Film Honors 'Righteous' Who Saved Jews From Nazis Halter tracked down his subjects by interviewing some 200 survivors and working backwards. His research 40 hours of videotape and 1,000 pages of interviews took him from Berlin' to Amsterdam, Rome, Vilnius, Sarajevo, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, Tokyo, France and Africa. "It was time that their stories become part of Holocaust history," he said1 "Instead of focusing on the banality of evil, as Hannah Arendt put it, I thought it was time to docu-, ment the banality of good Only then" will the Holocaust have meaning for 'Halter' said the Holocaust had thus far been reduced to a stage for three types of people: butchers, victims and cowards. Now it was essential for humanity that the righteous be added "Tzedek," which means "justice" in Hebrew, will open the Berlin Film Festival in February and is scheduled to make its U.S.

premiere at the Holocaust Memorial in Washington in the next few months. When possible, Halter filmed both the "savior" and the "saved" Pierre Saragousse, how in his late 40s, breaks do wn in front of the camera as he recalls how, at age 2, he and his sister were wrenched from the clutches of pro-Nazi French collaborationist police by a sympathetic neighbor, a Mrs. Caron. In the film, her daughter, Elise, recalled that her mother protested so vigorously, the police threatened to arrest her, too. But several hours later, a friendly gendarme quietly told Mrs.

Caron she could "come down to the station and take the children." He secretly had destroyed the family's identity papers naming the two children. Danish fisherman Niels Sorensen, then 16, ferried 900 Jews to safety in Sweden. Mary Jayne Gold, an American socialite living on the French Riviera, helped rescue more than 2,000 Jewish artists and intellectuals including Marc Chagall. Zaneiba Hardaga, a Muslim woman in Sarajevo, saved two Jews; her father was executed by the Nazis for hiding another Jewish family. To-, day, the woman she saved has taken Hardaga's own daughter and family into her home in Tel Aviv.

At 27, German industrialist Bert-hold Beitz hired 800 Polish Jews to work in his factory, and staunchly refused to hand them over to the "He came from a pro-Nazi family, but he was so outraged by the bad treatment of Jews, he took immediate action. He is a righteous because, he fought evil with good," Halter said thanks to aid from two Polish Catholic friends of the family "They traveled with us, found us food and shelter," Halter said in an -interview in his Paris study. "I don't think I ever- even knew their names." It has taken more than 50 years for Halter's, "nagging memory" to' translate into action: a filmed monument to the thousands of many of whoir forever will remain anonymous, whose conscience could not let them turn the other way and whose heroism and self-denial never have been recorded. "What comes across in all the interviews is that none of these people thought they were doing anything special," Halter said. "They all described their actions as natural and normal.

Today, they want no credit, no thanks. Most didn't understand why I was bothering to talk to them." By MARILYN AUGUST Associated Press Writer PARIS (AP) Her squinty, blue eyes awash with tears, Irena Sendler recounts how she smuggled Jewish children oat of the Warsaw Ghetto in an ambulance. In the front seat, a dog barked loudly to drown out the cries of her Small passengers. A half-century later, the Polish so-; cial worker who risked her life to save 2,500 Jewish children from the gas chambers still weeps because she didn't do more. Now in her 80s, Sendler is one of the 36 non-Jews highlighted in "Tzedek: The Righteous," a two-hour, 40-minute French documentary by Polish-born writer and filmmaker Marek Halter.

A childhood survivor of the War-, saw Ghetto, Halter began his search for "the righteous" in his hometown, which he fled in 1940 at the age of 5., 11 MP 'Boys On Side' Might Be 'Chick' Movie OPEN DAILY 6PM 566-1199 VIDEOSI VIDEOS! Matthew McConaughey is disarming as the conservative cop Abe Lincoln, who falls in love with Barrymore and serves to illustrate the movie's position of racial and sexual acceptance by practically ignoring the issues that are like a raspberry seed in the wisdom tooth of most conservatives, namely homosexuality, abortion, interracial relationships, unconventional families, etc. For Abe Lincoln, only crimes against the United States Constitution are worth fighting over.

By SARA VOORHEES Scripps Howard News Service The moment you give a movie a title like "Boys on the Side," already you've offended half of the population. Taken from a popular epithet that conjures up images of men on a separate plate like an order of bacon, the title embodies the feminist credo that women should look to themselves and to each other for support and affirmation, instead of waiting for men to give them a sense that they are worthy of themselves. I just guessing here, but I think it's a movie women will love, and men will find unsatisfying. The story follows three entirely different women on a cross-country drive from New York to Arizona, where they settle to form a most unusual family.

Whoopi Goldberg is (intentionally?) a bad sineer in a promiscuous Barrymore, who has to decide whether or not to have an Abortion or to join the growing numbers of young American women who choose to Unwed Mothers, in which case, her policeman boyfriend may or may not want, to marry her. Barrymore -also has to deal with the problem of Murder, which she is guilty of, but perhaps not entirely because she hit the deceased over the head with a baseball bat because he was a Misogynist and probably deserved to die anyway, because he was also heavily involved in Drug Dealing, and couldn't be trusted by the law or his friends. Did they miss anything? I don't mean to make fun of this movie, because I enjoyed every minute of it, and was moved to tears at least a doien times. It's a brave movie, and it challenges the acceptability of prejudices that are the root of-some of the most dangerous social Al Classes He) i Tyler ActMy Certcr 6:00 7:00 p.m. Beginner Double Two Step 3600 was) Enm-Tyto p.m.

On their way through Pennsylvania, they pick up a shamelessly boy-crazy urew Barrymore and the three of them head West. The previews make the movie look like a trivial chick comedy along the lines of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" and it's funny, all right.

The screenplay, by Don Roos White is filled with funny lines which Whoopi has a heyday with. Parker is wonderfully silly as an uptight white girl, and Drew Bar- rymore is perky and empty-headed. She's best in light-hearted roles like this, since she has a face that's a little like Betty Boop, and serious roles are a stretch for her. But if all you're looking for is a funny movie, you'll be very disappointed. The movie deals with every explosive issue of the 90s, beginning with: Homosexuality: Whoopi is a lesbian who has been rejected by Barrymore, but not because she is African-American, and Barrymore is White.

The problem is that Barrymore is not a lesbian, and Whoopi always seems to fall in love with women who are Heterosexual, which everyone else in the movie-is.
