Just as they did in Cheyenne, or or Butte, the country boys eat it up and ask for more. It's hard to believe you could find a three-card monte game in the heart of Africa but it's easy as walking across a country road. In a streetside market in downtown Leopoldville, a wiry little Congolese squatted on the pavement conning the bystanders.

By Eugene Gilbert President, Gilbert Youth Research, Inc. High School students have a constant struggle with themselves "to put away childish things" and find their places in the adult world.

What are the first faint stirrings of maturity that reach the teen-ager? Our current poll of young people's opinion across the nation shows the major outward signs of adulthood are: getting their first driver's license, graduation from high school, and getting their first fulltime job. But aside from statistics, their comments show a surprising grasp of the fact that maturity comes from within, and that the Bill Hickock's time, two of the cards were face cards, one an SPECIAL SALE He switched the cards back and forth and the young Congolese pointed. It was the right one. He laughed in delight and picked up the money. The pitchman looked worried and his forehead crinkled.

He sized the youth up swiftly, and then tossed out the equivalent of about $5. The young Congolese conferred briefly with hfs friend. "Shall I call this guy? It's pretty near a cinch as I see it, but after all it'll mean my bankroll." "Go ahead, you beat him the first time out. He's clumsy." He plunked down his roll. The pitchman moved the cards around with amazing speed.

It's easy. Try your luck." Clumsily for this is part of the pitch he moved the cards around face down, but it was easy to see where the ace had been moved. For instance, Judy Ragland, 17, of Brunswick, Ga. says: "I think feeling adult means taking on his money away." His friend Young Folk Singers Strike It Rich With Record House Gilbert Youth Service Minneapolis In the highly competitive world of record-making, four teen-age folk singers, backed by a teen-operated recording company, have hit the big time. The Yeomen Don Bennett, 16; Keith Critchlow, 17; Bob Finkenaur, 17, and Jack Otter-ness, 17 were the first group auditioned by the Junior Achievers Hi-Top Recording company, which is owned by stock holders in 17 high schools of Greater Minneapolis. The four won the solid approval of the J-A's committee on artists and repertoire, and recorded an album for the company. Now the young artists' record is being circulated by Mercury.

Marketing and promoting the original Hi-Top record was a fullscale teeneffort. The promotion department of Junior Achievers planned the sales program, placed ads, and enlisted the interest of Minneapolis disc jockeys. They worked from an original capitalization of $575, supplied by customary procedure with Junior Achievement business operations across the country. -jr REG. 1.39 0 A UMTED IUI responsibility and realizing that while you must be independent, your actions must take other people into consideration." And Fred Volk, 18, of Wood-mont, Conn, explains: "Being adult can only come when you are able to take on responsibility, react in an adult manner and refrain automatically from acting childishly." "I have been through most of the outward stages mentioned and still do not feel like an adult," says Verna Adams, 17, of South Bend, Ind.

"It is none of those things, but 1 don't know exactly what it is." Adulthood comes "when people begin to rely on you" and you feel needed, says Ned Timmons, time special significance. And their first shave is an event marked by only 14 per cent of boys. "The responsibility of getting a girl back home on time," is a turning point according to Keith Rogers, 17, of Oklahoma City. Sue Wilson, 15; of Baltimore, Md. says she feels grown up "when other adults start treating you like an equal." But the real high spot, says Bob Roebuck, 18, of Mason, Mich, "is that first beer with your Dad." Getting their licenses is the second choice of the boys, with 31 per cent.

Agreeing on the third selection, getting their first full-time job, are 36 per cent of girls and 30 per cent of boys. Paying their first bill represents adulthood to 32 per cent of girls. Having a car of their own is the fourth choice of 27 per cent of boys. Only 16 per cent of girls feel getting their first high heels has 16, of Arlington, Ohio. The girls and boys differ only slightly in their choices of first and second events that make them feel adult.

Forty per cent of girls select getting their own driver's licenses, while 37 per cent of boys think graduation from high school is the leading event. Graduation from high school comes in second with the girls, taking 38 per cent of their vote. Then came night club engagements for the two sisters. hardest life in the world," says Carla.) When Anna Marie went on to star roles on her own, Carla toured with road companies.

Little sister Carla no longer has to look up to Anna Marie. She and Anna Marie decided to break up their night club duos, and go off in separate directions. And Carla hit New York for her Broadway debut. The sisters differ not only in their careers, but in personality too, says Carla. Anna Marie is very sure of herself, and Carla, like the characted Lili she plays on Broadway, is wistful, gentle, and given to moments of deep introspection.

Gilbert Youth Service Teen-age girls in the unhappy position of trailing behind talented older sisters may be comforted by the success story of Carla Alberghetti, musical comedy star in her own right at last. Carla, who's starring in the musical "Carnival," for years played second fiddle to sister Anna Marie through all the painful growing-up years. Their father taught them both to sing, but Anna Marie's warbles pleased him more than Carla's efforts. 22 OLAFSENJ mm BSSL WHEN YOU BUY100 -WHENI 'I lYTiNAL i inttm tit AYTINAL Vitamins Minerals Health maintenance r'v fee '( an formula with booster OLAVITE-M Therapeutic VITAMINS save 5)98 2) I Hi. 1 Kf( i m1.
