Guaranty Bank makes two major ew ank approved in Pittsburg; agreement made to meme with MOUNT PLEASANT Guaranty Bancshares, parent company of Guaranty Bank, has announced it has received regulatory approval from the Texas Department of Banking and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to open a new full-service banking facility in Pittsburg, Texas. Guaranty Bank Pittsburg will be located on property purchased at 116 S. Greer Boulevard in Pittsburg. Bruce T. Harwell will oversee the new bank.

Harwell has more than 16 years experience in banking, including lending experience for consumer, mercial and mortgage lending. a bachelor's land master's degree from East Texas State University and is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Banking. As of March 31, 1999, Guaranty Bank, chartered in 1913, reported $197 million in loans, an increase of $34 million or 20.8 percent during the past 12 months. "Guaranty Bank continues to have a strong commitment to community banking and remains independent through our ongoing expansion program of diversification of markets and customers base," said Art Scharlach, president of Guaranty Bancshares. "We are proud to open our eighth location and are pleased to have Bruce Harwell associated with Guaranty Bank Pittsburg." Scharlach said Guaranty continues to expand its Northeast Texas customer base as assets increased $37.2 million or 14.9 percent in the past year to $284.5 million and deposits increased $28.6 million or 12 7 percent to $253.7 million for the same period.

"We continue to execute an aggressive growth strategy, including acquisitions and adding new locations in our regional markets," he said. Guaranty Bancshares also announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held First American Financial Corporation for $6.9 million in common stock and cash. First American Financial Corporation, headquartered in Sulphur Springs, is a bank holding company for First American Bank N.A. and First American Mortgage, and operates banks in the communities of Sulphur Springs and Commerce. At the end of March 1999, First American Financial Corporation had $62.9 million in total assets, $39.8 million in loans and $57 million in deposits.

"We are pleased to be in partnership with First American as co-owners dedicated to community banking and focused on personal service and relationships," said Scharlach. "Not only will this transaction allow us to further penetrate our target, the Northeast Texas market, it also will move us a step clos- er to achieving our desired efficiency objectives and have an immediate positive effect on earnings." Rusty Jones, a 25-year veteran of Guaranty Bancshares, serving the past two years as executive vice president of Guaranty Bank, will oversee the additional locations as president. "The merger of these two banks with Guaranty Bank is exciting to my family and me. We are looking forward to meeting new people and being part of the Sulphur Springs community." NS RJX) not enaence Source, kv Crude oil down; soybeans, corn markets higher on bullish weather forecast Associated Press after a nearly four-month inter- nionrlm nmiH i Associated Press Palladium futures plunged for the second straight day on the New York Mercantile Exchange Friday amid reports that Russia, which produces about three- quarters of the world's supply, would begin exporting the metal after a nearly four-month interruption. In other markets Friday, crude oil was down slightly, while soybean and corn futures were higher on bullish weather forecasts. Palladium prices suffered their largest drop in almost three months amid reports that Japan was expecting Russian imports. Japan is the second-largest importer of the product in the world. Also, Switzerland announced it imported Russian palladium last month.

Russia has shipped few new supplies of palladium since December and dwindling inventories have prompted market jitters. Palladium is used in catalysts to provide cleaner-burning cars and in electronic devices like cellular phones. The price of palladium has jumped more than 30 percent since the halt of Russian exports, sending palladium futures to an 11-month high earlier in the week. It's the third straight year of such delays.
