gave little Rex his comeuppance Friday when he won a nine-mile of champions" THE the other end of the telephone line belonged to Don gouder assistant executive secretary of the Tennessee Secondary Schools Ath- letic -Association (TSSAA) He was calling from Nashville enroute back to Jrenton just wanted to tell you Jimmy how much we appreciated everything Johnson City did to make the state tournament a success" he said and added: "The Chamber of Commerce breakfast was a wonderful idea and all of the boys appreciated The official TSSAA family was represented here by Sou-der executive secretary A Bridges and second assistant secretary Gary Benmark It was noted at the Chamber breakfast Tuesday that this bad been the first time such an affair had been given by the host city for a state baseball tournament It would appear from cal and from the other favorable comment that Johnson City put its best foot forward in hosting the 1964 tournament- Much credit must go locally to coach John A Broyles of Science Hill the Hilltopper Sports Club and to Ross Edge-' mon who was ip charge of local arrangements for the state tournament And of course the Chamber of Commerce cooperated to the fullest extent including hauling out the sunshine after Monday when the rains washed out the opening games Johnson City was also a good host for the tournament competition-wise Coach defending state champions bad surprised everybody by roaring out of the district and regional playoffs to gain a berth in the four-team state finals And the Hilltoppers embarrassed by anybody in the state tourney games In fact they opened the competition by blanking Memphis Christian Brothers 541 and the West Tennesseans proved their championship caliber later by coming out of the bracket to beat Donelson twice for the title always nice to hear words of commendation for a job well-done The fact that TSSAA officials here only during the actual week of competition sensed the planning and local effort which went into the 1964 state tournament speaks well for the high school association and its officials sure Johnson City would like for the state tournament to return again soon LAMAR NORTH the Belmont Stakes after already taking the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness the Dancer was beaten by Quadrangle Only eight horses have ever won all three so it is difficult to see just how the Dancer could have been such a prime favorite Seems to me that horses should get together and organize against people who tab them favorites and make them look bad in front of their fellow horse when they come through If people had to do the running think twice about loosely using such phrases as What the modern race horse needs is a say like Mr Ed CABSON-NEWMAN College and its basketball coach Dick York for visiting sports writers at the American Press Institute Joe Reichler veteran baseball writer said: believe National League baseball will ever return to New And here in 1964 still debating whether it really hfls or New York Mets and their colorful manager Casey Stengel have generated more interest by losing than they ever could have by winning baseball games Devoted to a team that lost 231 games in its first two seasons and has won only 16 of 50 this season New York fans apparently care less if the Mets win or not Old Ebbets Field never stirred up that much sentiment Now comes a Saturday Evening Post story illustrated by VSHtTf- the National Low celto made hia atatement in 1950 no ona knew the wonderfully losing Mets were on their way to New York with glad tidings of National
