and it is a great deal worse to 'rob him after he is drunk. The law is very severe in either limits of said city of Coffeyville, unless such person or persons shall first take out and procure a license as an auctioneer in said city as hereinafter prescribed. Sec.

2. -Licenses to Auctioneers may. be granted by the Clerk on presentation to Rim of the city Treasurer's receipt, from the person applying, for the sums following: For license to continue one day 00 For license to continue one $15 00 Sec. 3. In case mere than one Auctioneer is licensed under the provisions of this Ordinance, and they are conducting their business at the-same time, their stands or places of business shall be at least one hundred feet apart, and they shall not trespass upon one another's ground.

And for the purpose oi avoiding dispute about position, the following shall be tho rule Tho first person licensed under this Ordinance, shall name to the city Clerk the particular position on the street which he desires to occupy for his business. He shall be entitled, wh'le engaged in his business, but at no other time, to tho use of fifty feet of open space in any direction from such place and whenever any subsequent license to an Auctioneer is issued, the place he proposes to occupy shall be protected in like manner as in the case of the first license. Sec. 4. Any person or persons violating any of the provisions of this Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.

For violating section the punishment shall be a fine of not less than one dollar, nor more than ten dollars; and for violating section 3, the punishment shall bo a fine of not less than one dollar, and no" more than ten dollars; and' the judgment, in either case, shall be that the defendant stand committed until the fine and costs are paid, as provided by other Ordinances. Sec. 6. This Ordinance shall take effect and be in force from and after its publication in the Coffeyville Journal, a newspaper published in said citr of Coffeyville.
