Cordova Becky entered the world at the start of the De- pression in No- vember 1929 and left this earth on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at the age of 89. Becky and her twin brother were born to Dionicio and Isabel Jiron in Magdalena, New Mexico.

He was a healthy six-pounder, but she weighed only three pounds and expect- ed to survive. She was fed with an eyedropper and kept in a small cardboard box near a warm oven. With constant feeding and care, she not only gained weight and grew to a nor- mal-sized baby, she also survived whooping cough. Sadly, her twin developed pneumonia and died at about six months of age. Becky grew up with her two sisters and two only an isolated ranch that did not have electricity, in Box Lake, New Mexico.

They were kept busy gathering wood, hauling water, milking cows, feeding chickens, ducks and goats, and help- ing with the housework, cooking and washing. She started her education in a o- ne-room schoolhouse for grades 1 through 8. Family story has it that she cried all the way to and from school and would often fall in the snow, refusing to get up until her sister came to help her. The family moved to Quemado, New Mexico, after old- est sister finished 8th grade, where all the chil- dren graduated from high school. When it was her turn, Becky followed her older brother and sister to Western New Mexico Uni- versity in Silver City, where she graduated in 1953 with a degree in Edu- cation.

She began her teach- ing career at the Girls Wel- fare Home in Albuquerque. Two years later she met Anthony "Sam" Cordova on a blind date and a year lat- er, in 1956, they were mar- ried. Together they had five children, Isabel, Steve, Mary Ann, Suzanne, and Diana. During this busy time of child rear- ing, Becky took a hiatus from teach- ing, but once her youngest began school, Becky renewed her teaching certifi- cate and returned to teaching. She started teaching four-year olds, then taught business and of- fice skills to adults at vari- ous organizations, includ- ing TVI.

She retired from teaching in 1987. But she continued working part-- time selling Home Interi- ors products and demon- strating products at super- markets. She eventually re- tired completely and en- joyed time with Sam, lunch with friends, movies, bin- go, and a bit of low-stakes casino gambling. During her long life, this strong woman outlasted cancer, numerous strokes, and many other health challeng- es. Becky is survived by her husband of 63 years, Anthony Cordova; daugh- ter Isabel; son Steve and his wife Glenda Hogan; daughter Mary Ann; daugh- ter Suzanne and her hus- band Ron Marr; and daugh- ter Diana.

Snyder, M.D. Russ, 86, passed away from com- plications of Alz- Disease. Born in Philadel- phia, PA, his childhood was spent on the cam- pus of the Luther- an Theological Seminary, where his father was a professor. He at- tended Swarthmore Col- lege and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He interned at Bryn Mawr Hospital and did his residency at the University of Colorado.

This was interrupted by an obligatory 2-year stint in the Army, which sent him to Heidelberg, Germany. Upon returning to the States, he completed his residency and, in 1967, ac- cepted a job at the Univer- sity of New Mexico Medi- cal School. He was the first pediatric neurologist in the state and for many years, the only such physician at UNM. During his accom- plished and distinguished career, he served on more than 30 committees or boards at UNM, chairing several. He was an examin- er for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurolo- gy for 36 years.

Russ received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Child Neurology Soci- ety in 2010 for his contribu- tions to research, ethics and medical textbooks and for his construc- tive leadership. Russ was well- known to his stu- dents and collea- gues for the "Sny- derisms" he gave during grand rounds at the hos- pital. Though not always original, these statements were meant to im- part wisdom and advice with a dose of hu- mor and humility, such as "the most certain way to look foolish is to predict the future." He was patient and perceptive and always ready to do the right thing. He showed unfailing fair- ness, insight, kindness, and common sense in both his work and family life. And who could miss his dry sense of humor! He was predeceased by his wife, Alicia, in 2016.

He is sur- vived by his son, Phillip, of Albuquerque, his daughter Christine Cumpston (Rus- ty), of Monte Sereno, CA, and two grandsons. He loved cars, reading, running, travel and his many generations of dogs. A "Snyderism" he used to say to his kids was, let the bastards get you We Dad, and thanks. There will be no services, at request. If de- sired, donations in his name may be made to the Association or the Humane Society.
